Looking to add a little Valentine’s Day bling, operative word being “little”? Valentine’s Day vignettes are the way to go – small areas of your home that you can decorate to create a festive atmosphere without taking over the entire house! You’ll learn how to create vignettes as well as get ideas of where to place them & creative pieces to include to keep things classy! Bonus points if you’re a fan of minimalism and/or farmhouse styles (modern, rustic, & boho)!
The Increasingly Popular Vignette
For the average mom in the weeds of motherhood, vignettes may not be in your vocabulary – or if it is, it’s probably not at the top of the priority list. I’ve lived that chaotic stage with littles in the home (twin boys), when you feel like you’re just overrun with baby gear, toys, and stuff. It can be heard to think about decorating your home in that atmosphere. But you know you need some semblance of… something pretty?
I think the perfect solution is a vignette – for busy SAHM, working moms, any woman who doesn’t have a ton of time to dedicate to decorating.
If you aren’t familiar with the term, a vignette is basically a grouping of decor in a small area. I love them because you can create as many or as few of them as you like. No need to decorate an entire room in a coordinating theme.
First, I’ll explain some of the important aspects of creating vignettes in general; then, I’ll show you how I put it to work in my own home for Valentine’s Day.
How & Where to Create a Vignette in Your Home
In the fall, I put together a post of all the specifics of creating a vignette. I won’t re-write the entire post (you can click the previous link if you’re interested!), but the basics are:
1| Start with an anchor, if possible (basket, tray, riser, stack of books, a bowl, placemat, runner, etc.).
2| Add a statement piece (sign, vase, etc.).
3|Layer and add in smaller items, keeping thing in groups of 3 or odd numbers. Stay balanced and coordinated in color and vibe.
I don’t follow these rules 100% of the time – and if you’re more of a minimalist, going beyond 3 pieces in a vignette might feel like too much. The idea is to aim for balance in size and item number versus perfect symmetry (unless you love that!). You’ll see several areas in my home where I break those rules, but my aim is always balance and a coordinated look.
As for where to create a vignette – the question is more, “Where can’t you create a vignette?” They can go basically anywhere in your home, as many or as few places as you want to.
As I go through my home today, I’ll show you where I put vignettes, to spark some ideas. But you do what works best for your lifestyle and home!
I’ll also give some thoughts as I go as to what to include in your Valentine’s Day vignette and other tips.
Spoiler alert: it does not need to be ‘just’ hearts and cute Valentine’s Day decor (2nd spoiler alert: I don’t really do cute, lol). You can add in a few Valentine’s Day pieces to complement your regular or seasonal (winter or spring) home decor.
At the end, I’ll include a full list supplies you may want to consider, in case it’s more helpful to have that in just one spot.
My Personal Valentine’s Day Vignettes Styling Principles
Let me share a few generalities to how I approached decorating for Valentine’s Day this year.
Simple and Uncomplicated
In the past, I kind of went a little crazy when I decorated for Valentine’s Day – chalk it up to new homeowner excitement. I’ve tried to scale things down over the years just to keep it less complicated. I tried my best to stick with a ‘less-is-more’ minimalist approach.
Classy > Cute
As I said before, I try really hard to stay away from cute and cliche type decoration. Totally fine if you love that – I just try to be true to what I love. So, you won’t find a lot of cute sayings or gnomes or over the top heart decor. I don’t think you can avoid hearts when decorating for Valentine’s Day, lol, but I try to keep it more on the rustic/vintage side of things or the modern farmhouse side.
I aimed for a classy, clean look. Not sure if I succeeded 100% – and honestly, it’s fine not to be 100% – but in general, that was the vibe I was going for.
More Spring than Winter
I tend to lean more toward spring than winter. You can easily go either way with Valentine’s Day – you can mix in your winter greens and whites with Valentine’s Day decor – and even with some bright pops of red. Or, you can go with more pink and floral decor that nods toward spring.
I don’t use any red in my decor – just soft pinks, lots of flowers, and some hearts. My decor definitely has a spring feel, and that’s intentional. I’m over winter by this point, and I just need a little more brightness and cheer by February to deal with the bleakness of winter..
I also have some areas where it’s more neutral colors – no pinks at all – where I just mix in a piece here or there with whatever decor that I have up (plants, greenery, vases, etc.). You do not need to have every piece be a Valentine’s Day or heart themed piece of decor. You can mix in a few here and there with what you already have.

Front Porch
In the past, I’ve done a lot of decorating on my porch for Valentine’s Day (you can see some of that here where I show cheap & easy ways to decorate for Valentine’s Day). Here’s my porch this year.
This year, I kept it simple with a flowery, pink-colored theme.
I added Valentine’s Day decor in the blank spaces (the wall and on the crates). I didn’t have (or want) a lot of Valentine’s Day decor to fill the space on the porch, so I just grabbed a neutral-colored Adirondack chair from the backyard that I’ve used on my summer porch and added some pink pillows.
(FYI: the flowered pillow is a DIY from a dishtowel! Just use your glue gun to attach the edges and stuff!)
The wreath on the wall is a rope heart DIY and the one on the door is a heart hoop wreath DIY.
Tabletops
Entryway
An entryway area with a table is a fun place to create a Valentine’s Day vignette – or on console table in your living room as well.
Here’s my simple version that is really more spring than Valentine’s Day, but the pink pulls it all together.
The riser is my anchor piece, and I just added coordinated greens to bottles I already had. The vase is from Dollar Tree just wrapped with scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby.
And, you’ll see those pink flowers all over my house. They are my favorite Walmart go-to for spring floral decor.
Pro-tip: Lamb’s ear and eucalyptus are fantastic greens to use with Valentine’s Day decor.
Below is another little area that is also by the entryway. It’s very simple, and I just followed the rule of 3 here.
Again, not overtly Valentine’s Day, but the pink keeps things moving in the right direction. Again, the little pillows in the white planter are made from the same dishtowel I used for the porch pillow.
The “Love Never Fails’ print is in my Etsy shop as well.

