The Question of She Shed Flooring
She sheds have been all the rage lately. A place for a woman to call her own. Most women can handle the decorating part, but the flooring might not be in their wheelhouse (just me?).
To that end, you’ll want to consider all kinds of flooring options, even if it may or may not involve enlisting the help of the man of the house.
If you’ve been dreaming about a she shed, and you’re trying to think it through logistically, from the beginning to end, chances are you’ve mulled over the idea of flooring. After deciding on the shed you want (or if you’ll repurpose a storage shed, tool shed, or playhouse you already have), determining its intended use, flooring is probably one of the next considerations. (Or it should be.)
The right flooring for your she shed is essential. Not only will it give your space a sense of cohesiveness and continuity, but it will also ensure that your space stays clean and bacteria-free.
When thinking about your floor, you want it to be tough enough to withstand the elements, to provide a stable, level surface for your belongings, and to protect your precious things from dirt, dust, and moisture.
So, you’re right to give it some focused thought. Focus is everything, right?
First Things First: A Dry, Level Foundation
Whether you’re purchasing a prefabricated shed or choosing from various shed kits (that may or may not come with a floor), the first step is to think about the foundation you’ll place it on.
For example, you might have a patio or slab of concrete where it can go. Or you might have (or need to build) a floating deck. In those cases, you’re putting your shed on a dry surface. However, if you want a wooden shed in the middle of the lawn, you’ll want to think about the different kind of moisture barriers you’ll need.
If you need a deck or patio area to put your shed, these easy DIY deck and patio projects can offer some simple help for your she shed foundation.
Once your foundation is in place, you can go ahead and plan for your flooring and analyze different flooring materials.
With so many different flooring options on the market, it can be hard to know the best choice. To help you make this decision, here are some of the best outdoor she shed flooring ideas.
Keep in mind that some sheds come with floors or a basic floor. It’s up to you how much you want to modify or add on to that – just how cozy or how rustic you want your she-shed.
Important Factors to Consider When Choosing the Perfect She Shed Flooring
There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing the perfect outdoor flooring. These include the type, color, pattern, and material. Here are a few things to keep in mind.
Location
Where will the shed that needs the outdoor flooring be installed? We talked about foundation in the above paragraph; the best outdoor flooring option is the one that is perfect for the space and will work with the foundation you’ve chosen.
Maintenance
How often will you need to clean the outdoor flooring? What type of maintenance does it require? A shed floor covering should be durable and easy to clean and maintain, depending on what you plan to use your she shed for.
Weather
Is weather a factor for your flooring? For example, will you have to walk a bit from your house to your she shed? Are you walking over concrete or grass? Will water or dirt be tracked into your she-shed? Is your foundation protected from water?
Installation
What is required for installation? Is there an installation cost? How difficult is it to install? Can you DIY it or do you need to hire someone?
Style
What type of style are you going for? The best outdoor flooring should complement the overall aesthetic of your space.
Price
How much will the outdoor flooring cost? Is it affordable? Is it worth the investment? If i
Purpose
Will your flooring suit the purpose for your shed? For example, if you have more of a working shed (DIYs, gardening), you may be on your feet a lot. You’ll want a floor that has some kind of give to it (i.e. – not concrete) as well as something that’s easy to clean. (If you’re on the fence, check out this article for the best ways you can use a she shed!)
No matter what type of flooring you choose, make sure it’s durable and weather-resistant. With a little bit of research, you can find the perfect flooring for your outdoor shed.
Best Flooring for an Outdoor She Shed (that already comes with a basic floor)

As I mentioned, chances are your shed came a basic floor – at least a type of plywood floor or something similar. We’ll use that at our jumping out point and build a new floor from there. Good?
At the end, we’ll touch on some options if your shed doesn’t come with a floor.
Paint and Rugs
Floor paint is absolutely a best option if you’re looking for a budget-friendly choice. Paint is magical, in my opinion, and super-cheap. You can use floor paint in a solid color and just add some cozy throw rugs. You also can choose to stencil your floor with paint, which is fun way to decorate.
You can even throw down an old carpet in there as well. Paint is one of the best ways to deal with just about any DIY or decor issue, making a huge difference.
Peel-and-Stick Vinyl Flooring
It’s no secret around my house how much I love peel and stick flooring. This kind of vinyl flooring is a great choice because it is so inexpensive – and they have leveled up the quality so much in recent days.
You can get this as floor tiles, planks, faux brick… lots of ways to make a statement! And you do not need to be a master to do this. It’s a simple DIY project that really anyone can do, giving a classic look. It’s an excellent option.
Floating Floor LVP
Pergo Floors and LVP (luxury vinyl plank) are another great option if you want your floor and she shed to have a more polished look. Vinyl laminate flooring for a shed a step up from peel and stick and requires just a little more skill (usually it’s a click and lock process), but it also looks amazing, and they last a long time.
A floor like this really complements a modern design on the inside.
Wood Plank Floor
You could also choose a real wood plank floor to put in your she shed as well. It would give you all the rustic feels and has a more natural look to it.
Many hardwood floors are tongue and groove for an easy install, and while it might be on the more costly end of flooring choices, it’s something you might consider if you’re using it for a home office, meeting with clients, or other higher-end usage.
Plastic Flooring
The shed you purchase may already have a plastic floor; in that case, you could probably keep it as is and just add some rugs.
Or if you like the durability of plastic as well the water protection factor, but want something a little nicer, try plastic floor tiles. They come in a variety of colors and styles. They are easy to install by simply locking together!
