Child’s Handprint Craft for Grandma

To be totally honest, I’d be lost if it were not for the Grandmas in my children’s lives. They are ‘Nanny’ and ‘Memaw’ – but all the same. They are amazing.

And when it comes to Mother’s Day, we mamas are on the task to make sure Grandma gets the recognition she deserves. And honestly, a treasured keepsake, especially one with your kids’ handprints, is probably all she wants. They usually have enough stuff, anyway!

When your kids are little, a craft is a fun way to create a handprint keepsake of these precious years, as well as gift it to these special ladies.

I created this particular printable to be used in a few ways, for pretty much all occasions. While this certainly can be in your arsenal of Mother’s Day crafts, nowhere is it mentioned on the sheet, so you can use it any time of the year!

This is also a super-cute school DIY homemade gift from the kids. It can be used in day care, preschool, kindergarten, or Sunday school!

It would also make a fabulous Grandparent’s Day gift!

How to Use This Handprint Free Printable

As you can see here, there is a faint yellow handprint on the printable, which represents Grandma’s hand.

Then, young kids can put their own handprint right on top of it, which exemplifies the sentiment: “Your hand will always be my favorite one to hold.”

This free PDF also comes with a blank version of this, in case you want to do this as a project WITH Grandma, which is a great way for her to bond with her grandchild!

Now what Grandma wouldn’t want that? It is a precious gift idea that she will cherish.

For this project you’ll need:

Printable Digital Files (fill out the box at the bottom of the post to get yours for free!), printed on white cardstock

Tempura or Washable Paint (I’d advise against acrylic paint or permanent marker) (This set has a brush built in for less mess!)

Paper Plate or Scrap Cardboard

Foam Paint Brush

Pen (optional)

8×10″ Frame (optional)

Rather than having your child stick his or her hand in a plate full of paint, it’s easier to paint the hand itself.

You can use paint an array of different colors for this project, but since it is printed in pastels, I recommend a complimentary pastel color (pink, light blue, mint green, etc.).

But really, anything you have tucked away in your craft closet will do!

Instructions for DIY Handprint Art

This is so easy, it hardly needs instructions, but just in case you need it spelled out for you (like I would!).

1| First, take the paint and squirt a little bit onto the paper plate.

2| Then, dip the foam brush in the paint and paint your child’s hand.

3| Finally, firmly, without any extra movement, place the child’s hand on top of the yellow handprint that is printed on the digital download.

Allow paint to dry and you’re all done!

There is a place at the bottom for the child’s name or to write a special message as well, if desired.

That’s it! You can give it to Grandma as is, or place it in a cute frame as a unique gift!

This PDF trims down to a 8×10″ size, so it will fit nicely in a frame of that size. It is a great keepsake of your child’s handprint that will warm her heart for a good long while to come.

Option for Grandma/Grandchild Craft

If this is a craft you’d like your child to do with Grandma, you’ll just need 2 different colors of paint as opposed to one.

Print page 2 of the PDF that has a blank center, with no handprint in the middle.

Follow the same instructions as above for Grandma’s hand, let it dry for a little while (a hair dryer can speed up the process), and then let your child do the same thing.

Doing it together is so much fun and is such a special memory between them.

The experience itself with be a extra special gift for Grandma.
