A Father and His Baby Boy

imageJust a few minutes until midnight. Til Christmas. All of these days and weeks having been building until this moment.

Christmas is different for everyone…different traditions, different expectations, different realities…

But if we are celebrating Christmas, Christ’s birth, what was it like for God? On that night, what was He thinking? After all, this was the birth of His Son.

Any of our guesses are a long-shot; it’s a little intimidating to try to assume the thoughts of the inscrutable Almighty, but here is what I think He might have been thinking as He witnessed His Son split history in two and enter human existence:

“ ‘Good news’… ‘a cause for great joy.’ And so it begins. The plan to save humanity. To rescue them. To bring them back to Me.

“A Savior You are, My Son. Jesus…. My eternal companion….My Beloved Son…now a baby. A human…slipping into the human experience unaware, but I could hardly let it go unannounced. Seems like such an understated welcome for You, but I had to proclaim Your arrival in some fashion. Not all You deserve, true…but this is fitting to Your role…a humble child, a servant…

“I look down at You, Jesus. In the arms of a young girl, so frail, so full of faith and trust. And You – so small. So precious. So innocent. You Who created man, now one of them, now dependent on them for Your every need.

“Will humanity even believe a plan so unexpected, so extraordinary? Will they even realize the price we are paying, You and Me, My Son, for their ransom? Will they comprehend the cost of their freedom?

“My dear children, made in My image, in such a tangled mess. Yes, they must be set free…but the enormity of the cost they will not even grasp. They will treat it lightly. They will not give You the honor You deserve. They will reject it. Many…but not all…

“And so tonight, it begins. The rescue. And it starts with You, My Son. Your arrival on this planet You Yourself created, You now subject to the effects of the curse that plague it. I wish there was another way…but You and I both know the answer to that.

“Again, I am moved by the beauty of Your submission. Your willingness to sacrifice Yourself for them. To carry out My will for their rescue…at Your own expense. At Our expense. So beautiful and selfless You are…

“Every moment of every day, Heaven will feel Your absence, My Son. You and I one, but apart. Separated. You are just barely gone and already I long for Your return. But You will not return alone…You bring with You the spoils – our Beloved creation.

“Oh, Jesus …the angels proclaim Your glory today, but in the joy of Your arrival, I see farther ahead…I see what awaits You.

“Oh My Son, it pains my heart to even think about it. Yes, even on this glorious night, My thoughts see Your future. Tonight the angels rejoice at Your birth…but You are born for one reason….. to die. To give Your life as a sacrifice. To be the ransom. It is almost incomprehensible as I look at You…My beautiful Son, a baby boy…born only to become a sacrifice.

“Oh My Son, how I wish there was another way…

“The humans always want to know about their future, My plans for their lives…My heart breaks as I see Your future, My Son, as I see what awaits You…yet, this is what must be done to bring them back to Me. And one day, when we are all together in My kingdom, we will nod in agreement knowing that it was worth it…they are worth it.

“Nevertheless, for tonight, My sweet Jesus, You are a baby boy.

Sleep in peace, My sweet, beautiful baby boy.”
