Are you looking to lift up Jesus in your home this Easter? It can feel like a fight against culture, but He is worthy! Today I’m sharing a wreath I created with biblical symbols for a stylish but meaningful DIY Christian decor project for Easter. Cheap and easy, too!

The Quest for a Christ-Centered Decor for Easter

I don’t always share a lot of personal things on my blog, but this is something that has been on my heart recently. As a mom, a homemaker, a person who blogs about decorating and home decor, I really have felt God putting on my heart to create more content that glorifies Him.

There’s nothing wrong with neutral content or neutral decor in our home, but I believe it’s all HIS and all for HIM. 

I think that, as much as we can, we should lift up Christ and point others to Him when they enter our house. Directly, with words, and subtly, with actions. And even more subtly, through decor, too.

So as Easter is approaching, I really wanted to create something that lifted up Jesus on this holiday that is so special to Christians. His resurrection changed EVERYTHING, and certainly, honoring that should have a place in our home.

Resurrection Themed Easter DIY Wreath Symbols

As I was thinking about something I could create, I got this idea for an Easter wreath. I wanted something that matched my decor style and aesthetic, but also something that was meaningful.

Today I’m going to share what I came up with.

It’s a little more subtle, but it’s meaningful to me because the items used for this wreath are symbolic.

Here’s what I mean:

Olive Branch Greenery

For the greens, I wanted to use something that had a connection to the Easter story. I considered palm branches, tying into Palm Sunday, and I think that would have been pretty. 

But I ended up going with olive branches. Not only for aesthetics (though I think they are gorgeous!), but it recalls Jesus’ struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane, believed to be an olive grove (Mark 14:32-36).

Gethsemane is derived from an Aramaic word that means ‘oil press.’  This is symbolic of Jesus’ being crushed for the weight of sin and His agonizing struggle in prayer. This is one of the most weighty and heartbreaking scenes in the whole Bible.

Not only that, ‘Messiah’ means ‘anointed one.’

So, that is the reason for the olive branches.

Linen Ribbon

The ribbon I used is not exactly linen – linen ribbon felt a little stiff to me – but a soft, delicate cotton, reminiscent of linen.

I used this ribbon to connect back to Jesus’ body being wrapped in linen for burial (John 19:40), the same linens that were found folded up in the tomb after He was raised to life.

Anemone Flowers

Anemones are native flowers to Israel, and I personally love the neutral colors. John 19:41 tells us the tomb that Jesus was buried in was in a garden.

I have no idea if anemones were in that garden, but I liked the thought of picking a flower that could have possibly grown nearby His tomb.

Many also think that when Jesus refers to the ‘lilies of the field’ in His Sermon on the Mount (Luke 12:27-28), he is not referring to actual lilies but wildflowers, of which anemones would be one! (Check this out for more insight about anemones!)

Materials You Need to Make a Resurrection Themed DIY Easter Wreath

This is a fairly simple project with just a few materials and a few steps.

You just need a handful of items, and there’s some flexibility in what you choose.

Round Wreath Form

I repurposed a flat, wooden wreath I bought a year or 2 ago. I can’t remember if it was from Dollar Tree or Walmart.  But I liked the wreath form and just removed the florals.

This is a good option from Amazon if you can’t find a flat wood wreath to repurpose in the store.

You can use any wreath form that you can wrap ribbon around.

If you can’t find a wooden round one or you don’t want to use one like that, you can use a foam or wire wreath form (preferably not a super-skinny one, but one you can wrap the ribbon around).

I would also avoid a grapevine wreath form, where it will be a very rough surface to wrap in ribbon.

Olive Branch Greens

I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby for 40% off. You’ll need 2 -3 branches depending on how full you want your wreath and how big your wreath form is. Here are some from Amazon you can order as well!

Cotton/Linen Ribbon

I purchased mine at Joanns a few years ago (Sorry! I’m so sad it’s going out of business!) but any neutral, cream-colored soft, fabric type ribbon will look beautiful. This one from Amazon is gorgeous and perfect for this craft.

Anemone Flowers

I bought 3 single stems also at Hobby Lobby. You can also get them on Amazon. Again, how many you need will depend on the size of your wreath and how full you want it.

How to Make a Biblically Symbolic Easter Wreath, Step by Step

1| Remove existing florals

If you are repurposing a wreath like I did, remove the floral stems. I used a scissor to pull up the staples.

If not, move on to the next step!

2| Wrap wreath with ribbon

***Before wrapping in ribbon, think about how you are going to hang it. My wreath came with rope. If yours doesn’t and you want to hang it by a rope, add it before you start winding your ribbon (unless you don’t mind the rope going on top of the ribbon). 

Think about how it is going to look with the method you are going to use to hang it (wreath holder, command hook, nail, screw, etc.) before beginning.

Start by taking the end of your ribbon and hot-gluing it to the back of the wreath at the top.

Then gently and neatly wrap ribbon around the wreath until you work your way around and get back to the top. 

Once the wreath is completely wrapped, hot glue the end of the ribbon to the back of the wreath.

3| Cut olive branches and secure greens with floral tape

Take your branch and snip several long olive stems. Arrange 2 of them on your wreath so they go in opposite directions.

You can place your branches at the bottom, at the top, or in the bottom ‘corner’ (like mine) for a more asymmetrical look. Attach the branches by winding floral tape around them.

Once your branches are in place, add in more layers of branches until it reaches the thickness you desire. Attach each branch with more floral tape, at the same place you originally added them.

4| Glue on anemones

Before I glued on the flowers, I pulled them off the stems and then snipped the back so they would lay a little flatter.

I arranged them over the floral tape in a position that I liked, and then I hot-glued them to the spot.

5| Touch up arrangement with hot glue.

If you see any leaves that aren’t laying right or flowers that need to be a little more secure, use hot glue to glue the leaves or flower petals right to the wreath form.

6| Hang and enjoy!

Here’s the end results and I’m so happy with how it turned out! I love that there’s layers of texture in a soft, neutral aesthetic – but mostly, that it reminds me of Jesus every time I look at it.

And, it’s neutral in color and without any ‘traditional’ Easter decor like eggs or bunnies – so you can leave it up all spring and summer long!

Stylish, dainty, and meaningful (IMO, lol).
