Thoughtful Gifts for Mom (That Says She Wants Nothing)

OK, dads, sons, daughters – listen up.  This one’s for you today.

{Moms, keep reading, because you may want to pass this on to the dads or you may have your own mom you’re shopping for.}

Sometimes Mom can be the hardest person of all to choose a gift for. In some ways, it might be easy because I’m sure she’ll love just any gift from her family. But in other ways, it can be really hard because you want it to be so special. So just what would be an amazing and perfect gift for Mom?

Well, there are a few ways you can go about this.

First, the best way to find out what your mom wants for her birthday, for Christmas, for Mother’s Day is to just ask her!  I’m sure she can tell you in about .5 seconds flat what would really mean the most to her.  And if she tells you?  Do not pass Go, do not collect $200 – just do it!!!

If you don’t want to go that route or maybe she’s more subtle or maybe you want to surprise her, well, continue reading.

Unique Gift Ideas for Mom That She Will Totally Love and Appreciate

I did some crowdsourcing of my own in some Facebook groups and on my personal page, and the answers were overwhelmingly similar from mom to mom.  The same kinds of things just kept coming up over and over and over again.  And, hint, hint – for the most part, they are NOT things.  What moms really wants falls into a few categories, as you’ll see below.

1|Moms Want a Break

This might look different for every mom, but there were many commonalities.  A mom does so much to keep a home functioning, the kids alive and fed, and Dad dressed and happy.  Her job is never done.  Never. She does not get a day off. She does not get a vacation. Ever.

Chances are, Mom is likely exhausted. Give her a break.  Here are some ideas, and if you are feeling generous, combine a few of them together and really ‘wow’ her. These are perfect for someone who doesn’t want a material gift:

Sleep

Let her sleep in.  Let her take a nap.  Give her a night in a hotel where she can wake up at her leisure. This woman is TIRED.  Uninterrupted sleep with no alarm to wake her up would mean the universe to her.

A Clean House

Trust me on this one.  A tired mom would like nothing better than for the family to clean the house top to bottom – vacuum, dust, bathrooms, laundry, change sheets, clean windows – the works.  It sounds so practical and unromantic, but she will think y’all are the most thoughtful family in the universe if you can make this happen. If you include cleaning her car in the deal, well, you can do no wrong, and you’ve just earned yourself some serious collateral.

A Day Off From Cooking

Whether she wants to go out to eat or you guys take care of the cooking in-house (and clean up after!), she would love, for one day, not to be responsible for feeding anyone else but herself.  Even better if you are responsible for feeding her.

Peace and Quiet

Likely, this is on the dads, but other family members can jump in here. For one day, run interference and do not let your kids near her before they go through you. Be the referee.  Be the go-to person your kids come to for help, for problems, for questions.  Let mom have the day off from being the mediator and helper for all the humans in the house. Mom is off-duty. And if you can take the kiddos out of the house for a while (because we all know that moms have a hard time letting go and not micro- managing their little kingdoms and not listening with one ear the entire time), even better.

A Scheduled Day to Herself

It doesn’t have to take place on the actual special day, but plan a day where, from morning until night, everything is taken care of and mom is on her own – to shop, to sleep, to get lunch with friends, to spend a night in a hotel to take a bath and read a book uninterrupted – whatever. Her choice. Or maybe, you take the kids out for the day and leave her in the house alone to sleep, binge watch This is Us and eat ice cream.  She’d love it either way.  On this day, she is not in charge and can just be on her own.

2| Moms Want to Be Pampered

For us moms, it’s hard to remember what it feels like to be that pretty girl who was all that back in the day.  For her to know that she is still that woman inside, underneath the messy hair and stained clothes and tired eyes will do wonders for her well-being.

She wants to feel like a woman, not just a mom. The idea is that this kind of gift would really make her feel like a girl and something she probably would not spend money on herself. Here are some ways you can provide some pampering for mom:

A Manicure/Pedicure

A Massage

A Spa Day

A New Haircut/Color

A Foot Massage

A New Outfit and Shoes

A Facial

A Hair/Make-Up Session (even better if it’s before a date night!)

