Fight the Cold by Adding Cozy Winter Decor
As the Christmas season ends and winter moves into full swing, it can be a little bit of a challenge to create a cozy space.
Once the Christmas decorations are packed away, your home can be left feeling kind of sparse and empty. Maybe even cold and uninviting, compared to Christmas.
Sometimes it seems counterintuitive to spend energy on winter decorations after the craziness of Christmas, but personally, I need a little warmth and coziness to carry me over until the spring.
So decorating for winter really has its place at this time of year.
Among the winter vignettes and displays, a mantel is and always will be one of my favorite spaces to decorate to create a winter look.
Add Warmth with Winter Mantel
Adding some winter-themed decor to a mantel can make the entire space feel warm and inviting, a feeling that moves into the rest of the room – from the living room and beyond.
There are lots of ways to decorate a cozy mantel, but one of the first things you’ll need to do is figure out is the vibe or feel you’re going for.
Some people prefer a more rustic farmhouse look, with signs, wooden candlesticks, candles, and natural elements like birch logs, greenery, and pinecones.
Others opt for a more modern approach, with minimalist decor and a neutral color scheme.
Others really like to capitalize on the snowy themes in whites, blues, and even grays mixed with metals.
There’s no need to define your style (I’ve given up on that!).
Whatever your style may be or whatever just catches your eye, there are plenty of fantastic winter mantel ideas to suit your taste and make your own home feel cozy and inviting.
Ideas for Creating a Wintery Look with Fireplace Mantel Decor
Regardless of any particular style, here are a few ideas to consider while creating a gorgeous fireplace area:
Incorporate DIY Winter Crafts
If you’re feeling crafty, DIY winter mantel decor is a great way to add a personal touch to your seasonal decor, even after you’ve put away the holiday decorations.
Create your own garland, winter wreaths, signs, and decor to add a unique touch to your mantel.
Use materials like felt, paper, or yarn to create a cozy and handmade feel.
I’m always a fan of a good DIY project no matter what season!
Keep the Green Christmas Decor
Yes, you can definitely reuse any of your pine or cedar garland for winter, too!
If you want to move away from too much of a Christmas feel, try mixing traditional garland with another type of green, such as eucalyptus or lamb’s ear. It’s great for adding texture, too!
You can also keep your pine and cedar stems in your vases as well! Winter is great for plenty of greenery!
Bring in Natural Materials
Bring the outdoors inside by using natural elements such as pine cones, branches, and faux or fresh greenery.
Mini trees that you used for Christmas can also work wonderfully on a Christmas mantel. Even bottlebrush trees can do the trick!
This will add a touch of nature to your mantel and create a cozy winter vibe. It also adds some organic life during a season that is known for hibernation!
Create Cozy through Lighting
Add some sparkle and warmth to your winter mantel by incorporating lights.
Use string lights (white Christmas lights work great!) or fairy lights across the top of the mantel or woven through faux garlands to keep the winter glow.
Taper candles, votive candles, and tea lights also add warmth and a soft glow you’ll love all season!
Accent with Vintage and Antique Finds
For a unique mantel, incorporate vintage treasures and antique finds such as old clocks, vintage mirrors, and antique candlesticks. This will add character and charm to your space.
Thrift stores are amazing for finding original pieces of decor!
Experiment with Bold Colors
Bold and bright isn’t just for summer!
Add a pop of color to your winter mantel by incorporating bold, strong color in the right places.
This can be something as bright vibrant blues or just adding contrast through blacks and whites for festive decor.
Try Elegant White and Silver Decor
For a sophisticated and elegant winter mantel, use white and silver decor. Use silver candlesticks and a white garland to create a chic and timeless look. It also adds a wonderfully icy and sparkly vibe!
Embrace Minimalism
A minimalist look is very appealing after a hectic holiday season!
For a simple and clean winter mantel, use simple white candles, a few greenery sprigs, and a simple garland to create a sleek and clean look. Neutral colors also work well for a minimalist or modern farmhouse-style mantel.
Add Cozy Knits and Blankets
Add some texture and warmth to your mantel by incorporating cozy knits and blankets. Use chunky knit throws and fuzzy pillows, tucked with a cozy winter scarf, to create a warm and inviting look.
Obviously, these would go down in a basket or crate below on your hearth or nearby by on a couch. But they are a must-have in my opinion, for a cozy living room or den!
