Creating Space for Easter Decorating

My approach to Easter decorating is a lot like decorating for Valentine’s Day – it’s such a short season that a few seasonal vignettes are really enough.

With Christmas or spring or fall, the decorations for those seasons take over just every square inch of real estate in my house.

It would be a lot of work to create a whole now decorating display for Easter and Valentine’s Day, since they come quickly and are gone just as quick!

For both of those holidays, I usually allow spring decor to guide my decorations for Easter and Valentine’s Day, mixing the holiday decor into the rest of the spring decor in small vignettes.

I will mostly focus on a few nooks in the living room, and of course (and the reason you’re here), the fireplace mantel.

Tips for Creating a Beautiful Easter Mantel

I’m not a fan of lots of rules when it comes to decorating. Of course, some stylistic basics definitely help create a more polished space.

But I think it’s more about what you like, how it makes you feel, and how it functions for your home and family.

Decorating is an amazing creative outlet, and the best part is that it allows you to express your own creativity and personal style.

That being said, here are a few tips that may help:

1| Use spring decorations as your background.

Spring and Easter decor have a lot in common! Both generally incorporate well-loved icons like spring flowers, birds’ nests and eggs, mossy fillers – even bunnies.

There’s a lot of overlap when it comes to Easter and spring decorating.

To distinguish your Easter decor from your spring decor, throw in just a few specific Easter decorations: colorful Easter eggs, an Easter sign, bunnies and carrots (which lean more toward Easter bunny than spring bunny).

And you simply can remove the Easter accents and keep the rest of the decor up for a simple spring mantel. (You can see my favorite spring mantel decor ideas here!)

2| Follow the basics of mantel decorating for your Easter mantel.

What are those basics, you ask?

I have an entire post dedicated to styling mantels, but succinctly, you want to have a statement piece in the center, add height on the two ends, and layer decor in between.

Your goal is balance, not necessarily symmetry. You want to make sure the weight of the decor (its presence, not pounds) is about equal on both sides. You don’t need to have the exact same pieces on either side.

For example, you might realize you need to add more height on side to balance out the other. In that case, you can stack books or use a riser and place your decor on top. Maybe you can add a tall candle or floral arrangement to balance out the height.

You might see that you have some empty space on one side compared to the other. In that case, you could try a small sign or candle or terra cotta pot to fill in some of that space.

The rule of 3s is a good one to follow – keep decorative clusters or vignettes in groups of 3.

Balancing your use of color is another important rule. For instance – don’t put all of your white decor in one area and all the colored decor in another. Be sure to spread it out.

I spend a lot of time tweaking and adjusting my mantel to achieve the right balance. Often, it’s trial and error and just a little bit of intuition.

It gets easier the more you do it, and your eye also develops over time! It just takes practice!

3| Reuse and repurpose to stay on budget.

I am always looking for creative ways to decorate on a budget, and Easter is no exception.

There is no need to buy a whole lot of Easter-specific decor and new things.

You can use a lot of evergreen decor as well – old books for stacking, vases or a white pitcher to hold flowers, chunky wood candle holders, baskets… all of those items can be used for every season!

I also like to throw in some easy Easter crafts as well as use free printables for some of my signs (I even use Easter tags in my decor!)

Even fresh flowers can become gorgeous and colorful decorations.

Sure, you can run to Hobby Lobby for a few decor items or filler pieces, but don’t feel like you need to drop a lot of cash! Thrift store finds are also an amazing way to add in unique decor in a classic way.

See what you have that you can incorporate for each new season!
