How to Host the Best Craft Night Party Ever

This past summer, I had the girls from my church small group over for a craft night. This was the first time I had done something like this – for any group of friends – and I’m not sure why, but I had such anxiety about it!
I knew God had been prompting my heart for a while to open up my home to others for fellowship and community. But I felt so self-conscious about it, even though I’ve known a few of the ladies for years!
I decided on a craft party because I have this serious phobia of awkward silence. I thought that if we at least had crafts to keep our hands busy, it would avoid any potential moment that might result in a few seconds (or minutes) of silence.
For my 1st party, I kept it simple and casual. I knew over-thinking would just stress me out.
For food, I had everyone bringing a snack to share (SOP for our group).
For the craft, I put out a variety of different materials (paint, tissue paper, scrapbook paper, stickers, washi tape, stamps, etc.).
Then, I put out a variety of different things to decorate using mixed media, including bookmarks, magnets, notebooks, tags, wooden craft pencil holders & trays.
They were simple crafts that didn’t require any special skill. And it ended up being a great night!

So today, I want to share some more developed ideas to help you have all your boxes checked to throw your own craft party.
Why Host a Craft Night Party?
If you’re on the fence about hosting a craft night, let me offer a few more reasons to give it a try.
- Community and friendship: These kinds of parties are more than just a creative outlet—they’re a chance to connect with others & build friendships (or deepen the ones you have).
- Stress relief and creativity: Crafting is actually a calming and refreshing activity. Being creative and using our hands is so good for our mental health – and doing it with friends releases all kinds of feel-good hormones.
- Budget-friendly fun: A craft night is cheaper than going out – and you don’t have to feel rushed to leave the restaurant. Guests can stay as late as you let them! And bonus – everyone leaves with something pretty at the end of the night!
- The practice of hospitality: Hosting a night for your small group, ladies in your church, or even just women you know from the community is a great way to bless others, share God’s love, and practice biblical hospitality. It’s just another opportunity to use our homes for His glory.
What You Need to Plan a Craft Night Party
A successful craft night doesn’t need to be micromanaged. Just a little prep and organization ahead of time is all you’ll need.
- Decide on a menu: Figure out ahead of time what you’ll provide for snacks and/or what you’ll ask guests to bring. For my party, we just said, ‘bring anything’ and kept it casual. And it worked great!
- Determine costs: Some women like to fund the craft as a gift to their friends; others ask the ladies to chip in a certain dollar amount. Others encourage women to bring their own supplies & you can swap & craft together. The only ‘rule’ is to let everyone know ahead of time how it will work.
- Supplies & setup: Choose your crafts ahead of time and gather everything you’ll need. Pre-measure and/or pre-cut materials or templates to save time or make things easier. You can also have a few options using the same materials – painting different objects, decorating with a variety of media, etc.
- Choosing the right space: A large table, good lighting, and comfortable seating are really all you need. If necessary, protect your table with newspaper or craft mats.
- Create a sample: Be sure to have an example of the project or projects you’re creating as well as any inspirational pictures or samples for them to look at. If it’s a complicated project, you can include printed instructions.
These are guidelines, by the way. Sometimes, you can pull up chairs around your dining table, throw some craft supplies in the center, and the night will take care of itself.

Food & Drinks for Craft Night
No craft night is complete without delicious, easy-to-serve snacks. You can asks guest to bring something so it’s pot-luck style – or you can be the hostess with the mostess!
Here are some simple food ideas:
- Food Bar: A food bar works well if you want guests to eat, then craft! If not, these other ideas are perfect for guests to nosh while creating.
- Finger foods & appetizers: Easy hand-held grab-and-go individual appetizers work great! Easy for guests to snack and eat.
- Charcuterie or grazing boards: Snack boards are usually less messy than dips and other appetizers. Seasonal drinks: Warm apple cider in the fall, hot cocoa in the winter, or fun tea drinks any time. La Croix, flavored seltzer, & infused water is another great drink option.
- Sweet treats: Keep them simple so guests can snack while crafting—cookies, small muffins, or other individually served desserts are great, too!
Other Random Suggestions for a Smashing Craft Night
- Keep projects simple: 1–2 hour crafts work best so no one feels rushed. You don’t want one that they finish in 10 minutes, but you don’t want one so complex they don’t finish. If it’s a quick craft, allow them to make several or offer different varieties and options.
- Take pictures: Don’t forget to snap pics of finished projects – and the group selfie, of course!
- Encourage fellowship over perfection: There might be the temptation to compare skills or the end results. None of that! Encourage guests that the fun is in doing it together, not making it perfect.
