Valentine’s Day Door Decorations: Curb Appeal Stunner
I’m not sure if you’re like me at all, but I can’t go into a store, see something cute, and not think, “Oh, I can make that.”
Anyone else?
I was looking for some winter clearance sales a few weeks ago, and of course, the Valentine’s Day decor hit the shelves December 26th. I was strolling through Target and came across some Valentine’s Day heart wreaths. Of course, I thought, “I can make one of these.”
Well, the end result was not exactly like the one at Target but to be honest, I think I like my version better.
If you’d like to try a trendy DIY with (mostly Dollar Tree) materials, follow along.

Here’s what you’ll need for this project:
Wire heart wreath form (Dollar Tree)
White Nautical Rope, 6.8 feet (6 packages) (There is an 11′ version of this rope as well – it’s a little thinner. You can definitely use that but I’m not sure how many packages you’d need).
Flower embellishments
(I bought these from Hobby Lobby when they were 50% off. You can get something similar from Amazon here and here – which gives you a little more bang for the buck!)
Ribbon (2″ wide, about 30″ length)
Glue sticks and glue gun
Snips
Thumbtacks
Instructions
This isn’t a terribly difficult project, but it does require just a little bit of patience and focus. It’s not totally a mindless Netflix binge craft, but it is pretty easy.
1| Take your rope and glue an end to the backside of the center top point of the heart. Wrap it around and glue again so both sides of the rope are secured and glued together, as it may not stick too tightly to just the metal.
2| Continue to wrap the rope around the heart, adding glue to secure. For many rope projects, I don’t always glue as I go – I just wrap. With this one, you need to glue as you go because of the shape of the wreath.
3| As you go around the outside curve of the heart, you’ll want to make sure the rope gently staggers and slopes down, to hold the shape of the heart. You’ll need to manually place the rope where you want it and glue in place. If you just wrap and glue, you might compromise the shape of the heart.
As you get to the bottom point of the heart, you’ll have to bend and tightly glue, as wrapping it won’t necessarily produce the sharp point you want, and it may slide off the metal bottom point.
4| Continue to wrap and glue. As you run out of rope, glue the tip of the new length to the one that is on the heart already. Continue with the process.
The most difficult part is just making sure your rope is glue together in a way that maintains the shape of the heart. This may require a little tugging and pulling, but it’s nothing that is hard – you just need to keep an eye on it as you wrap. You can use this picture as a guide to see the angles that the rope takes as it winds around the heart form.
5| Rinse and repeat, until you get to the end of the heart. Use a snip to trim the final piece of rope and gently tuck it inside as you glue so the end isn’t visible. You can see in the picture below where I tucked in the end of the rope.
6| Take your flower embellishments (mine were actually paper flowers from Hobby Lobby, but you can use any kind of flower embellishment, like these from Amazon or even just faux flowers if you’d like) and glue to the side of the heart.
7| Cut a ribbon length about 30″ or so (you’ll want the wreath to hang down about 15″ – or assess how low you want to hang your wreath and double the ribbon length), and then wrap it through heart. Thumbtack to the top of the door.
You can hang the wreath either completely vertical or on a slant as a floating heart. You can see both versions below.
So easy, right? This is a sweet heart that looks amazing against a dark door or if you just want something that is stylish with a modern farmhouse flare.
If you want succinct step-by-step instructions, you can take a look below!
1. Take one end of rope and glue to back of heart wreath form, at the center point. 2. Wrap rope around over the top and glue to original piece, at the bottom of the center point. 3. Continue to wrap rope around heart and glue as you go along. Take care to manipulate rope to maintain the heart shape, guiding it as you go around. Glue generously to secure. 4. Be sure to stagger and slope down as you wrap rope around the outside edge of the heart. At the bottom of the heart, bend rope and glue to maintain pointed bottom. 5. Continue to wrap and glue. As you run out of rope, add a new piece and glue pieces end to end to create a continuous rope effect. 6. As you get to the end, cut your rope with a snip for the final section and tuck end in and glue so it's not visible. 7. With your glue gun, glue flower embellishments to one side of your heart, to your liking. 8. Cut a 30" piece of ribbon and pull through heart. Using thumbtacks, attach to the top of door. 9. Wreath can be hung vertically or on an angle for a floating heart effect.Dollar Tree Rope Heart-Shaped Valentine Wreath
