Summer Relaxation & Outdoor Living Just a Few Footsteps Away
When I had my small house in New York, I dreamed of having a front porch to relax on. While I don’t have a wrap-around porch or oodles of space (though I keep lobbying for a porch remodel), my front porch has been one of my favorite things to decorate each season.
I wasn’t always big on decorating the porch for summer; I figured that what I had out for spring would do.
But it really is a totally different vibe for summer than it is for spring.
For me, the summer decor is fresh and vibrant, while also embracing relaxation and comfort at the same time.
That might seem like a bit of a contrast, but it’s really the best of both worlds.
What Should I Put on My Front Porch for Summer? (Budget-Friendly Tips)
In the picture below, you’ll see all kinds of porch decorating ideas, with all kinds of porch decor. What you do with your porch primarily will depend on the kind of space and budget you have available.
You’ll see inspiration pics for both ends of the spectrum, for both space and budget.
As with all decorating, it’s really about what make you feel most comfortable, at home, and at peace. It’s what YOU like, the feeling you want to create.
There are lots of unique ways to go about decorating your porch, even if money is tight. Yard sales, thrift stores, and Facebook Marketplace are always great options to get decor and accessories inexpensively.
Repurposing what you have and summer DIY projects are still some of my favorite ways to decorate!
Don’t forget about end of summer clearance – which really happens right after 4th of July! Still plenty of summer time let to utilize those bargains!
Decorating Ideas for Small Porches
If you just have a stoop or just a landing with a few steps, you can still create a gorgeous front porch for summer.
Try adding porch plants, flowers, and hanging flower baskets. If you don’t have ground space, look up! See what you can hang on the surrounding walls or from the porch ceiling – a DIY bunting, a cute porch sign or hanging outdoor lights.
A mix of unique planters on the ground or lining the steps, paired with outdoor lanterns, can really set your porch apart when you’re short on space.
Even just a summer wreath on the door adds vibrancy.
A rug layered underneath a welcome mat is a perfect addition for a small porch, too.
If your porch is a little larger than just a stoop with a little bit of a landing area, try adding small porch furniture.
It doesn’t have to be an entire outdoor furniture set. It can be as simple as a rocker or an Adirondack chair. Throw in a bright pillow along with vibrant flowers, and you have instant charm.
Decorating Ideas for Large Porches
‘Large’ can be a little relative, and how you decorate will depend on your porch design and layout.
If you have space for entertaining and a larger seating area, that’s the way to go. Outdoor living on the front porch is quintessentially summer!
You can have an outdoor sectional with a coffee table, anchored by an outdoor rug.
You can have a bistro table with chairs on either side.
Maybe you have the room for a porch swing – or even side by side hanging chairs. All of those are gorgeous options.
I recommend adding in some kind of side table or end table near any seating area. You know, a place to set down the sweet tea.😉 You can even use a plant stand!
You can also create vignettes by dividing your porch up into sections, especially if it’s really large. You can do that by mix and matching the different ideas mentioned above!
Decorating doesn’t require a full porch renovation. A summer porch makeover can be pretty simple, and chances are, you already have existing decor that can be used or repurposed into DIY porch decor.
