Sourdough Free Printable Gift Set: Tags, Feeding Instructions, & Bread Care
If you have sourdough starter or sourdough bread that you are looking to gift, and you need a few printable pieces to go along with them, you’re in the right place! Today I’m offering a free printable set that includes sourdough starter tags, sourdough starter feeding instruction cards, sourdough bread tags, and sourdough bread care cards!
Sourdough: A Hot & Healthy Trend
If you’ve been in touch with the world at all in the past few years, I’m sure you’ve seen or have been a part of the sourdough bandwagon that has just completely taken off.
I know for many people, this has been a way of life for a while. Or maybe, you jumped on when Covid threatened the availability of bread (& toilet paper, but that’s neither here nor there). That was when I had my first go with sourdough, too.
However, once bread was back on the grocery store shelves, I kind of gave that up.
However (again), when I really started seeing just how compromised our packaged food items are (don’t get me started on that soapbox!), I got back into it again.
To be honest, I’m really the only one in my house who eats it (I’m still working on healthy habits with my sons), so I don’t make it very often (tip: Aldi sells sliced sourdough with just 3 ingredients – flour, salt, & water!).
But I still have my sourdough starter because I love all the recipes I can make with sourdough discard! Especially the sourdough discard desserts!
But the idea for this whole printable set came because last year, we had a Christmas party with my homeschool co-op moms where you had to bring something homemade. I decided to bring sourdough starter!
I wanted to pretty it up a little and include some instructions. I actually looked for a printable set but couldn’t find any!
Well, being no stranger to creating what I can’t find, I figured I should make my own and share it with others, because I can’t possibly be the only one looking for that!
So today I’m sharing sourdough starter tags, sourdough bread tags, sourdough starter feeding instructions, and sourdough bread care.

Let me break down what is included in the free printable sourdough bundle.
Sourdough Starter Printable Tags
You’ll get printable tags to include with your starter. These can be printed out on cardstock and attach with baker’s twine, ribbon, or raffia.
You can also print them on Avery round labels (22) and stick to the top of a mason jar or on a brown paper bag if you put the jar inside.
It includes a space to put the date.
There are 3 pages of these tags:
2″ circle for a circle punch (with faint cut lines)
2″ circle tags for Avery Labels (no cut lines, in case it doesn’t print perfectly centered on the labels),
2″ squares, in case you don’t have a 2″ circle punch or labels
Sourdough Starter Feeding Instruction Card
I created this card because if someone hasn’t had active sourdough starter before, these are simple instructions that explain exactly what they need to do.
Here are what the instructions are on the 6×4″ card:
1| Thoroughly mix 1/2 cup starter (113 g) & 1/2 cup of lukewarm, filtered water (113 g).
2| Add 1 scant cup of all- purpose flour (113 g) & mix until smooth (aim for a 1:1:1 weight ratio).
3| Pour mixture into a clean jar & cover with cloth. Mark the height on the jar with a rubber band.
4| Leave at room temperature for 4-12 hours, until starter is active: doubled in size & bubbly.
5|Active starter can be used in a recipe, can be continued to be fed, or stored in the refrigerator.
6|If feeding, scoop out 1/2 cup of starter, & then continue to feed at above 1:1:1 ratio. Discard can be used in other recipes.
7| When refrigerated, feed 1x a week. When ready to use, bring to room temperature, & feed as above 8-12 hours before using to reactivate.
8| Always be sure to keep 1/4 -1/2 cup to feed & grow for future recipes.

Sourdough Bread Tags
These tags can be used if you are giving bread as a gift.
There are two versions – one with a date, and one that says, ‘Baked with Love.’
You might choose to omit the date if the bread was frozen first and then defrosted.
This tag coordinates with this adorable bread bag, which would be extra-lovely to gift your bread in. It comes in 2 colors (I have both!), and I also have this striped farmhouse style bread bag as well.
I printed these tags on 2″ Avery labels, and then I used a 2.5″ circle punch to stick the label onto for a bigger tag with something a little extra!
I also have a farmhouse striped bread bag, which I love also!
Sourdough Bread Care Card
If you are giving bread as a gift, here’s a card to include with it!
1| For best results, eat bread within 2-3 days.
2| Store in a paper bag or bread bag, in a cool, dry place, as storing bread in refrigerator will dry it out.
3| Bread can be frozen in a freezer safe bag for up to 6 months. Slicing bread before freezing allows you to defrost as much or as little as you like.
4|To defrost, leave at room temperature or place in toaster on defrost setting, if sliced.
5| To revive stale bread, dampen with water & place in oven at 300 for 10-15 minutes.
Not Included: Sourdough Bread Recipe (and Why)
I went back and forth about included a printable sourdough recipe for you to include, but I decided against it for a few reasons.
1| If you are gifting starter, chances are that you already have a favorite sourdough recipe you use. I figured that would be the one you would choose to include. Including a favorite recipe from you, the giver, is a personal touch!
2| Creating designs is more my gig than baking sourdough – I’m still an amateur in that area! I didn’t feel right about ‘repurposing’ someone else’s recipe to include here.
3| You can easily print out your favorite sourdough recipe from the original website! Most blogs have a ‘print’ option on the recipes, so you can print out all of those detailed instructions.
