A Little DIY to Welcome the Seasons
I was a New Yorker (Long Islander, to be exact) for almost all of my 46 years of life (minus a few at college in Virginia), and one of the things I hated the most about New York was the winter. We relocated to East Tennessee about a year and a half ago, and as you might guess, one of my favorite things about living here is the early spring.
The end of winter can be a little crazy here with one day ending in the 60s and it’s in the 20s by the morning, but for a short winter? Yes, ma’am, I’ll take it. This February, the daffodils were breaking through, and even though these early bloomers were also dusted with snow a few days later, I’m all for the weather here.
After a bleak winter, those bursts of colors are just what we need. Today’s DIY project is meant to bring some of that spring cheer right inside your home. This also goes the same for fall…. summer goes a little longer here- through October- but this is just the transitional piece you need – easily adaptable to bring some fun farmhouse-boho decor to your home.
This floral wall hanging is a gorgeous, simple, and cheap project you can do about 60 minutes or so. Below, I’ll show you two version that I’ve done. The directions here are for the spring wall hanging – and then there’s a simplified version of the fall wall hanging. Of course – use stems for any season to change it up!
Here’s spring…
Here’s fall…
A Little Farmhouse, A Little Boho
If you look at my home, I’m definitely more on the rustic farmhouse spectrum. But to be honest, I sometimes like a few modern or industrial farmhouse pieces thrown in – and yes, even a few boho pieces, too. That’s where this DIY floral wall hanging comes in.
I was scrolling through Pinterest and I came across a similar piece on Etsy, but it was pretty price, although very lovely. I know right away that I could make something similar – and you know what – so can you.
This is a spring floral wall hanging, which can bring both a boho and farmhouse vibe to your home.
Easy & Cheap DIY Floral Wall Hanging (A Little Boho, A Little Farmhouse)
Supply List
The best part about this project (besides how pretty it looks) is how cheap it is to recreate. I got all of my materials at Walmart, and it totaled about $10 or so total to make. That about 10% or less of the ones you might have to buy. Complete score.
Here’s the list of items I purchased:
3-4 faux eucalyptus stems (or greens of your choice)
1-2 faux rosebud stems (or flower of your choice)
Thick yarn (81-yard package) (see other adaptations below)
5-gallon paint stirrer stick (comes in package of 3)
Extra greens (baby’s breath, heather, olive, etc.)
Floral wire
Tools
There are also a few tools you might need to purchase if you don’t have them on hand. But if you do any kind of DIY, I bet you already have them.
Wire or floral cutter (certain plyers can work also)
Glue gun and glue sticks
Scissors
Pro Tips
I’ve listed out the step by step instructions below, so I won’t repeat them all right here, but let me give you a few pro-tips that might help as you put together this project.
The steps are simple, but here are a few things:
The length of the strands is up to you, but you want it to hang down at least the length of the stick. So, when you’re cutting your yarn, you need to double the length as you’ll be looping it around. This isn’t an exact measurement for each strand. You’ll be varying it for a staggered look – You want it to look intentionally uneven.
Once you’ve secured the yarn to the stick, if you feel like your yarn strands need more length or fullness, cut some extra pieces and glue them on the back to fill in.
This is a very forgiving project. There’s no requirement for perfection.
Options to Customize and Adapt
Not only can you customize the flowers and greens you use, but you can also customize it more for the style of your home.
Here a few other options:
*Use real macramé instead of yarn for a more authentic boho look (You can buy dream catchers or plant holders and cut them up for more details strands)
*Use clothesline rope instead of yarn
*Use strands from a mop head instead of yarn (you can get one for $1 at Dollar Tree)
*Use strips of fabric instead of yarn for a more rag, farmhouse look. Old sheets and dropcloths work great, too! (I first saw this idea with fabric from Salvaged Living.
*When looping the yarn or cord, loop several strands together for a more clustered look.
*Choose flowers or greens in colors and styles that blend with the existing décor of your home.
*Drape some greens or flowers down one side.
*Hang some flowers down vertically to overlay on top of the yarn strands.
*Try braiding a few of the yarn strands for more texture as well!
Modifications For the Fall Floral Wall Hanging
In the fall floral wall hanging above, I used some flowers and stems from Hobby Lobby. I wanted a soft fall look, so I used more neutral colors, which is a nice transition from spring/summer to fall.
For the pieces that hang down, I just used some spare fabric I had – some I had purchased, some sheets, old pillow cases. For the record, king size pillow cases work the best. If you cut the sides of the pillow case so you have one long piece of fabric and not a folded piece, you’ll have just the right length – maybe even a little longer.
I just made small cuts about an inch or so wide, then I tore it by hand, so it had a more tattered look.
So, you really can create this wall hanging to be totally unique and totally in line with what your style is. Have fun! Experiment! What you try is hardly ever permanent so give a few different looks a go.
OK, so here’s the succinct version of the instructions with some process shots to help you visualize the steps!
Spring DIY Home Decor
Materials
- 3-4 faux eucalyptus stems (or greens of your choice)
- 1-2 faux rosebud stems (or flower of your choice)
- Thick yarn (81-yard package)
- 5-gallon paint stirrer stick (comes in package of 3)
- Extra greens (baby’s breath, heather, olive, etc.)
- Floral wire (optional)
Tools
- Wire or floral cutter
- Glue gun and glue sticks
- Scissors
Instructions
1| Cut strips of yarn to tie around wood paint stirrer.
2| Take the yarn strand and fold it length-wise, with the top loop behind the paint stick. Take the 2 loose ends and pull through the loop so it makes a simple knot at the bottom of the paint stick.
Continue to cut yarn strips and make knots around the paint stick, covering the length.
3| Once you reach the end, glue the end strands of yarn to the paint stick to secure it.
4| To hang it, you can cut a piece of yarn and glue it to the back of your paint stick. If it feels weak, you can double the yarn. Or, you can take a long piece of yarn and tie the ends together. Loop it several times on one side of the stick, then loop it around the other, and pull up in the middle to hang.
5| Lay out your eucalyptus stems across the paint stick. You can use wire cutters to split them for more of a custom look, or you can lay them out intact if it suits you.
6| Attach the stems to the paint stick by wrapping a piece of floral wire around the stem and paint stick and then twisting it around the back. Use several pieces of wire as needed. You can also glue gun as well.
7| Pull off rosebuds from stems and remove pointed bottoms with a floral cutter so roses will lay flat on the paint stick. Glue rosebuds in the center of the paint stick, spreading out toward the ends, as desired.
8| Trim extra pieces of faux greens or flowers with floral cutter and intermix them with the eucalyptus greens. You can stick them into the yarn loops to attach them or you can use your glue gun as well.
Hang in your favorite place and enjoy!

What a beautiful wall hanging! I can only imagine how much something as pretty as that would cost in the likes of Urban Outfitters or Anthropologie. I would love to try and make my own for my bedroom wall xo
