The Power of Praying Parents

As we’re thinking about heading into a new school year, there is always a mix of nerves, fear, and excitement, sometimes in equal (or unequal!) proportions. When I was a teacher (it’s been 7 years now), it was mostly nerves and excitement. But times have changes, even in that short amount of time.
I’ve been feeling in my heart for quite some time now that Satan has ramped up his efforts to steal this next generation. I’ve often said in my own prayer time, ‘Lord, I feel like we are losing a generation.’ It is a time of uncertainty and anxiety with an intensity I haven’t felt in a while.
I know that can feel like that’s the truth (and it might be), but reality is, our prayers make a difference. I’m currently reading John Eldredge’s book Moving Mountains, and I’m inspired to step up my prayer efforts. And as school is approaching, these back-to-school prayers may help guide your prayer efforts at the beginning of the school year.
The Power of Praying God’s Word
I’m generally not a fan of scripted prayers; however, I love to pray the Scriptures, to pray God’s Word back to Him, knowing that my prayers can’t help but be in agreement with His will. And He tells us if we pray according to His will, He will hear us (1 John 5:14). It’s a win, win. It’s a great way to have power, effective prayers.
These prayers are applicable whether your kids are in public school, private school, or homeschool, whether they are in pre-school, kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school or in college, in person or virtual learning.
Elementary students all the way up through college students absolutely need a prayer covering as they are going out into the world, which is basically the enemy’s territory.
As we dive into a new year, where our kids will experience all kinds of new things, meet new friends, and encounter new challenges, let’s pray the peace of God over them and trust God to watch over them. A new academic year and a new environment can be a challenge, but our prayers are probably the single-most important key for peace and success in our kids’ lives.
31 Powerful Prayers for Your Kids, According to God’s Word
I’ve compiled a collection of prayers – 31 different ones you can pray, according to Scripture, a month full of prayers. You can repeat these each month if you’d like. Feel free to put your child’s name in the blank and personalize it. I’ve also created a free printable you can download as well. You can fill out the box at the end of the post to get your free instant download PDF!
It’s a new day, a new year, a time of excitement where our kids will probably encounter all sorts of things for the first time – our prayer covering is one of the best gifts we can give them.

How to Use These Prayer Cards
You can use this as a prayer guide, but I encourage you to not just ‘follow the script.’ Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you in your own prayers – specific prayers for your child and what they are experiencing in their school environment, things they are going through, expanding on what is written on the card. The Holy Spirit will teach you what to pray!
You can start these prayers on the first day of school and pray them all through the year; there’s a full month’s worth. I’d even encourage you to ‘pray ahead’ of your kids and start your intercession for them immediately – you don’t need to wait for the start of school!
You can also print out the cards, cut them up and put them on a binder ring. They are numbered so you can go in order, or you can just pick a random one and let the Holy Spirit guide you.
You can also pray these aloud with and over your child, too! This year, I prayed many of these prayers over my sons at the bus stop. These are great for the car line, bus stop, or even while driving.
You can also give them out to church members and grandparents – the prayer warriors who are often so willing to help and want to do something useful! Praying for our kids is the best thing they can do!
Faith-Filled Prayers for a New School Year
Of course, back-to-school prayers are just the beginning of the prayers we will be praying over our kids for the course of a lifetime, but this is a great time of year to start.
Prayer is one of the most effective and best ways to see that your child has the best year. Not without challenges, but equipped for all the new adventures that will face him this school season. Prayers using God’s Word are powerful prayers, and you can expect to see God honor His Word and show up in personal ways.
So as we face this upcoming school year, with so many new beginnings, we can move in the right direction by getting in alignment with God and His Word. In light of the unpredictable realities they will face this year, our prayers will do so much more than worrying and fretting.
Father, thank you for hearing our prayers and that Your Word does not come back void.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