Use What You Have
You don’t need to buy new decor for winter! Lots of Christmas decorations can work (trees, lights, garlands, stems) as long as you pull out the red and anything else that shouts ‘Christmas!’
Try to repurpose what you have and don’t be afraid to try new things. Remove red berries from a wreath. Fill a dough bowl with pine cones instead of ornaments. Switch red candles in your candleholders for white, green, or black – even gold!
A lot of times, you can keep the base of your decorations and just make a few seasonal adjustments.
30 Creative& Cozy Winter Mantel Display Ideas
Now, let’s take a look at some of the best ideas and inspiration for a spectacular winter fireplace mantel!
Sometimes winter can feel a little cold and stark. For this mantel, I wanted to create a lush mantel to add life and vibrance. I paired a few different faux greenery garland and grass planter with some neutral decor and a statement piece with a Robert Frost winter literary quote. This mantel is a seamless transition from Christmas to winter! Because the ornaments are in an unexpected teal color and not your traditional red, it's perfect for a frosty themed winter mantel. And this DIY backdrop used canvases and plaid fabric is a genius and original focal point! This looks so beautiful! Very simple in the choice of decorations, but this works together absolutely seamlessly! Using real and faux greens with a very simple color palette... this is a mantel you'd love staring at all day! If you love vintage French country, you'll love every detail! I especially love that look of the layered mirror with gorgeous hanging garland. Just a touch of traditional winter decor - some greenery and a few pine cones, but it is just perfect to carry you through the winter months. Brass candlesticks, brass bells, gold frames... it's simple and elegant and works amazingly well for both Christmas AND winter. To create a cozy winter mantel, all you really need is candles! You can keep it simple and focused with just one kind of decor, and the result is stunning! I love the splash of brightness with the white flowers on the coffee table! The wood windowpane works perfectly against the white background, and the black and white signs tie in perfectly with the fireplace box. The evergreen trees bring just the right organic touch to the scene! This mantel has all the gorgeous elements of rustic farmhouse charm! Look at the antique mirror, pine cone garland, the cloches with sheet music, the wood trees .... it's all styled so perfectly for a classy rustic look. This is vintage Liz Marie in my opinion! If you love the earthy rustic winter feel, this mantel has a nostalgic mix of antiques along with a very rustic vibe. If you love the simplicity of wood and woven accents along with muted pines, this mantel is your inspiration. Charming and cozy! A winter sign can be the perfect centerpiece for a mantel! This is one of my favorite winter quotes, and it's balanced perfectly with the neutral candlesticks on one side and the trees on the other. If your decor style leans towards minimalism (and mine does after Christmas), this is a great example of a simple color scheme with pops of bold black. It also works nicely if you have a TV above your mantel as well. Many people associate dried oranges with Christmas, but as you can see, it works wonderfully for a simple winter mantel, paired with warm and earthy neutral decor. It's an expected burst of life in the dead of winter without screaming spring or summer. Winter whites are amazing for winter decor because it adds the brightness we all need during the cold, winter hibernation months. It's a beautiful contrast to the wood and black, which add warmth and keep it from feeling too cold. I love a mantel where there are very few details but you can see how each detail was so carefully chosen. Branches, candles and a burst of color from a eucalyptus garland. So classy and refined for a gorgeous winter feel. I love the simplicity of the color palette of this mantel. It's such a smart idea to use the color scheme that's in your home rather than fight it! The warm toned rock background works perfectly with the birch longs, chippy windowpanes and the contrast of the white decor accents. So cozy! I love the idea of using lighter green like the frosted lamb's ear garland for a mantel. Mixed with a cute pom-pom garland below and a pine cone garland above, the combination of all three garlands adds contrast as well as coziness! Adding pine cones to some winter greenery is really all you need for a simple winter mantel! Mix in a few snowflakes and it's more than enough to carry you through winter until you break out the spring decor! Did you notice that there isn't thing winter-specific to this mantel? And at the same time, it works perfectly as a winter mantel? The black, white, and wood are doing the heavy lifting as a neutral base, which gives the complete winter vibe! The flocked tree next to it signals it's winter in a classy, subtle way. If you've been around my blog of any amount of time, you know I think using free printables is a great idea! These black and white snow themed designs are perfect for a winter mantel, and they tie in perfectly with the lights, greenery, and pine cones!
