A Red, White, and Blue Foundation

When we were redoing our deck and picking out some new furniture (to add to our old furniture), I wasn’t quite sure what look I was going for.

In general, I love neutrals because of their elegant, elevated looks.

But for some reason, when it comes to summer, I need color. It’s such a bright, cheerful time of year – it just seems like a shame to not incorporate vibrant colors.

And without intentionally doing it, I ended up with a color scheme that was predominantly red and blue.

And that just inspired me to go all the way with a patriotic decor theme.

Our (Accidental) Patriot Back Deck Color Palette

Before we started any decorating, we already had a 4-top table with red chairs and a red umbrella.

To go under our gazebo, we ended up getting a blue sectional with bold red throw pillows.

I added a blue rug to really brighten the space that is covered in shade along with extra Adirondack chairs and a fire pit table to keep things cozy on a cool night.

To add a little more festivity to the space, I hung these patriotic pinwheels that I had purchased! They’ll stay dry under gazebo – and they’d also work great hanging under an umbrella if you don’t have a permanent covered space.

Next to the gazebo, a six-top wooden table anchors the space, sitting atop a neutral grey rug to tie in with the sectional and a solar-lit blue umbrella for shade.

Patriotic Tablescape Details

Our dining area already had a patriotic foundational element blue umbrella.

(We bought the table and rug last summer, kept them out through peak of heat and all through the winter and they have held up amazingly.)

I kept the tablescape pretty simple, with just a few pieces of decor and some 4th of July treats.

I added 2 patriotic mason jar vases – one that is blue with white stars and the other that has red and white stripes.

I added white hydrangeas in each of them. These simple pieces added such a crisp, fresh feel to the tables and tied in beautifully with the rest of the deck.

Then, I just added a few pieces of festive decor -a red and blue star shaped placemat, each under white candy dishes shaped like stars. Each dish held a mix of red, white, and blue M&Ms for a sweet pop of color and flavor.

Then, I placed a white round platter with red and blue star designs on one side of the table.

On top, I displayed cupcakes with free printable toppers that read:

  • God Bless America
  • Let Freedom Ring
  • Home of the Brave
  • Happy Birthday, America

On the other side of the table, I had a blue gingham tray that held American flag plates and napkins along with 4th of July cookies.

It’s simple with plenty of room for seating and dining, but the bright colors add just the right touch of festivity.

Florals and Patriotic DIYs

I also added planters throughout the space with red geraniums and a mix of white and red vincas.

These colors automatically tie in with the patriotic theme with zero extra effort.

My favorite detail? The DIY patriotic flower pots with our DIY rocks!

With a little paint and creativity, these added just the right homemade charm to our deck.

We also added in American flags for an extra patriotic touch.

Relaxing Extra Seating

To make sure everyone had a comfy spot, I added extra blue and grey plastic Adirondack chairs around the deck. These are perfect for lounging and chatting.

I have the blue ones facing the mountain view, and it’s such a serene, peaceful spot to hang out after eating.

How to Create a Similar Look Simply and Cheaply

If you’re looking to decorate your own outdoor area, whether it’s a patio or back deck, for Memorial Day and 4th of July, you really just need a few simple accents.

You don’t need all new furniture in red, white, and blue. A few easy touches can create the festive look you’re going for:

  • Red, white and blue throw pillows
  • Planters with red and white flowers
  • Patriotic tableware and table decor
  • Hanging pinwheels from gazebos or umbrellas
  • American flags in planters or in vases with flowers
  • DIY patriotic flower pots and painted rocks.

If you’re planning a big get-together or just a quiet day with your family (that’s pretty much our speed, lol), I hope it will be fun and festive time not only to enjoy time with family and friends but to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

God has so blessed our country, and a huge amount of gratitude rises in my heart when I consider this.

I hope this peek into our patriotic setup inspires you to create your own cozy and meaningful space this Independence Day!

A few tips:

1| For best results, download on a PC rather than a mobile device.

2| Print on cardstock and use a 2″ circle punch.

3| For extra flair, use a 2.5″ circle punch with red and blue construction paper and attach topper with a glue stick.

4| Tape toothpick to the back of topper.
