This chick craft is super-easy and super-adorable! Using just construction paper and googly eyes, it’s something you can whip together with materials you probably have at home! The baby chick comes out of an egg, grass – or both! It’s perfect for a spring or Easter craft for the kiddos, especially preschoolers! Keep reading for the details!

All of the Crafts

Since we are all safer at home these days, it’s been game on for crafts around here. Since Easter is coming, it’s given us a focus, at least, but let me tell you, I’m not the preschool Pinteresty-mom.  I love a good DIY or recipe, but little-kid-crafts aren’t typically my game.

However, as we all are adjusting to some new normals for a while, well, we’ve had to get creative. I’ve done a few ‘Lazy Mom’ crafts – like having them put fish stickers on a paper plate, use a blue magic marker, and now it’s an ‘ocean craft.

Or cut out a piece of construction paper in the shape of an egg, give them some pom poms, buttons, and sticks, and now it’s an Easter egg craft.

Or, just a cardboard box with the same decorations and now it’s a ‘treasure box’ craft.

You do what you gotta do to keep the littles entertained. And they were, so win for everyone.

Enter the Easter Crafts for Kids

But since Easter is approaching, I had the boys look through this Easter Crafts for Kids post and pick out a few.

We also looking through this post of Easter Treats to pick out a few to make together (to me, that’s kind of a craft?!?)

We recently did these bunnies, which they really liked (and I did, too), from Crafty Morning.

My son asked me if we were going to make chicksie, too.

Hmmm. I was kinda impressed at his initiative on that – and his idea.

So, based on the bunny in the grass craft, we made this easy construction paper baby chick craft.

Baby Chick in an Egg Easy Easter (or Spring) Craft

This craft was really easy, and we did it in a few minutes. As I was cutting out the materials, my son said,

“I think the chick should come out of an egg, since he just hatched!”

I was planning on putting the chick in the grass, just like the bunny, but again, I was really impressed at his thinking there! So, I created the baby chick craft with an eggshell option.

Supplies:

1/2 sheet construction paper for background (pink, blue, etc.)

1/2 sheet YELLOW construction paper

1/2 sheet GREEN construction paper (if you want to do grass)

1/2 sheet WHITE construction paper (if you want to an egg)

1/2 sheet (or small scrap) of ORANGE construction paper

2 googly eyes (if you don’t have googly eyes, you can use construction paper or just draw them on!)

Glue (glue stick, Elmer’s glue. You can even use tape if you want for everything but the googly eyes).

• You can also make this bigger and display on a full sheet of construction paper. Just use full sheets instead of 1/2 sheet.

Preparing the Cutouts:

For the baby chick, cut out an oval from the yellow paper, taking up most of it. Save the scraps to do the wings. To create the wing, cut 2 wing shapes that are round on the bottom and have 3 humps on the other side (see picture below).

For grass, cut the 1/2 sheet of green in half, so you’re using a 1/4 sheet. Round the sides or you can keep the edges square so they line up with the background paper. Your choice!

From the top, cut out little triangles of different lengths and sizes to make the grass. You can make it more like a fringe, if you like!

For an egg, cut the 1/2 sheet of white, so you’re using a 1/4 sheet. Round the sides to make it look like a 1/2 egg shape. Make zig-zag cuts across the top (3 or 4) to look like a cracked egg.

Cut a small triangle from the orange paper from the beak.

Assembling the Chick:

Layout pieces of baby chick and egg/grass before gluing to make sure everything looks right.

Place down yellow oval, with wings tucked underneath.

 

Put grass on top.

You can also use the white eggshell instead of the grass.

You also can use the eggshell and put the grass on top.

Trim any pieces of the baby chick that are sticking out beyond the eggshell or the grass.

Place eyes and beak on top in a position that you love!

Using a glue stick, paste down the yellow oval on the background sheet. Quickly put glue on the wings and tuck them under the sides of the yellow oval, with the wings sticking out.

Place grass over the chick and glue.  Or put the egg down and glue. Or both (eggshell first).

Then put some glue on the face of the chick where you want the eyes to be (easier to glue paper if you’re using a glue stick. If it’s Elmer’s glue, you can put glue on the back of the googly eyes.)
