Not Too Early for Fall Decorating
My twin 5-year-old sons started kindergarten yesterday. In July. In the sweltering humidity of summer. We are somewhat new to Tennessee, and that’s how they roll around here for school. So, my logic says that if it’s not too early to go to school, when it’s still 90 degrees out, then it’s not too early to start planning my fall decorating, getting things ready to launch on September 1.
Fall is the harbinger for the cozy months that are just ahead, leading up to Christmas and then into the depths of winter just beyond – a total shift in temperature and atmosphere both inside and outside the house. While it seems a little counterintuitive to be doing fall decor planning in the summer (the stores obviously don’t think so), there’s something to be said for being a little ahead of the game.
A Fall Decorating Plan: Gathering the Ideas
This morning, I pulled all my fall decor from the basement closet to see what I had. Basically, when I’m decorating for fall, I follow the steps I outline here: “Simple Ways to Decorate for Fall on a Tight Budget“ as well as some of these more general tips here: “How to Decorate Your House on a Tight Budget.“
In a nutshell, the concept is to find an idea for the look you’re going for so it doesn’t look like Hobby Lobby just exploded all over your house. I love to look at what other people have done and take my cues and get inspiration from there. Here are some of my favorite farmhouse fall decorating ideas – 30 vignettes for mantels, shelves, console tables, entryways, and kitchen/dining areas. Usually, as I’m looking through pictures, I’ll sort of know when I’ve landed on a look I love for that year.
Then, I’ll go through my decorations (and even my house) and decide what I can use, what I need to modify or upcycle, and what pieces I’ll need to buy. That last bit is where this post comes in.
Homemade, Unique Fall Decor for a Bargain
Today, I’m sharing farmhouse fall decor for the home from Etsy for those pieces you still need to add into your fall decorating scheme. Each one of these handcrafted pieces is perfect if you are into farmhouse decor, and none of them cost more than $20, give or take a dollar.
I especially love Etsy because it’s just creatives {like me} trying to build a business by doing a craft they are passionate about. I LOVE to support those people more than just buying decor from big businesses and box stores. They appreciate that kind of business so much.
I also love Etsy because these items are all hand-crafted. I love crafts, DIY, and making homemade things – but sometimes…you know, not enough patience, not enough time …Etsy is the next best thing. There’s something so original and unique when you buy a homemade, original piece instead of just buying something mass-produced by a machine.
So if you’re in the market for farmhouse decor but DIY isn’t in your wheelhouse at the moment, give these Etsy products a look. I think you’ll love them!
And if you have the time and want to throw a few DIYs in the mix, here are 25 gorgeous farmhouse fall DIY projects that would look amazing blended with any of the ones below.

I know fall decorating – or really any kind of decorating, seasonal or not – can feel overwhelming at first. Just take a little at a time.
I usually set up all my stuff the way I think I want it and let it sit for a day or two. I’m always tweaking and moving things around, and usually, I’ll land on something I really love.
And if not, that’s fine! It’s still festive, and the sun doesn’t rise or set on how perfectly my home is decorated.
Always remember that your house doesn’t have to look exactly like the pictures or anyone else’s. If YOU love it, that’s all that counts. You don’t need to be a slave to Pinterest or Instagram ideals.
They’re there for inspiration, but not as a standard to live up to.
And, you can always grab some pieces on clearance and give it another go next year. I do that ALL the time. Don’t let decor steal your joy for the season! Fall coziness goes way beyond decor.
If you try any of these ideas or use these pieces, I’d love to see what you come up with! Tag me on Instagram @100affections or leave a comment on Pinterest! I’d love to cheer you on!