Plastic floors are ideal if your shed is more of a hands-on workspace – a place that might get dirty but you want something easy to clean, such as a garden or greenhouse, a pottery studio, or a place for larger DIYs or furniture restoration. It’s also an ideal waterproof floor option.
It’s durable, easy to clean, and simple to install.
Raised Floor Tiles
Raised floor tiles are just what they sound like – tiles that have some air space underneath and offer a little ‘give’ on the surface. This is a great for a dance studio or gym, allowing air flow underneath, which can prevent growth of mold or mildew. It comes in all kinds of patterns, so if you want a fancier feel, you’ve got lots of options!
Horse Stall Rubber Mats and Flooring
Don’t let the ‘horse stall’ throw you – horse stall rubber mats and flooring serve many purposes! It might be something you’d be interested in if your she shed is more of a working space rather than a lounging space.
If you plan to be on your feel a lot, this also would be a great option as it can help with back support. An exercise or yoga studio might benefit from this kind of flooring. It’s thicker than your traditional roll-out rubber mat flooring.
Interlocking Foam Floor Tiles
Similar to rubber mats, foam flooring is a great option! I love this choice if you might have littles ones hanging out with you and you need a soft area for them to play.
Foam floors easily snap into place, and you have so many possibilities. As with rubber mats, it’s also great for exercising and yoga. They come in all kinds of designs and patterns – marble, wood tones – you really can pretty it up!
Linoleum Sheet Flooring
You also can buy sections of large rolls of linoleum for a shed. This is a great flooring choice if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, but you want a little more of a polished look. It’s especially good in a place where it might get a little messy, because they are so easy to clean! It’s a quick easy way to get covering on the ground without spending a lot!
Home Depot recently expanded their line to include a wide selection of linoleum flooring in lots of different patterns (even stone!).
Cork Flooring
Cork flooring comes in rolls and is also easy on your back, if your shed will be somewhere that you’ll be on your feet a lot. It’s an inexpensive option and can be a smart choice if it’s more of a working space than a relaxing space!
Indoor/Outdoor Carpet
Another option for flooring is an indoor/outdoor carpet which would be great for a she shed. This can be purchased both in rolls and tiles.
Carpets like this can handle a lot of wear and tear and can warm up the space in your she shed without having to spend a lot or worrying about how a nicer carpet will handle all the in and out.

Shed Flooring Options for Your Outdoor She Shed That Doesn’t Have a Floor Already
If your shed doesn’t have a floor, then really, you’ll want to think about what kind of surface you want to build it on. If you don’t already have a place, here are some options. Then, you can add most of the above flooring to whatever you choose for your base floor.
Concrete
One of the most popular options is a concrete shed base. It’s durable, weather-resistant, and easy to clean. Plus, it provides a solid foundation that will keep your belongings safe and sound.
Concrete floors have come a long way and are available in different colors and patterns, including natural and artificial.
A concrete slab is an excellent choice for high-traffic areas and can withstand heavy loads. You’ll always want to make sure your concrete floor is level before building your shed.
A natural concrete floor looks beautiful and is resistant to damage, including uneven surfaces and fading. Artificial concrete shed floor options are typically more affordable and durable than natural stone, making them the perfect choice for a tight budget.
You can use concrete paint to create a unique look for your floor or (stenciling is always a unique way to cover concrete!) Just be sure you use a concrete sealer before you paint! Epoxy coating on top of concrete also provides a good, hard floor, especially for an area that might take a beating.
Brick
Brick is a popular exterior flooring option. It is available in various colors and patterns. Brick would be charming in a shed that is a greenhouse or garden type shed, no other floor needed!
Decks
An outdoor deck makes a perfect outdoor flooring option for a she shed with no existing floor. They are generally made of wood or composite materials. Composite decks are lightweight and durable, making them ideal for outdoor flooring and even come in easy-to-put-together snapping floor tiles.
When choosing a decking material, ensure that it’s resistant to weather conditions and pests. Wood decks are typically the most affordable option, but they are not resistant to weather conditions, wood rot, and pests, such as termites and mosquitoes.
Decks provide inherent wood floors to your shed, without having to do much more. A wooden floor is a perfect option if you want to create a rustic feel in your outdoor space. You can either build a floating deck or place your shed on top of an existing one, if it can support the weight.
Patios
If you have patio space available, it may just be the right spot to put your shed. As mentioned above, you’ll probably want to put something softer on top of it, depending on what you’re using it for. A patio might be the more obvious choice because of its expansive size and accessibility.
Synthetic Turf
Synthetic turf is one of the most popular options for outdoor flooring. You can get types that are similar to outdoor carpeting and just roll it out before you build your shed. However, the material is pretty thin and not always protect your belongings from water damage, so it’s a good idea to have another more durable surface underneath.
Rubber Flooring
Rubber flooring is one of the most durable and resilient types of flooring. This comes in a large roll (or you can use separate tiles or mats, as listed above), and you can lay this down for a waterproof foundation. Rubber is slippery when wet, so it wouldn’t be ideal for water, but you can lay this down first and put your shed on top of it, especially if your shed is going on the grass.
Flooring: The Perfect Foundation for Your She Shed Dreams
If you want to create the perfect outdoor space inside your shed, you’ll need to choose the right flooring to build upon, literally and figuratively. This will help your shed feel more complete and your perfect personal space away from it all.
The right flooring will make your outdoor space feel complete and ensure that your area stays clean and bacteria-free.
Whatever you choose, your shed will look amazing as you choose the right flooring that complements and coordinates with the entire look and feel you’re going for in your she shed. It’s all you, sister.
