If you love farmhouse Valentine’s Day signs, you’re in the right place! Here are 8 printables you can download for free – 3×3″ (or 4×4 – your choice!) – perfect as mini-signs for tier trays or small places you want to add a little love!
Easy & Cheap Valentine’s Day Decor
I’m always on the hunt for a bargain, especially when it comes to home decor. As a SAHM, you train yourself to look for ways to save money – whether it’s snagging a deal, learning to DIY, or repurposing what you already have.
I was in Kroger’s on Christmas Eve, hoping to find some marked down Christmas and winter decor, and to be honest, there wasn’t a ton left.
Most of the shelves were empty and they were filling them up for Valentine’s Day!
As a blogger, I know you have to be months ahead of the rest of the world to be in front of the advertising curve, but it hit me all at once, the power of marketing.
As cute as all that Valentine’s Day decor was, I exercised self-control and passed on it, waiting until a more seasonably appropriate time {and when they marked it down!}.
Valentine’s Day Free Printables for Signs (and Mini-Signs)
A few weeks later, I allowed myself to start thinking about Valentine’s Day.
I didn’t really find much I liked, especially in the way of signs.
I knew I wanted to dress up some tier trays, and I just couldn’t find Valentine’s Day signs that were small enough to fit.
Well, necessity is the mother of invention, and I decided to make my own, which was easier and not easier than I thought (as usual).
When I’m designing free printables, for my inspiration, I usually look at what’s out in the stores – it’s a good way to tap into what’s trending.
Bumps in the Styling Road
I knew I wanted to do smaller versions of what I’d seen to put in tier trays, so I designed 8 different prints, in 4×4″, thinking, ‘I’ll just pick up some 4×4″ frames to throw them in. Easy!“
Well, after I made the designs, I realized that 4×4″ frames are not that easy to come by – and not that cheap, if you can find them, thereby eliminating my ‘cheap Valentine’s Day’ decor project.
Back to the drawing board.
Mini Canvas and Wood Plaques for the Win
I knew I needed to come at it from a different direction to come up with what I wanted for the printables.
It was going to be more of a DIY project than just framing a print.
But that’s fine. I sorta like it when my mind has to come up with creative solutions.
Thankfully, I found these wooden blocks at Hobby Lobby – 4×4″, 4 to a pack for $2.99! Total score!
Then, I was able to find these 4×4″ canvases at Walmart, just $1.49 a square.
I knew I could easily Mod Podge the signs to the front, which would make them totally usable.
However, I also liked the back of the canvas. I was thinking I could trim the printable and glue the sign on top of the back with a little wood sticking out, sort of a faux frame. No problem.
But then, I also liked how it might look inside the back of the canvas frame, sort of a recessed print.
But a 4×4″ print was too big, so it was off to the computer again.
The End Result of the Valentine’s Day Mini Free Printables
I made several versions of this, and here’s what I landed on:
The prints are framed out in a 3×3″ space, which means they can work in a 3×3″ frame or you can use them in a 4×4″ space, but with just a little more white space.
DIY Valentine’s Day Signs: How to Assemble
There are a few ways you can go about this. Number 1. is super simple. Numbers 2-3 are DIY projects, and for those, you’ll need Mod Podge and a foam paint brush, as well as one of the frame types described above.
You can either:
1| Put them in a 3×3″ or 4×4″ frame.
I found this frame at the Target Dollar Spot for $3. It had a different print in it – I just took it out and added mine.
2| You can use the wood blocks from Hobby Lobby or something similar.
For those, you can paint or stain ahead of time if you want – or just leave them natural.
To Assemble:
Trim the print to the size you want, apply Mod Podge to the wood and back of the print with a foam paintbrush. Let it dry and then apply another topcoat or 2 of Mod Podge.

3| You can use the Walmart canvases or something similar.
To Assemble:
There are a few ways to use the canvases:
Front of the Canvas:
Trim the signs to 4×4″, apply Mod Podge to the front of the canvas and back of the printable with a foam brush. Stick printable on wood and smooth out wrinkles. Let dry. Once dry, apply 1-2 top coats of Mod Podge to seal.
(The “Be Mine” Sign below is done this way.)
ON TOP of the Wood Frame on the Back of the Canvas
Trim down the printable a little smaller so the wood shows and creates a faux frame. If you want to paint the wood, do it before attaching printable.
Apply Mod Podge with a foam paintbrush to the outside wood frame on the back and place printable.
This is a little trickier, as there’s not as much surface area to stick to. Once you place the print, turn it over on something flat and put something heavy on it to help it stick. Be sure to smooth out any wrinkles first.
Once dry, apply 1-2 coats of Mod Podge to seal.
(The “Love You More sign below is done this way.)
INSIDE the Wood Frame on the Back of the Canvas
Trim the printable down to 3×3″ (or a little smaller), and place it inside the wood frame on the back of the canvas. You may need to trim a few times until it fits in neatly.
Apply Mod Podge with a foam paintbrush to the inside of the back of the canvas and on the back of your printable. Place printable inside the frame and smooth out wrinkles. You can use your finger or the back end of a paintbrush. Let dry. Once dry, apply 1-2 coats of Mod Podge to seal.
(The “XO Tic Tac Toe sign below is done this way, painted with Southern Pecan Chalk Paint.)
