Advent Calendars: A Meaningful Family Tradition

My guess is that you have kids (or maybe you teach kids) – and that’s why you’re here. So you don’t need to me to tell you that one of the most fun activities for kids around Christmas time is the Countdown to Christmas.

My boys, who are 6 now, have been doing some kind of countdown since they were toddlers. And as they get older, it has only gotten better and hopefully more significant as a family tradition. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with counting down by eating chocolate – I mean, what kid doesn’t like that?

But hopefully, as they grow, the approach to Advent grows more meaningful with them.

Advent literally means, “coming” – and so this is a super-fun time to build anticipation. 

 

A Variety of Advent Calendar Activities for Kids and Families

The printables I’m sharing work with any kind of Advent calendar—one you already have or a DIY version (which can also be a fun family activity).

You can buy or make a calendar with boxes, buckets, or sacks, or simply print the calendar and cards to use as-is. 

This free printable countdown PDF includes several activity options to fit your family’s priorities. Here’s what you’ll get:

Advent Bible Readings

For many (myself included), it’s important to keep the focus on Christ. A simple way to do this is to go through advent daily readings. As adults, we can probably do a devotional. Some older kids may be fine with that, too.

But for younger kids, a few advent Bible verses is all you need. This part of the advent calendar has a short portion of Scripture you can read every day.

If that’s only advent activity you want to do, that’s totally fine.

Acts of Kindness

As our kids get older, to teach them the true meaning of Christmas, it’s important to get them to think of others and not be only focused on their Christmas list.

Acts of Kindness is a great way to do this. (I did an Acts of Kindness Countdown for Valentine’s Day when my boys were 4 years old, so it can work for even the younger ones!).

With this calendar, there’s an activity to do every day that focuses on serving & showing kindness to others.

 

Family Advent Activities for Kids

Many families like to spend the month of December having quality time with each other, enjoying some family Christmas activities.

All of the activities in this portion of the calendar are family-oriented and kid-friendly, with the goal of bonding with siblings and with parents.

 

Mix and Match

We know Christmas season can be so busy, right? Maybe the thought of doing all this stresses you out.

Do not feel obligated to do any of it.

You can mix and match and pick just the right type and number of activities for your family. You can mix up all three, choose the ones you like, or even create your own using the blank cards.

Just do whatever will fit best with your lifestyle, schedule, and holiday family goal.

Breakdown of Advent Calendar Printables and How to Use Them

Single Page Calendar Print-Outs

 

If you want to keep like simple without being crafty, you can just print off the single page calendar and go from there. There are 4 options:

• A full version with all 3 activity types per day (Bible reading, Act of Kindness, Family Activity)—choose one each day or mix and match.

• A calendar with only daily Bible readings.

• A calendar with only Acts of Kindness.

• A calendar with only Family Activities (like Christmas movies, ice skating, or baking cookies).

 

The calendar is set up where you can use it every year (you don’t need an updated version!). And, you can cut up the numbered squares if you want, and use them that way, also!

 

Printable Numbered Cover Tags

If you want to DIY your own advent calendar, you can print out the numbered tags, on cardstock or on paper. You can hang them on something as simple as clothes pins on a string. I’ve used a bulletin board with string attached & also made my own from pallet wood! 

 

 

I also included tags with just images on them (no numbers) in case you already have an advent calendars with numbers.

 

Side note – There are two #24 cards – one with Santa, one with a manger scene. As you build toward Christmas Eve, choose the one that your family emphasizes.

Activity Tags

Each category (Bible Readings, Acts of Kindness, Family Activities) has its own activity cards.

There’s a set for Bible Reading, with red letters. 

There’s another set for Acts of Kindness in green letters.

Finally, the last set is Family Activities in brown letters. This allows you a little more flexibility than using the printed calendars, as you can easily pick from each calendar and incorporate them into your own set up.

***Note: I updated the cards, so the font is just a little different than pictured!

UPDATED FONT TO MATCH NEW CALENDARS:

Some Family Activities and Acts of Kindness take more effort than others, so mix and match to fit your schedule.

Each set includes blanks for your own ideas and traditions. Only the Bible Reading set is numbered, since it’s meant to be read in order.

After cutting out the cards, simply glue or clip them back-to-back with the number or picture card. You can hang them on a string with clothespins, display them however you like, or tuck them into numbered boxes or sacks you already own.
