Looking for some farmhouse inspiration for winter decor?  It’s not complicated to add rustic winter charm to your home once your Christmas decorations are packed away.  Come see how!

Cozy Farmhouse Winter Decor, Coming Your Way

I have this love/hate relationship with the end of the holiday season and heading into the depths of winter.  I hate leaving Christmas behind, knowing it’s a full year until we get to have all that fun again (and I hate winter, so there’s that).

Yet, by the time January comes, I’m worn out.  The mess in my house, the clutter in every room, the lack of organization – I’m aching inside to de-Christmas.  By January 1, I’m crawling out of my skin to get my house back to normal.

Then, yet again, it’s sad – because my house looks so boring and plain after being so festive and cheerful.  It’s never really made sense to me: we have spring, fall, and summer decor. Then we have Christmas decor.

But what about winter decor?  Why isn’t that more of a ‘thing’?

Farmhouse Winter Decorating Ideas: There IS Life After Christmas

Well, we can make it a thing! We don’t have to go back to just the usual decor.  With a few adaptations and key items, you can add some winter decor to your home that will make it feel cozy, warm, inviting – the perfect place to hibernate and ride it out until spring.

In perusing Pinterest for winter decor, I came across a few commonalities that really help create an inviting space for winter, and it’s really not that hard.

There is quite a lot of your Christmas decor that can transfer over to winter decor – and some are as easy as just dropping the red.

I’ve also included WINTER FARMHOUSE FREE PRINTABLES you can download now to give your winter decor an immediate boost!

The basic idea for rustic farmhouse winter decor is to create a cozy, calm, serene space and bring the elements of nature indoors.

You’ll notice that there’s a lot of overlap and a combination of these different details, which is great!  That’s what you want – all of your components working together for a unified theme!

Personally, I think rustic farmhouse decor is PERFECT for cozy winter decorating. If you need a little tutorial on rustic decor and how to put that together, you can look at this post. It’s an overview of rustic decor as well as how to incorporate that into mantels, which is perfect for winter!

If you want to see how I switched from Christmas to winter decor in my own home in farmhouse style, check out this post! I’ve gone through each area with before and after pictures, explaining I made the transition!

1| Add in Winter Whites

Snow isn’t just for Christmas decor – snow is for winter! You can keep some of your snowy decor to add in some white.  The brightness helps during the bleak winter months, and that winter white adds just the right amount of coziness, in spite of its brightness.

Here are a few ways you can add in Winter Whites:

2| Use Natural Elements

Unless you love skiing or the cold, chances are you are hibernating for a good part of the winter, unless absolutely necessary.  (No joke, I really consult the weather app when making plans to leave the house.  If it’s too cold, it’s a no-go).

I truly love the outdoors, but since I can’t go outside like I’d want to, I can bring some natural elements inside.  Here are a few ways you can add in some elements from nature:

3| Aim for a Clean and Simple Look

With Christmas decor, for some reason, we really can get away with displaying as much Christmas decor as we humanly can.  It’s Christmas everywhere, and there is hardly any scene or design that is considered overdone.

However, January is just the opposite.

Less is more. A clean, neat, streamlined look can bring that organized, calming feel to your home in the winter.

An easy way to have a decluttered look is by grouping like objects together as well as striving for balance and symmetry. See some examples of that below!

4| Use Soft and Neutral Colors

Bold and bright is perfect for Christmas – sparkles, shiny object, bright lights.  It adds to the energy and excitement.

But if you are like me after winter, you are aching for some relaxation, downtime and a good slow-down.  Neutral colors have a calming effect.

We sort of naturally slow down in the winter because of being confined indoors.  Those neutral colors can enhance your winter relaxation. Here are a few ways you can use neutral colors:

5| Add in Black & White

You might have used black and white or Buffalo Check for Christmas decor – but you can still use it for winter decor as well!

You’ll want to lose any red because red usually communicates Christmas – but the black and white is still perfect to use for winter!

Here are some ways you can incorporate black-and-white into your winter decor:

    1. But that’s a great start! The buffalo pillows really jump out and are super-noticeable – in a good way! Slowly I’m hoping my home will take on some of these looks! (I have twin boy toddlers, so…. it’s mayhem here most of the time! Maybe when they are a little older….maybe….lol)

  3. Love these ideas. I love the different tones of white. I love the big chunky blankets until it comes down to it, I always think my kids would get tangled in them and they would be unknotted in no time. 😉 I am so not a decorator but I love looking at this stuff and dreaming that I am. Connecting from Grace girls today.

    1. Thanks for coming by, Jaime! Aren’t these beautiful! I have twin toddlers so they all wouldn’t be practical in my house (BOYS!), but I’m hoping some day I can replicate some of those pictures just a LITTLE! 🙂 Thank you so much for popping over!

  4. I love this! I was just nodding and saying, “Mmm-hmm” through the first paragraphs. I love Christmas, I hate winter. I love the decor and celebrations and festivities, and then on January 1 it’s like, “Well, NOW, it’s cold and dreary. Have a good time.” I LOVE your suggestions for greenery, blankets, and lighting. I actually decided a few months ago that I need to have JANUARY DECOR. So this month I’m sort of exploring and picking and choosing just the right stuff. I want Januarys to look cozy. Great suggestions–thanks!

    1. Awesome, Jennifer! I’m sure you will survive winter a lot better surrounded by some prettiness (or maybe that’s just me! lol). I would love to see what you come up with! 🙂
