Easy 4th of July Patriotic Flag Mini Cupcakes or Muffins
Looking for a quick and festive treat to celebrate the 4th of July? These Patriotic Mini Cupcakes (or Muffins!) are a perfect blend of easy and adorable. You can serve this as a sweet breakfast or a fun dessert – and it comes together so quickly with just a few ingredients!

A Simple Treat or Festive Breakfast for Independence Day
My family lovvvvves celebrating all the patriotic holidays. Both my husband’s and my grandfather were in the military, and I’m positive that if you cut my husband, he would bleed red, white, and blue.
We love really going all out in all kinds of ways with both decorations and food to make Memorial Day and 4th of July one of our big holidays to celebrate.
And as a busy mom, I’m always looking for simple hacks to do this!
This idea for mini cupcakes or mini muffins really checks off all the boxes. It’s perfect for something to bring or serve at an Independence Day gathering.

Or, it works if it’s just you and your family doing something a little special to celebrate.
You only need a few simple ingredients, with a few easy steps! That is right up my alley!
Ingredients for Mini Cupcakes or Muffins

- 1 box of your favorite cupcake or muffin mix (plus ingredients to make them)
- Mini cupcake liners – patriotic designs work best! These are the ones I used!
- 24 count mini muffin pan
- White frosting (white, cream cheese or vanilla) for cupcakes OR whipped cream cheese for muffins
- Fresh blueberries
- Fresh strawberries, sliced thin

How to Make Patriotic Mini Cupcakes or Muffins:
1| Prepare your batter according to the directions on the box.
You can use a cupcake mix for a sweet treat or a muffin mix (like blueberry or chocolate chip) for a breakfast option.
2| Line a mini muffin pan with patriotic-themed mini liners and fill cups.
I recommend filling cups about 2/3 full. Any higher, they will spill over the top when cooked. Which is fine – but just so you’re aware!

3| Bake according to the package instructions.
*** Mini muffins need less time to cook than regular cupcakes. If there’s no time on the instructions for mini muffins, I’ll start checking them about 1/2 way though.
Let them cool completely before decorating. I like to refrigerate mine for about an hour.

4| Frost the cupcakes in white.
If using cupcakes, frost each one with cream cheese or vanilla frosting.
If using muffins, spread a light layer of whipped cream cheese on top.
5| Assemble in a flag shape
On a large cookie sheet or serving tray, arrange the mini cupcakes in rows of 5 or 6 down and 8 across.
This gives you a little ‘wiggle room’ if you lose a few cupcakes along the way!

In the upper left corner (about 4 cupcakes across and 3 rows down), place 2 blueberries on each cupcake to form the “stars” section of the flag.

On the remaining cupcakes or muffins, top with thinly sliced strawberries to create the red “stripes.”
***Be aware that the juice from the strawberries can ‘bleed’ a little. And sometimes, the strawberries can slide off!
I recommend not placing the strawberries until just before you are going to serve. And be sure to give them a little ‘push’ into the frosting so they don’t slide!

Serve and Enjoy!
This simple, no-fuss recipe is perfect for busy mornings or last-minute party prep.

Here’s another variation using just 24 mini cupcakes with 4 rows of 6 cupcakes.
In this case, the blueberries go on the first 3 cupcakes in the first 2 rows, in the upper left hand corner.
All the rest get a strawberry slice.

Plus, it’s kid-friendly and totally customizable. Swap in raspberries or use dairy-free frosting—whatever works for your family!
