Easy & Adorable Father’s Day Gift Idea

Father’s Day is just around the corner (how fast did that happen?!?), and if you’re like me, I’m always looking for simple, thoughtful gift ideas that my kids can actually make (and not just watch me do all the work 😅).

Not only that, I especially appreciate a gift that my husband can actually use – and I know he does also. It’s crazy how fast ‘things’ can accumulate, and I’ll all for a gift that falls in the ‘practical’ category.

Today, I’m sharing a Baseball-Themed Trinket Tray using just a few supplies — most of which you can grab for cheap at Dollar Tree. It’s quick, kid-friendly, and turns out SO cute!

***You can customize the paper to any theme or design that would suit the recipient (doesn’t have to be just Dad!). And if you like the baseball theme, you can gift it to any baseball lover!

I have a trinket tray that I made for myself a few years ago, and I keep it on my nightstand to put my jewelry, chap stick, cough drops, ear plugs, scrunchies, even my eye cover!

This super easy Dollar Tree craft is perfect for dads who just need a place to store a few things on their bedstand, on their desk at work for some handy essentials, or by the entry way to empty their pockets and toss their keys and loose change!

Materials for Trinket Tray

• Wood trinket tray (Dollar Tree has these – the one we used was 6.5″ x 4.5″ but there is also one a littler larger you can use as well.)

• Acrylic or chalk paint (we used black, but any color will work)

• Baseball-themed scrapbook paper (***We got the baseball paper at Hobby Lobby; Michael’s also has a great variety. You can also print out background wallpaper in various patterns and themes for free on Canva!)

• Glossy Mod Podge

• Foam brush or paintbrush

• Scissors

• Pencil

Instructions for Trinket Tray

1| Paint the tray.

First, let the kids pick a color and paint the tray, inside and outside. We didn’t paint the bottom, but you can if you’d like. We went with black because it’s my husband’s favorite color, but navy is another option that feels sporty and classic.

You can choose Dad’s favorite color, a color that matches the decor where the tray will live, or a color that matches the scrapbook paper!

It might need two coats, so just let it dry a bit between layers. We often use a hair dryer when we are tight on time!

2| Cut your scrapbook paper.

Lay the tray down on your baseball paper and lightly trace around it with a pencil. Cut just inside the lines so it fits neatly in the bottom of the tray.

Or, you can measure the inside of the tray with a tape measure, draw a rectangle of that size, and cut.

Be sure to check that the paper fits close to perfect before the next step! Trim as needed!

3| Mod Podge it in.

Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge onto the bottom inside of the tray.

Then gently press the scrapbook paper on top. Smooth out any bubbles carefully with your finger, dry paint brush or a credit card.

4| Seal it up!

Once the paper is stuck down, brush a generous layer of Mod Podge over the whole thing — paper, inside edges, everything. It’ll dry clear and give it that nice, glossy finish.

5| Let it dry.

Give it a few hours to fully dry and cure. (Overnight is even better if you can wait that long.)

And that’s it!

You’ve got the cutest little trinket tray that’s handmade, totally affordable, and perfect for a Father’s Day gift. Dad can toss his keys, watch, spare change — you name it — right into this handmade piece.

Plus, it’s something your kids will be super proud to give because they actually made it themselves! 💙

Bonus idea: Let the kids write a little Father’s Day note on the back of the tray with a paint pen before sealing it up. Personal touches really make this a special keepsake, above and beyond just a gift.

Free Printable Father’s Day Gift Tags

If you’d like the gift tags you see in the picture, just fill out the box below!

There is a page of each version: “All Star Dad | Happy Father’s Day” and Proverbs 20:7: “The righteous man walks in integrity; blessed are his children after him.”

The tags are 2″ round, which can be cut with a 2″ circle punch.

I also used a 2.5″ circle punch on red and blue construction paper and glued the tag on those to give them a little extra prominence.

These tags also coordinate with Avery 22612 round sticker labels, which you can also stick on larger circle punched cardstock or construction paper, or directly on the gift itself!

For best results, print on cardstock!