3| Moms Want Quality Time with Their Families

A parent and child holding hands in a desert landscape with cacti and mountains in the distance, symbolizing outdoor family adventures and meaningful moments, perfect for building cherished memories. Maybe your life is really hectic, and quality time together doesn’t happen too often for your family. Mom might really be craving time together as a family (or couple). If she has been hinting at this – gently or maybe as subtle as a Mack truck, take the hint! Plan something special as a family – or maybe just quality time with just you and her – husband/wife, mother/son, mother/daughter, mother/grandkids.  Again – tune in to her.  Chances are, she has been letting you what is important to her.  The key to this is that you need to take care of all the details and not make her do any of it!  That’s part of the gift!!!  Here are some suggestions:

A Dinner and Date Night with Dad (with the babysitter all taken care of)

A Family Brunch or Meal Out Together

A Family Hike

A Fun Day at Home with the Kids

A Weekend Away with the Family

A Family Day at an Amusement Park

A Picnic in the Park

A Fun Family Activity (Zoo, Paintball, City Trip, Baseball Game)

A Mother/Daughter Date

A Mother/Son Date

4| Mom May Want an Actual Gift

OK, some moms actually want a gift! Totally fine!  Moms typically put themselves last, so this is a great time to get her something she’s been wanting. Maybe she’s been eyeing a new camera or a tablet or an Instant Pot or a power tool (don’t laugh – my sisters love them!) or a new purse. Again, if you aren’t sure what, ask her! I bet she would much rather forego the surprise than to get a token gift she really didn’t want (unless the surprise is what she wants!).

If you do want to go the surprise route and come up with something special, here are some gift ideas that are a little out of the box and would likely make her really happy!

A Family Photo Shoot (or a Mom and Me Photo Shoot)

A Subscription Box

Cratejoy has a bunch of fantastic ones to choose from! Perfect for moms, and it gives to her all year long! My personal favorite: FabFitFun – a box of fashion, jewelry, make-up lotions, and more- delivered every season!

Stitch Fix Subscription – Who doesn’t want a personal shopper and have amazing clothes show up on her doorstep?

A Gift Card to Her Favorite Store

(I know that sounds generic, but most women love to shop, so it’s like 2 gifts in 1! Include a babysitter as part of the gift? 3 gifts in 1!)

A Canvas of Her Favorite Family Picture

Easy Canvas Prints is a stellar choice!

Creative Live

This is a fantastic online program of all sorts of creative classes such as photography, crafts, music, art, design, etc.  This is PERFECT for the mom who wants to reinvent herself or needs a creative outlet.

Mother’s Ring

Amazon has many beautiful selections of affordable Mother’s Rings – with birthstone and names.

A Gym Membership or Fitness Class

(Tread lightly here! Make sure this is something she really wants or it might be taken the wrong way! You can also throw in this anti-bacterial workout towel for good measure!)

A Cooking Class

(or other class she would love- painting, photography, etc.  The key is that it is something she would enjoy!)

A Paint Party Night with Friends

A Shopping Spree

A Scrapbook

(already filled up, not one for her to make!)

Photo Album or Custom Photo Gift

A Custom Family Cookbook

This is a great project to gather all of the family recipes and create a book for her to preserve them all! You can see the details of how I made my own family cookbook here!

All the Sweets

If mom has a sweet tooth, you need to give a Sugar Wish gift... she’ll be able to pick out the sweets she wants – cookies, candy, popcorn, etc. and trust me, it is sooooo good! There are also keto and gluten-free options as well!

Flowers and a Heartfelt Card

With more than just your signature! A meaningful note will mean the world.

A Perfect Gift for the Mom Who Works So Hard

Ok, there you go! I know you love and appreciate your mom and all she does for your family.  But SHE needs to know you do, in a tangible, concrete way!  Finding a way to show her just how special she is to you would send her over the moon.

Now, Moms – we all know I’m preaching to the choir here, and it’s probably all the moms reading this! It’s up to you to find a way to get this in front of your husband’s or kids’ face!   Moms are all kinds of resourceful, so I know you can get the job done! 🙂

Free Printable Gift Guide to Help Out

And, if you need a little help, I’ve created a printable version of this list of gift ideas!

Just print it out, circle your gift of choice – or circle a few and let the family pick! Then, leave it in a place where your husband will ‘accidentally’ find it.  Or, if your family doesn’t really get ‘subtle,’ leave it in a place where you know they will find it.

{Whenever I need to leave a message for my husband, I tape it to the remote control.  No joke. Works every time.} There’s also a place where you can write in your gift choice. Just right click to save the image to your computer and print! Easy peasy!

Moms – You are AMAZING

Moms, we all know it’s not about the gifts or grand gestures.  My hope is that, by the end of the day, you feel loved and appreciated, no matter how fumbled those attempts of showing it might be.  And, we all know that whether your birthday or Christmas or Mother’s Day is a huge success or a bigger mess for us to clean up, we will continue to be the bests moms we know how to be, thanks, or no thanks.  Because that’s just what moms do.

Mama, you are amazing. And you are appreciated.
