The Downton Abbey Obsession
So, there’s a reason I haven’t been blogging.
I can sum it up in two words (and it’s not as noble as you think):
Downton Abbey.
I know, I’m a little late to the party – and it’s kind of a lame reason, but it’s the truth all the same.
I somehow got wrangled into the Downton Abbey obsession a few weeks ago at work. Some of my teacher-friends were talking about it in the faculty lounge, and when I asked, they said, ‘What??? You haven’t seen it??? Oh, Landry – you HAVE to see it.’
This from my English Dept. girls, I couldn’t take it lightly. Conveniently enough, one of them has the first 3 seasons on DVD – which she immediately lent me.
The opportunity for season 1 came about 3 weeks ago when my husband was gone for a whole week of job-training. I got through the entire season in 2 nights.
Last week while I was on Spring Break, I got through season 2 (in between grading thesis papers, of course. That is the other reason I haven’t been blogging: can’t write when I have grading hanging over my head. Kinda like not being able to relax when my house is a mess. First things first).
Fortuitously enough, my husband is away again this week for job training, so, I started season 3 last night.
[I mention the husband-being-away-detail because, for sure, during play-off hockey, Downton has little chance of making it to prime-time in our house.]
The girls at work keep telling me, ‘Katie, just WAIT.’
Before I started watching, all I kept over-hearing about the show was, ‘It’s awful. Everyone dies.’ Really? That is supposed to entice me?
Well, maybe not everyone, but yes, I discovered there were a few deaths in season 2, although, I have to say, William’s and Lavinia’s deaths were incidental to me. And honestly? Lavinia had to go. She was in the way (bless her sweet heart). And I managed to get out of the girls that there are 2 more deaths in season 3.
They keep telling me, ‘Have a box of tissues nearby.’ Great. Really, though, the only deaths that could maybe bring me to tears might be Matthew/Mary or Anna/Bates. I’m not sure if losing anyone else would do it for me.
Well, I’ll let you know in a day or two when I re-emerge.
Time is of the essence. Gotta have this baby wrapped up before the husband comes home on Friday.

OH, Yay!!!! My husband and I LOVE Downton! 😀
We bought seasons 1 & 2 when 3 was already on tv, and “caught up”…then we went ahead and got season 3 a number of months later. Finally caught up and then we anxiously awaited season 4. Bought it on amazon the week it was released! 😉

Thanks, Valerie!!! Season 3 was brutal!!! I heard Season 4 is easier on the emotions. And thankfully so!!! I will hopefully catch up…but I heard Season 5 isn’t due til January! That is a long time to wait!!!
LOL I love Downton Abbey…. I have the last episode recorded for season 4 and saving it for Friday night!! Enjoy 🙂
I finally finished Season 3 and I’m trying to track down 4! I heard the 4 is much easier on the emotions than 3! Not sure if I could handle another one like that!

Yeah, my husband doesn’t even want to get into it….maybe if he was ‘forced’ but probably not voluntarily! I’m hoping to get Season 4 from the library. I heard Season 5 isn’t due out until January!!!

I haven’t watched it either, but really want to! I’ve been thinking of getting it on Netflix and binge watching it as soon as work slows down a bit.
It is definitely worth the time! I just finished Season 3…trying to track down Season 4! Let me know if you do!
Welcome to the Downton club! I literally just got home from watching some of Season 4 with my sister. She got me hooked on it after season 2. Which says a lot, because I watch very little TV or movies or anything of that sort. I love the characters, especially the Dame Maggie Smith, who, as the Dowager, is simply superb.
I was wondering why you weren’t blogging! I completed Season 3 and then decided not to watch. I do miss it, though.

Thanks! lol I am having a hard time finding Season 4. None of my friends have it; I will try the library, but I have a feeling there is a waiting list. Dowager is amazing. Her character has developed so much over the seasons I’ve seen. Love, love, love her!
