The Cozy and Charming Appeal of the Cottagecore Aesthetic at Easter
I love decorating my home for holidays, and Easter is no exception.
I’ve always struggled with trying to name the style of my home… it’s somewhat eclectic, kind of modern farmhouse but with some rustic elements.
I don’t think I’d call it full-on cottage core, but I do love the natural materials, soft colors, and vintage-inspired details of that style. Cottagecore has a timeless feel absolutely I’m drawn to (though I have to admit, if every detail in my house was cottagecore, to me, it would feel a little inauthentic).
But I felt like Easter is the perfect time to incorporate this style. So this year, I created some Easter vignettes throughout my home that capture that cozy, rustic charm.
Today I want to share how I incorporated cottagecore themed Easter vignettes throughout my home.
But First, What Exactly is Cottagecore?
While cottagecore is somewhat a new and trending term, it showcases that romantic, rural and pastoral life we’ve see in art and literature for centuries. It’s rooted in old-fashioned traditions, quality craftsmanship, and a connection to nature.
It’s sunlight, picnics, flowers, and everything quaint and nostalgic. (You can read more about the cottagecore aesthetic here!)
Key Elements of the Cottagecore Aesthetic
The Cottagecore aesthetic is all about creating a cozy, rustic, and nostalgic atmosphere.
When decorating, here are some things to consider including:
Natural Materials
Wood, stone, and other natural materials: exposed wooden beams, stone fireplaces, and woven baskets. Don’t forget about florals as well!
Fresh flowers, wildflowers, dried flowers… all of them are absolute staples in a cottagecore home!
Floral Patterns
These can appear on curtains, wallpaper, or furniture. If you don’t want that kind of commitment, you can incorporate in wall art, tapestries, or other pieces of decor.
Decoupage is a great way to add in floral look without it being too obtrusive!
Soft Textures
Warm crocheted or knit blankets, fluffy sheepskin rugs, soft cotton textures create a cozy space. Think ‘inviting and comfortable’ when picking textiles!
Vintage Accents
Antique furniture, vintage books and decor, and old-fashioned kitchenware all bring about a cottagecore aesthetic.
If you don’t want completely antique-filled home, think about mixing in old vintage with new. Modern rustic and antique cottagecore blend seamlessly!
The idea of a cottagecore aesthetic is to have a warm, cozy, inviting space that feels like a safe haven from the penetrating forces of the outside world.
Styling Tips for Easter Cottagecore Vignettes
When thinking about Easter decorating, below are a few ways you can incorporate the cottagecore aesthetic into Easter vignettes.
Layering and Composition
To create a visually interesting Easter vignette, think about layering different elements and play with composition.
You don’t need to have just Easter decor in these vignettes; a few Easter accents mixed with spring decor work beautifully.
For this vignette, I used some moss and faux eggs in DIY apothecary jars, topped with bird’s nests, a bird, a vintage book, and more eggs. The bunny works for both Easter and spring!
For example, the decor for this Easter table is mostly spring (fresh flowers, pastel colors, spring tableware), but I layered in some Easter accents, such as eggs, bunnies, and Easter paper plates and napkins.
Using Nature
One of my favorite ways to create a cottagecore vibe is to use items from nature, such moss, twigs, flowers, and even animal (figurines, lol) such as birds, bunnies, and chicks.
Sometimes it’s a stretch to use all ‘real’ nature, straight from the outdoors. It’s totally OK to mix in ‘faux’ nature with real!
In my home, I used a mix for fresh flowers as well as faux moss, bird’s nests, bunnies, and eggs to bring nature indoors.
In the vignette below, I created a display in a DIY tray with a wire cloque. Inside is a bunny, moss, faux eggs, greens, and adorable gingham carrots.
This one sits below my mantel.
Speaking of mantels, I have lots of faux florals both in the vases and as my garland. I added in a bunny on top to give it more of an Easter feel.
Even a simple embroidered bunny pillow with a vintage feel is a nod to nature! This one sits right out on my porch!
Color Palettes
When it comes to Easter decor, pastel colors are a classic choice that never goes out of style.
I also like to incorporate soft pastel colors, like blush pink, pale blue, and butter yellow… to me, it’s the perfect spring palette, which makes it beautiful for Easter, creating a whimsical and dreamy atmosphere.
You can see on my Easter table that the dominant colors are soft pastels that are so easy on the eyes.
However, you can also mix in some bolder colors like deep purples or bright oranges to add a pop of color and contrast.
On my porch, I used beautiful hydrangeas in a rich pink-purple color. Eventually they will go in my backyard, but I thought the pop of color was a beautiful addition to an Easter porch.
Cottagecore Easter Decor Accents
A few well-placed Easter decor accents can really highlight the celebration.
Some pastel eggs in a woven or ceramic basket or a clay bunny tie in the country charm of a cottagecore lifestyle while being seasonally appropriate!
Here’s another way to style a vintage wire basket with a more whimsical look for a more child-like appeal! Add a free printable Easter tag for a bit of nostalgic charm!
Even a lovely vintage glass candy dish with pastel M&Ms works wonderfully for a sweet little Easter accent!
If you have vintage Easter decor to mix in, even better!
DIY Easter Decor Projects
Decoupage
Using Mod Podge and pretty floral-patterned napkins, tissue paper, or fabric is a gorgeous way to add a cottagecore touch for Easter. Simply cut the tissue paper or fabric into small pieces and glue them onto the eggs with Mod Podge.
You can also Mod Podge wooden Easter eggs or bunnies! (This one isn’t a DIY but it is one you can so easily create yourself!)
It’s a perfect combination of cottagecore and shabby chic!
Resurrection Garden
I just love Resurrection gardens. They look amazingly bucolic in an indoor planter while bolding celebrating the true meaning of Easter!
This year, I did a DIY Resurrection Garden in my outdoor planter, and I think it’s a perfect rustic, cottagecore touch to my front porch.
Rustic Flower Displays
A rustic centerpiece can add a charming touch to your Easter decor vignette. You can create a simple centerpiece by filling a watering can or a wooden crate with fresh flowers, such as daisies or tulips.
Even wildflowers picked from your own yard or garden look absolutely stunning.
I used a watering can on my table, which is a wonderful choice if you don’t want an intrusive centerpiece that blocks the view of your guests. The tray is also a simple DIY!
You can also create a simple egg-filled vase, with spring florals in them! Just place a toilet paper or paper towel roll inside, fill the outside of the roll with eggs, and place the floral on the inside!
Hanging Easter Canvas
This is such a simple Easter DIY that I made with Easter dish towels! It’s a handmade, mini-version of a canvas tapestry that adds some lovely Easter charm!
Hung along with a straw hat and woven tote bag of faux florals, it’s a truly simple but endearing Easter vignette.
