Do you need an easy, classy DIY Valentine’s Day door decoration? This farmhouse heart wreath is stunning against a dark front door & lovely in modern farmhouse style! And, it’s almost exclusively made from Dollar Tree materials – easy AND cheap!
Valentine Front Door Stunner
I’ve been on the bandwagon for a few years now with Valentine’s Day decorating, to varying degrees. Some years I went all out and challenged myself to see just how many Valentine’s Day DIYs I could make from Dollar Tree. Another year, I was just doing my best to decorate for Valentine’s Day all on a budget. Last year, I rolled neutral rustic Valentine’s Day decor into a seamless transition to spring.
This year, I’ve been having all the minimalist feels since Christmas, so that is where I’m heading with Valentine’s Day decorating as well. This minimalist heart DIY hoop wreath set the tones perfectly.
Valentine’s Day Door Decoration Improv
So I saw this picture on Pinterest that immediately became my inspiration pic. I had just painted my front door black, and immediately, I thought this would be a great option for Valentine’s Day.
I wasn’t intending to create a post on it – I really just wanted to follow someone else’s tutorial, but the picture on Pinterest was a dead end. No link provided (if you know the source, I’d love to give proper credit!)
Without much of a choice, I went to work to figure out how to create it on my own. Today, you’ll get my working notes on how I put this together, flubs and all.

As for materials, I purchased a few inexpensive items, but if you have a craft room stash, you may already have some of these laying around.
Metal Hoop Wreath Form
In the past, I’ve bought a set of hoop wreaths from Walmart. I couldn’t find it, so I ended up taking a Dollar Tree circle wreath form and snipping a single metal hoop from it. Below is the wreath form I bought (after I snipped it, lol. I forgot to take a picture first.).
Gilded Brass Spray Paint
If you can find the proper wreath form, you won’t need this. However, if you are improvising, this is the paint that I used to paint the Dollar Tree form.
Faux Greens
I used some I had laying around from other faux flowers I had used in the past. I never really knew why I was saving them, but they finally came to good use. You can use any greens you like.
10-12 White Hearts in varying sizes (wood or foam stickers)
These were wood stickers I bought from Dollar Tree and painted. You can also just buy white foam stickers and use them as well.
In retrospect, the lightweight wreath form combined with the weight from the wood stickers set things off balance a little bit, so foam stickers may work better?
White Craft Paint & Paint Brush (only if hearts aren’t white already)
Floral Wire
White Ribbon
Glue Sticks and Glue Gun
Snips
Instructions for DIY Heart Hoop Wreath
I’ll give the long-winded version tutorial here and a succinct one at the end, but here I’ll give you some of my mistakes and what I wish I’d done.
(If you have a brass-colored hoop wreath form already, you can skip to step 3. If you are upcycling a Dollar Tree wreath form, keep reading).
1| Take your snips and cut the largest outside circle free from the rest of the wreath form. Try to cut as close to the outside ring as possible. There will be some sharp points, so take extra care.
2| Spray paint the hoop with Gilded Brass spray paint – paint one side, let dry, then the other.
3| Before beginning, hang from a hook or nail and see where it naturally balances on the center. Either My wreath wasn’t balanced and I placed my decorations on the weightier side – OR – the decorations added too much weight and set it off balance. There’s a way to rig it, but just be aware of this. Foam stickers rather than wood stickers may fix this.
4| If you don’t have white heart foam stickers, paint your wood stickers white before assembling.
5| While stickers are drying, attach greens to side of hoop wreath form with floral wire in an arrangement that you like. You may want to test the balance throughout.
If your greens have a little hole in the middle of the stem, you can thread through there as well.
6|Once stickers are dry, attach to greens in desired locations with a dab of glue from glue gun. My advice would be not to peel the backing off of the foam stickers, but attach with glue, so you can just use a dab and not have to stick the entire heart to the green, which may give a flat look.
7| Reinforce leaves and hearts with glue as needed. Continue to check for balance.
8| Take ribbon – about 20″ of so – and tie around opposite side of wreath.
Here you can see the finished product:
To Hang Wreath
This is where the balance part may get tricky. If your wreath is perfectly balanced, you will have no trouble. You can use a ribbon through the top middle and tack it to the top of the door. You can hang the wreath form on a nail, wreath holder or hook. Any of those would work perfectly.
My wreath was off balance, but as luck would have it, the small sharp piece where I snipped it from the large wreath form was in the right spot so I could hang it on a nail or screw to keep it from sliding off balance. See the photo below.
This little piece wasn’t perfectly centered with the wreath, but once it was hanging on the door, you couldn’t really tell. It is actually hidden behind the top leaf, so you can’t even see how I hung it.
It also worked when I hung it over 2 hooks instead of just one, like you see below with that little sharp piece from the wreath form against the hook, to keep it from sliding.
Another fix might be hanging it over a picture hanger hook and hammering your wreath in tight so it doesn’t slide off balance. You also may be able to glue ribbon tightly to the center of the wreath form so it doesn’t slide off balance as well.
If you are lucky, you won’t need to do any of this but just hang as normal – but just in case, those are a few solutions that may work, depending on your original hoop wreath form.
