DIY “Dad Is My Rock” Picture Frame (Easy Dollar Tree Father’s Day Craft!)
When my twin boys were little (they are 10 now!), I was always on the lookout for sweet and simple craft that wasn’t too messy and that my kids could actually help with.
I think today’s project checks those boxes! This is an inexpensive craft that uses just Dollar Tree supplies and comes together very quickly.
It’s great for a last-minute gift idea, too!
Materials for Rock Picture Frame
-
3.5″ x 5″ wooden picture frame (or any size of your choice).
-
Small rocks or pebbles (grab a bag from Dollar Tree – I just took some from my yard!)
-
Acrylic paint (any colors you love)
-
Letter stickers (for the “Dad is Our Rock” message)
-
Glossy Mod Podge
-
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
-
Foam brush or paintbrush
- Picture of Dad and kids to go in the frame
Instructions for Rock Picture Frame
1| Paint the frame.
First, remove the glass and backing before painting.
Then, paint the wooden frame whatever color you like. We kept it simple with a white because my letter stickers had some transparent parts to them, but you can totally let the kids pick their favorite “dad colors.”
Let it dry completely. A hair dryer can help speed up the process!
***The frame I used had a metal bracket at the bottom. I just unscrewed it and took it off, knowing the screw holes would be covered by stickers.
2| Add the text.
Use letter stickers to spell out “Dad is Our Rock” directly onto the frame. You can use ‘my rock’ if the gift is from just one child and ‘our rock’ if the gift is from siblings!
These were the stickers I was able to get directly from Dollar Tree, but feel free to use any letter stickers you like and that will fit on your frame!
The frame you use as well as the size of the letter stickers you have will somewhat determine the layout of the text.
I had to turn my frame to landscape orientation for all of the words to fit.
It’s a good idea to try to get an idea of the spacing of the letters and words and how they’ll fit on there before you stick them down, but it was actually pretty forgiving for mistakes.
I was able to pull up the stickers and reapply/reposition them as needed pretty easily.
Don’t worry if they lose some of their adhesive when you do this. Using Mod Podge in a later step will help seal them.
***If you don’t want to put Mod Podge on the rocks, reverse steps 3 & 4!
3| Glue on the rocks.
Once the paint is dry, use a hot glue gun (adults should help with this part) to glue the rocks on the frame.
Again, where you lay the text will also determine where you will lay the rocks.
For our frame, it worked best to have the text on top and bottom and the rocks running along the sides.
We needed a pretty good-sized dollop of glue for the rocks to stick.
Do your best to find the flattest part of the rock to put the glue on.
4| Seal it up.
Once everything is in place, brush a layer of glossy Mod Podge over the whole frame — rocks, stickers, and all.
It’ll dry clear and give it a nice, finished look that’ll help it last.
5| Let it dry.
Give it a few hours to dry completely before adding a favorite photo of Dad and the kids! I like to let mine dry overnight if I have the time.
And that’s it!
You’ve got a heartfelt, handmade Father’s Day gift that’s meaningful, affordable, and super fun for the kids to create.
Plus, it’s a sweet reminder to Dad that he’s their rock, which I’m sure will be a daily inspiration!
