When Exercise for Mom is a Challenge
When my twin boys were babies, even though I was bone tired, I was always able to exercise. Walking with my boys truly saved my sanity. We went on walks all. the. time.
I needed time to clear my brain. They needed to be contained. Anyplace I could get my stroller – the mall, the park, the neighborhood… I would be there walking.
When they were toddlers, I seriously got all of my 10,000 steps in just by chasing them around the house. Our little house.
Fast forward to my boys being 4 years old and out of the stroller. Exercise is a ton harder to come by these days. I love walking but they aren’t always into it (and can’t keep up). They don’t require as much chasing (thank God) as they’re pretty good at playing independently – but that’s a lot less activity for me.
And both logistically and financially, a gym membership isn’t really an option right now.
I’ve been struggling to find a solution. You, too, maybe?
Solution: Exercise Together
I’ve finally come to the realization that I can’t wait for them to want to come on walks with me (although, they’ve mastered pedaling, so a walk+Big-Wheels-ride could be in our near future).
I’ve started to research what I could find online that could let me exercise in the house easily and get them in on the fun – 1. for their own exercise and 2. so they don’t distract me while I exercise!
Oh, and that’s free, too, by the way.
After searching, I came across some great workouts for both moms and kids online or on Youtube. No special memberships, no special apps. Just right there on YouTube or the Internet.
I found that once you go to the link, there are usually other videos by the same person or group you can do as well, if you want more options.

*Jump rope
*Kick around a soccer ball
*Have a game of catch (football, baseball)
*Play frisbee
*Play kickball
*Play basketball
*Rollerblade or roller skate

A Workout is a Great Way for Mom and Kids to Bond
Sometimes it’s hard to find activities where the kids love it and mom doesn’t want to gouge her eyes out. Exercise is one of those things that is not only good for you but fun for both. And if your kid is especially busy and active, this is a great way to find common ground and a way to bond, especially with boys!
I often think that one of the best gifts I can give my sons is a healthy mom who will live a long life and enjoy it with them. Exercise is one way I can do that; exercising and working out together makes the bond between us stronger.
You’ve got this! I’d love to hear of other ways you exercise with your kids around – or with your kids!
