We recently moved into a new house, in a new state – almost one year ago in December.  There’s a whole bag of things to learn when you cross state lines (or about 5 state lines in our case, from New York to Tennessee), and you just kind of hope you land in the right place to live.

We were really fortunate to find a fantastic deal on a house that needed a little TLC, but was in a great neighborhood. My husband wanted to be in the country, as far from civilization as possible. Me, with 2 small children, didn’t want so much isolation. I wanted to be a little closer to the schools and stores. And, not to mention, with my husband at work all day, being alone in a secluded area would make me feel a little vulnerable.

Well, we found a happy medium just a few miles from the town center, his job, our church, and the boys’ preschool – just out-of-the-way enough for him – up a mountain and surrounded by woods – but plenty of neighbors clearly in sight.

I pretty much took for granted safety in our neighborhood, often leaving our door unlocked when we ran to Walmart or to the playground. There really wasn’t much cause for worry.

Until I saw a post in our town’s Facebook group about being aware of scammers charading as Census Bureau workers. 

That immediately struck a nerve because just a few days before that, someone claiming to be from the Census Bureau came to my door while I was home alone with the kids. With the kind of door we have and the way it’s situated – I can’t see who is there until I open it. Somewhat naively, I just opened it up and spoke to the person. 

The conversation literally lasted about 15 seconds and all he asked me was if this was a single-family home. He said he was from the Census Bureau, gave me a ripped 1/2 sheet of paper with some information, but never showed me a badge or ID. No distinguishing clothes or hats or uniform to identify himself.

I brought it up in the Facebook group, asking what his motive could have been, if he really was a scammer.  They all kind of agreed that he was probably scoping out the neighbor for a break-in, to see who is home during the day, etc.

Well, that completely unnerved me, and ever since, I’ve been locking the door when we leave and have been saying to my husband that we really need some kind of camera or monitor by the front door to see who is there. I’m home alone with my boys a lot, and it’s a bit unsettling to answer the door without knowing who or what is on the other side.

First, I love that it is wireless and a simple install. It’s a super-easy DIY. My husband just had to drill a hole for the magnetic base outside our house and that’s it.  No crazy wires, no hardwiring. You just hook up the tower to your modem using an included ethernet cable and that’s it. 

 

The cameras themselves are battery-operated, which can be recharged.  Once you set up the tower, you install Arlo Pro 3 on your app, and it pretty much does the rest for you.

Included are 2 cameras, the tower, 2 batteries for each camera, a battery charger, a magnetic base (which is crazy strong!) and a second base that screws into the camera.

We just installed the camera last night, and I’m feeling safer. So here’s what I’m loving about it already:

1| It has a 160-degree range of view. That’s huge! I have it set up where you can see my front door as well as my driveway.  Here you can see me next to the door as well as in the driveway. All in one camera-position.

2| You can zoom-in, in color, with amazing clarity – 2K HDR.  Look how crystal-clear those above pictures are! Those are screenshots!

3| It has a lot of special security features that make me feel a lot safer: color night vision, an automatic spotlight, (a deterrent to anyone trying to break in during the night), 2-way audio and a built-in siren! Love that!

4| Included is a 3-month subscription to Arlo Smart Home, which notifies you when your camera spots something.

5| It’s also designed to withstand the outdoor elements like rain, sun, heat, and cold. With the location we set up our camera in, it’s important to know that the weather won’t interfere with its effectiveness. It’s a totally sleek, well-built product.

6| It’s ideal for home DIYers like us. No need to hire an expensive company to install security cameras. This one is pretty simple to set up and use. Safer Already with Arlo Pro 3

We’ve just installed the first camera so far, so we can get a feel for it and see where we really want to use the second one. My husband wants more outside monitoring (even just for fun to see some wildlife in our backyard), but I’m leaning towards actually using it as a camera in my sons’ room.
