Easy Homemade Christmas Ornament
You know how it’s said that ‘Your eyes are bigger than your stomach”? Well, that’s true for me sometimes, but it’s always true for me when it comes to crafting.
Meaning, I see craft supplies in the store and grab them because, ‘Oh, that looks like a fun project!’ The second part of that statement that I never really acknowledge is ‘that I’ll probably never get to.”
Well, my craft room was starting to look like I was stockpiling for the Apocalypse. This year, I had to do something – anything – with some of those materials.
I had some clear plastic Christmas ornaments from Dollar Tree, and the wheels in my brain started turning…
And here we are: an upcycled sweater Christmas ornament.
Lucky for you (and me), they are cheap, easy to make, and look really pretty – pretty enough to sell.
Let’s get to it.

Instructions for DIY Sweater Ornament (Rustic Farmhouse Style!)
Here are some simple instructions for this project. The pictures show two different ornaments I made – that’s why you’ll see some photos with a cream sweater and some with a brown sweater.
Beneath the process photos, you’ll find succinct, printable instructions, if you need them!
Step by Step Instructions
First, you want to take your plate and place it on the sweater.
If the sweater you’re using has a lot of give and pull to it, you can use the 6″ plate. If it’s a little stiffer and doesn’t stretch that much, use the larger, 8″ plate.
Once you’ve determined the size plate you need, trace a circle around it with your Sharpie. Then, cut it out with a scissor.
Then, remove the top part of the plastic ornament.
In a ‘North, South, East, West’ pattern, glue the four ‘corners’ of the circle to the top of the ornament.
It’s better if you can get the sweater to tuck inside the ornament and glue it there. If there is too much fabric on the outside of the top, it might be hard to get the top of the ornament to fit over it.
Be sure to pull tightly as you glue, so there are no gaps. You want the sweater to fit tightly over the ornament.
Once your 4 ‘corners’ are glued, begin to gather the rest of the sweater and glue to the top/inside of the ornament, like you did at the start.
Continue until the entire ornament is covered and all of the sweater edges are glued to the top.
Place the metal ornament topper back onto the ornament.
Then, take embellishments of your choosing and glue them to the top of the ornament.
This might take a little playing with, some trial and error. Don’t be afraid to trim down greens or berries and glue them on in more individual pieces.
This way, you can get a more customized look.
Once it’s to your liking, add a ribbon or raffia to the top and hang! It can be used as home decor, on a tree – so many possibilities!
For succinct, printable instructions, see the card below!
1| Trace a plate for a circle shape onto a sweater with a Sharpie (6" plate if the sweater stretches a lot; 8" plate if the sweater is tight). 2| Cut out sweater circle. 3| Remove metal top of ornament and place ornament in the middle of the sweater circle. 3| Glue sweater to top of ornament in a 'North, South, East, West' pattern. Glue fabric inside the top of the ornament rather than outside, if possible. 4| Continue to glue other edges of the sweater to the top/inside of the ornament, pulling tightly as you glue, for a close fit. 5| Replace metal top to ornament. 6| Glue embellishments to the top of the ornament, trimming and arranging to your liking. 7| String ornament with ribbon or raffia and hang as desired!DIY Upcycled Sweater Christmas Ornament
