Valentine Skewers Coming Your Way

I’m always looking for cute treats for Valentine’s Day. And as much as I’d like to create and invent all kinds of amazing and adorable Valentine treats, it’s usually something simple and last minute that I’m going for. I’m definitely the queen of hacks – something that presents amazing, but it really stupid-easy.

My inspiration for this project was really these adorable skewers I found at Dollar Tree! That set my wheels in motions and today I’m sharing what I came up with – XOXO Valentine kabobs on a skewer made with mini Valentine X, O, and heart cookie cutters!

The idea behind these skewers are simple, mini X, O, and heart cookie cutters. I thought these would be perfect for little skewers.

Let’s take each of these ideas one at a time, but they are all pretty simple.

The only real trick to this is make sure whatever ingredients you’re using the cookie cutter on, it should be about 1/2-3/4″ thick, so the skewer has enough ‘meat’ to pierce through evenly.

Materials

Gold Heart Skewers (I got mine at Dollar Tree, which are 5.5″ but you can get these at Amazon -they are just a little shorter at 4.7″)

Mini Valentine Cookie Cutters (If you don’t have these, they can be a little hard to find – Mine were from the Wilton brand that I found few years ago! But Ebay has options!) Heart cookie cutter are pretty easy to find, but you can also use alphabet cookie cutters for the X and O!

Then, each kabob recipe has its own ingredients!

Caprese XO Kabobs Valentine Appetizer

Cherry tomato and mozzarella heart skewers with basil, perfect for Valentine’s Day appetizer. Easy to make, colorful, and a charming addition to romantic celebrations or parties.

I’m no stranger to a cute caprese appetizer. In the past, I’ve put a mozzarella ball, a cherry tomato and a basil leaf on a toothpick and serve in a mini shot glass.

I thought it would be fun to take a similar idea and make a Valentine kabob!

For this example, I used the X cookie cutter for the mozzarella and a cherry tomato for the ‘O’. Well, in the picture, it’s actually a grape tomato – I sent my husband and he said Kroger didn’t have cherry tomatoes.  But while a grape does the job, I think a cherry tomato would have communicated XOXO a little better.

I also made some where I used both the X and O cutter on mozzarella and just added the tomatoes in with that.

I also did a few with hearts, which were super cute, too!

Here are all of them plated together without the glaze.

And here they are plated with the balsamic vinegar glaze.

I think these are plate so nicely and look really impresssive! Fancy! lol.

Keep in mind that I used a block of mozzarella so I could control the thickness – just keep that in mind if you are buying pre-sliced mozzarella!

Watermelon XO Skewers for Healthy Valentine Treat

Watermelon Valentine skewers, healthy fruit snacks with heart and star shapes, perfect for Valentine's Day, kids' parties, and healthy treat ideas from A Hundred Affections.

I especially love this idea because it can offset all the sugar and processed treats going around this time of year!

These watermelon kabobs are great for a healthy option at a class party, Valentine’s get together or just some festive and yummy after school snacks for the kids

The only trick to this is how thick you slice them… I didn’t measure them but maybe 1/2″ to 3/4″. I used a smaller personal watermelon, but you can use any size, depending on how much you want to make.

Then, you just punch out the shapes in the watermelon. I found it easier to push them out from the back once sliced.

Then, you just poke through on the skewer and plate! I didn’t add any glaze to it, but you certainly could drizzle a yummy fruit sauce or chocolate sauce over it also!

XO Valentine Brownie Kabob Treats

This particular recipe is the only one that might be a little trickier, but still, it’s pretty easy.

I used a box of Trader Joe’s brownie mix, but you can use any mix you like.

Again, you want the thickness to be 1/2″ – 3/4″ thick. It’s going to be hard to push the cookie cutter through if they are too think, and the skewer might slip out the back if it’s too thin.

My box of brownie mix fit in an 8 x 8″ pan, and it didn’t rise too high. Just pay attention to the instructions on the back of your box.

After I baked the brownies, I cut them into 4 parts and then put the pan in the freezer to harden up. You might be able to just refrigerate them, I wanted to make sure they were really firm.

brownies cut in quarters

When I was ready to make my skewers, I took the brownies out about 1/2 – 1 hour before I was going to ice them so they could thaw just a little.

For the icing, you can use regular pink icing, but I just added a drop of red food coloring to cream cheese icing, and it worked out perfectly.

After the brownies thaw enough, I used a spatula to take out 1/4 of the brownie and put it on a paper plate. I iced it (make sure icing is room temperature) and then I drizzled Valentine sprinkles on them.

You can probably add the sprinkles at the end after the skewers are made and plated as well.

Then, I cut them with the cookie cutter. Be sure to push them out of the cutter from the back so it doesn’t mess up the icing.

And that’s really it!

  • 1 container pink icing (or white icing with red food coloring)
  • Valentine sprinkles
  • Heart skewers
  • X,O, heart mini cookie cutters

Instructions

  1. Prepare brownies as per box instructions. Be sure they end up being about 1/2" 3/4" thick.
  2. Cut brownies in to quarters and refrigerate or freeze. If freezing, take out of freezer about 1/2-1 hour prior to making kabobs to lightly thaw.
  3. Using a spatula, take out 1/4" of brownies and place on a paper plate. Ice brownies with room temperature icing.
  4. Add sprinkles on top of brownies
  5. Cut brownies in X,O, heart shapes with mini cookie cutters. Gently push shape out of cookie from the back, taking care not to smudge the icing.
  6. Poke X, O, hearts through the skewers. You can create in the following patters: XO, XO Heart, or 3 hearts.
  7. Plate and serve. You can also drizzle extra sprinkles over them for a little extra embellishment!
