A Patriotic Mantel to Celebrate America

I’ve never really done a lot of decorating for Memorial Day and 4th of July. This year, I decided to decorate our mantel (and our porch!), partly because my husband is incredibly patriotic and truly appreciates when our home reflects that.

But more than that, we both genuinely love America—what it stands for, the freedom we enjoy, and the sacrifices that have made it all possible. Both of our grandparents served in the military, and we believe that celebrating America honors our family heritage as well.

And while I like to keep things simple and tasteful with a modern twist, I also have a soft spot for vintage and primitive Americana touches that highlight our love for our country.

This patriotic mantel is a reflection of all of that.

What I Included on My Patriotic Mantel

1| DIY Bandana American Flag Art

At the heart of the mantel, taking center stage is this easy and rustic DIY bandana flag.  I made this piece of decor with red, white, and blue bandanas. It’s framed and leans casually against the mirror as a focal point and statement piece. (You can see the full tutorial here.)

2| Upcycled Vintage Pitcher with Blue & White Hydrangeas + American Flag

Opposite the framed flag is a thrifted pitcher, filled with soft faux blue and white hydrangeas.

I upcycled this pitcher using the baking soda paint method for a textured touch. Then I tucked a small American flag in the hydrangeas to add a patriotic touch without overpowering the arrangement.

It’s a simple nod to Americana that blends beautifully with the rest of the space.

3| Decoupaged Patriotic Candle

This such an easy DIY!  Here, I used patriotic napkin to decoupage a simple white candle. The hydrangeas on the napkin tie in perfectly with the florals in the pitcher, creating visual harmony across the mantel.

I love that you can customize a craft like this with any napkin that suits your style and decor.

4| Patriotic Mason Jar Vases

Two mason jars help round out the display on each end:

  • One has red and white stripes
  • The other is blue with white stars

You can easily DIY and spray paint these mason jars, but because of my schedule, I purchased them at Hobby Lobby.

Each is filled with faux white hydrangeas to keep the color palette cohesive. These jars add just the right pop of color while staying true to the vintage, handmade feel.

5| Center Bunting with Blue & White Striped Bows

Centered on the mantel is a single patriotic bunting, with blue and white striped ribbon bows on each end.

I originally thought I wanted a bunting to cover the entire mantel, but the size I purchased would have been too big.

However, I actually prefer the single bunting in the middle. It’s not overpowering and it but brings the whole look together. The bows on the corners add a sweet, cottage-style detail.

And here’s the whole look together!

Americana Mantel for a Festive Space

This patriotic mantel blends a mix of modern and vintage Americana for a nostalgic, yet updated look.

With just a few intentional pieces, you can create a space that feels inviting and festive for the 4th of July—without it feeling cluttered or overdone.
