What to Do with All. The. Strawberries.

So, strawberry picking…. have you done this with your kids yet?!?

Vivid image of a woman and two children exploring a lush strawberry farm on a sunny day, surrounded by vibrant greenery and expansive open fields, perfect for outdoor family activities. The last time I went strawberry picking was probably when I was in 3rd or 4th grade on a Sunday School trip. I don’t remember anything about it, except that we did it.

Trying to recreate an old-fashioned childhood for my boys, I rallied the troops last week, grabbed my neighbor and her daughter (because who wants to be alone in endless patches of strawberries with 3-year-old twins who can run for miles?) and to the fields we went.

As I imagined they would, the boys had a blast.  A good portion of the time consisted of them putting strawberries in the basket and me tossing them out, but we walked away with about a pound of decent-looking, juicy strawberries.

If you’ve been strawberry picking, your kids may have gotten caught up in the excitement of old-time childhood, and you may have ended up with an exorbitant amount of strawberries.

What. To. Do. With. All. Those. Strawberries?????

Right?!?

So, to use up all those strawberries, I’ve gathered some amazing picks.

In fact, I think you’ll want to make pretty much all of them and work your way through your berry patch strawberries.

I love it when fresh strawberries are in season. To me, they are the quintessential fruit of summer (right behind watermelon), and I love that there are so many delicious strawberry desserts and treats you can make.

And don’t limit yourself to desserts – they’re also amazing in salads (you can check out 35 refreshing summer salads here, many of which include strawberries and other fruit!) You can really eat your way through the berry patch all summer long.

  1. Each year, as strawberry season approaches, I go a little crazy. The first day of strawberry season is cause for celebration around my house – the best day of the year. My problem is that I eat so many of the berries on the way home from the farm, I don’t have enough left to make desserts.

This year, around the middle of the season, I had calmed down enough to bring home berries and make strawberry pie (hubby’s request for Father’s Day), strawberry jam, strawberry muffins and strawberry shortcake, which we eat as a main course, rather than a dessert.

My boys (who are now adults) are still traumatized from being forced to pick strawberries when they were young. They remind me of child labor laws each year at strawberry season, as they are stuffing their mouths with shortcake.

Thanks for the recipe collection. Sadly, strawberry season is over here, but there is always next year!!!

    1. I love these stories, Laurie! How fun (and funny!) I’m so bummed we picked at the tail-end of the season…. I knew I was late getting this post up, too… but it makes me excited to get on my game next year. I definitely want to make it a ‘tradition’ thing w/ the boys! (Child labor and all! 😉 ) Thanks so much for coming over and reading, Laurie! 🙂