Cabinets or Buffets/Sideboards
Below is a cube cabinet that I have in my living room, and this year, I made a Valentine’s wall gallery on top.
I like this idea especially for a table or cabinet that leans against a wall, so that way, you don’t need to deal with the hassle of hanging up pictures. Just layer different pictures in different frames for an eclectic look. I generally don’t go with bright pinks for Valentine’s Day, but I made a rag garland a few years ago and it blended with several of the signs, so I just went with it.
The prints in this picture are either framed Valentine’s Day gift bags or printables (I have several prints in my Etsy shop!)
Coffee Table
Our coffee table gets a lot of use with my sons and their toys, so I really try to keep things simple here. Whatever decor I have is moved to the floor on the regular.
This year, I went with a more neutral flower palette (white, green, tan/ brown). The only ‘Valentine’ decor is the white hearts in the tobacco basket.
Those are just string-covered cardboard hearts and some leftover white Dollar Tree decor I had laying around.
After photographing, I added a thrown together runner – the fabric below it as my anchor is actually a Target Dollar spot apron on top of a white scarf.
Dining Table
I love a dreamy Valentine’s Day tablescape (you can read all the details of this tablescape here!). Of course, truth be told, the table doesn’t look like this all season long because this really is our only dining table – we don’t have a separate dining room for special occasions.
But I still love to decorate it and keep it up for as long as it will last with my boys.
I use a neutral runner that I keep out for much of the spring and summer, along with neutral placemats and white plates.
Again, I went more with spring floral than Valentine’s Day hearts – but the little accessories – the heart bowls, the heart gummies and marshmallow pops – are enough to bring that seasonal touch.

Shelves and Mantels
Shelving and Mantels is always a great place to create vignettes. I have a few areas in my home with shelves that I like to decorate.
These floating shelves are another area I love to decorate. This year, I created those 2 neutral layered heart signs from (mostly) repurposed Dollar Tree materials. I use the bottles and mason jars for decor throughout the year – I just added some boxwood greens along with my favorite – lamb’s ear and eucalyptus – and my favorite pink flowers.
I had set them up before I switched out the winter decor, so below you can see how they are styled with winter greens versus spring blooms.
In the picture below, you can see this shelf with the plumber pipe brackets, which is right above our TV entertainment center. I made the sign (another print from my shop that I had created on canvas) as a verse of the year, so I’ve committed to keeping that up through ever season! You can see that I stay with a more neutral and non-traditional Valentine’s Day color scheme here, but for me, it’s just enough.
The grey and white pieces – the XOXO and the heart – were craft pieces from Dollar Tree that I had painted.
In the picture below, you can see the areas below our TV, our entertainment center shelves.
I included some seasonal books – the stamped “Love is patient and kind’ which technically can be kept around after Valentine’s Day – along with scrapbook paper covered books as well – with a simple plant that fits in with the rest of the decor.
On the bottom shelf, I placed a heart bucket (originally pink, which I painted grey) with faux white roses and a cute XO votive set in a tray. The rest of the books are my usual decor – I didn’t see any need to remove them!
Below is my mantel for Valentine’s Day.
I usually keep a large poster size print displayed all year, swapped out through ever season. This one is neutral in color and statement but works perfectly to go on the ‘love’ theme (also in my Etsy shop). The ‘Love Extravagantly’ print is in my shop as well – and the buffalo check heart sign is a DIY I did as well. The rest of the decor – the lantern, the candlesticks, the greenery, the bead garland – are neutral decor I use often throughout the year.
Tiered Trays
I love tiered trays for vignettes because they can stand alone and be placed anywhere – on a coffee or console table, a dining table, a countertop, or a coffee bar. You don’t need to anchor it to anything else!
The one thing about tiered tray decorating (this post goes into more specifics about how to decorate a tier tray) is to keep it balanced – in color, in scale, in number.
I included some mini Valentine signs I made (you can grab for free! – this post also links up to some amazing Valentine’s Day tiered tray decor) with some lamb’s ear greenery and a few other pieces – the mini pillows (again!), candles, a heart mug, candy – any of that can work to put on a tiered tray, especially if you’re steering away from some of the cutesy looks.
Hookboards
Hookboards are another fun place to create a vignette. This is a 3 hook wood board in my living room – I kept things simple with a simple DIY and beaded garland.
Below is an old-school Pottery Barn pub mirror circa 2005, lol, but it’s one of my favorites to decorate.
You can see I didn’t go crazy with Valentine’s Day decor, but just accented a small bit to coordinate with my other decor. The heart ornament came from a beaded garland that I repurposed. The sign is scrapbook paper I made using the Sonnet 43, Elizabeth Barret Browning’s Sonnet 43 (“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways..”) in an upcycled Dollar Tree frame.
Items for Valentine’s Day Vignettes
As promised, if you want a list of things you can include in your vignettes, I’ve created that below. I always recommend shopping your own home first – to see what you can move around, use, repurpose, etc. You probably already have many transitional pieces. Then you just need a few specific Valentine’s Day/heart-themed pieces of decor. And don’t forget about DIY! (Here’s a post with 30+ Valentine’s Day DIY decor crafts, for more inspo!)
Candles (jars, votives, etc.)
Signs (Etsy also has great selections!)
Easy Valentine’s Day Vignette Ideas
I hope I sparked some of your creativity to what you can do in your own home for Valentine’s Day. A small vignette here or there is all you really need to add some festivity. And I personally think it’s such a nice break in between winter and spring – a perfect way to bring in some cheer during the bleak winter months that can feel so long!
