Want to throw a spectacular party but concerned about safety and social distancing? Try individual appetizers! Setting out a buffet of self-serve finger foods and individual apps is the way to go! These Covid-friendly appetizers ideal for any occasion where you’ll be mixing and mingling– Mother’s Day brunch, Easter, bridal and baby showers, graduation parties – any time you’re serving a crowd!
A New Way to Mingle: Socially Distant Gatherings
Since COVID, life has changed a lot. There so are many times when I’ve thought, “Wow, I didn’t see that coming.”
So many changes, in ways I wouldn’t have anticipated. Not all of them have been bad, though. I know that on more than one occasion, it has caused me (and all of us, really), to be creative and make it work.
And, as I don’t see socializing face-to-face EVER coming to an end, one thing we’ve had to revamp is parties and entertaining.
We all have our opinions about keeping our bubbles, masking, and social distancing – and, we are not going to talk about that here. Live and let live. Yet, life goes on, and parties are still going to happen.
Instead, let’s talk about ways to do it that provide a safe environment for your guests without diminishing the gathering and socialization that we all desperately need and crave.
A big factor that has been creatively changed up is how we serve food. I remember when sit-down dinners used to be considered the ‘classy’ and ‘fancy’ choice. These days, lots of people are going for self-serve buffet tables, for a lot of good reasons.
While it seems less formal (and in lots of ways, it is, but that’s fine!), it can give your guests room to space themselves out and enjoy the food at their leisure – when the table is less crowded.
It also gives them more chances to mingle without being tied to a table, graze and visit the table several times. It’s less about being weighed down with a heavy meal and more about opportunities to sample all the all the delicious food!
I’ve always been a big fan of the buffet, but if you want to take safety even a little further, how about single-serving food items – individually ‘wrapped’ snacks or plated on buffet tables.?
Desserts have been more commonly served this way, but these days, appetizers are stealing the show.
What Do I Need for Single Serve Appetizers for a Crowd?

Buffet tables are really nothing new and have become super-trendy because you can make them so pretty and get really creative with your displays.
However, if you aren’t wanting your guests to be breathing over the casseroles or touching the spatulas and serving spoons themselves, you can lay them out as individual appetizers – so easy just to grab-and-go.
When you’re making these kinds of appetizers, for sure, you can serve them plated, with forks. But as you go through this list, you’ll see that there are other ways you can serve. You can prepare desserts and serve them in:
Ramekins
Muffin Tins and Cupcake Liners (These tulip-style liners are super cute!)
Paper Cones in Cone Holders
Plastic Cups
Mini Mason Jars
Wood Skewers
Chinese Food Take Out Boxes
Shot Glasses
Plastic Martini Glasses
Salad Dressing Pipettes (This is the most popular item on this list & are purchased just about every day!!!)
All of these ideas fancy things up a little and add some variety! Consider having some of these items on hand when you’re preparing your appetizers.
