A Most Thoughtful Gift Idea That Keeps on Giving
My journey to wellness has been anything but a straight upward line. But seriously, does reaching our goals ever go that way?
As I’ve had kids, I’ve realized more and more how important my health is. I was an older mom (41) when I had my twin boys, and it’s a glaring reality that I’m a lot older than most moms of my sons’ peers. And to that end, I’ve realized that if I want to keep up – with my sons and the moms, health is a really big deal.
I’m always looking for ways to live out my values, and when I was thinking about gifts this Christmas, my mind instantly went to health and wellness. What a great way to give a thoughtful gift that will give many dividends in returns?
Today, I want to share some ideas for a wellness gift basket that you can give a friend, family member, someone who might need a ‘get well soon’ boost. All of these items included would be a perfect gift this holiday season (or any time of year).
A Healthy-Themed Gift Basket by Many Names
As I was thinking about a healthy gift basket of this type, there are many ways you can ‘lean’ when creating this kind of basket.
You might be thinking of a ‘Health’ Basket – which may have more of an emphasis on the body and physical health, with more of a fitness theme.
You might be thinking of a ‘Wellness Basket’ – which may be more holistic to include the body, soul, and spirit and mental health.
You might be thinking of a ‘Spa Gift Basket’ – which may lean more toward pampering and relaxation.
You might be thinking of a ‘Self-Care Basket’ – which may be more specific to the recipients and what they would like or need to take care of themselves.
It doesn’t really matter what you call it. The idea is that you are filling your basket with items that would support the overall health and wellness of a person.
You absolutely can mix and match. And obviously, you want to think about who will be receiving it.
To that end, let me offer some gift ideas of what could go in each kind of basket. Since the emphasis is on health and wellness, you want to do your best to choose organic items or products made with natural ingredients, so they can take good care of themselves!
What Do You Put in a Health and Wellness Basket?

I’ve broken the lists down as the same as the above categories. Again, no rules so feel free to mix and match – but this gives you a general idea!
Health and Fitness Themed Basket
For a basket of this type, you can include these or similar items:
Shiatsu Neck and Back Massager
Wellness Gift Basket Ideas
If you’re wondering what you should put in a wellness gift basket, you can include these wellness gifts:
Essential Oils
Gourmet Teas and Coffees (with a pretty mug!)
A Good Book (Beach reads are great for this!)
Gift Certificate
DIY Spa Baskets
As a spa gift basket has the idea of pampering, you can include some of the following items (even better if you can include your own homemade beauty products!).
Massage/Spa Gift Certificate
Self-Care Gift Set
For a Self Care gift basket ideas, you can mix and match any of the items above, focusing on what your best friend or family member might need. It can be gifted as a birthday gift, or maybe when someone is going through a tough time.
It’s even great to gift if you know your friend just needs a little encouragement. A special care package would be just the thing – something of a customized self-care kit.
How to Put Together a Gift Basket
If you need a few tips on how to put together the basket itself, below you can read about the method I follow.
1| CONTAINER
Even though this is a gift ‘basket’- you don’t have to just use a basket! You can use crates, buckets, tins, trays, or even something useful that’s part of the gift – such as a cute tote bag. For the gift I created below, I used a DIY basket that I made myself! DIY containers are always a great idea and are a good idea to show a little love!
Think about what you’re putting in the basket with and let that help you decide the type and size of your container. Thrift stores or yard sales are great places to find some more unique choices!

2| FILLER
It might feel overwhelming to fill the basket from top to bottom with gifts, but that’s not a necessity. You can use some shredded confetti, crunched newspaper, tissue paper, or any kind of fill to cover the bottom section of the basket. Then, place your gifts on top, similar to how you might put together an Easter basket.
If you are including a robe or a blanket or something bulky, you can layer the other items on top of that. That will help ‘take up space’ in the basket, so you aren’t just putting in little things just to fill it up.
Example of a DIY Health and Wellness Basket
I figured the best way to demonstrate was to create my own gift to give!
First, I used my own basket that I created myself – I love the idea of DIY gift baskets. This is an easy project I made with Dollar Tree materials!
Though the categories I listed above aren’t hard and fast and there are no rules to this, I would probably say mine would be a Wellness Gift Basket – which would include physical, mental, and spiritual health – wellness for the entire body.
I included:
Cozy Blanket
I honestly think a cozy sherpa blanket is a great option for any basket. A person can never have enough blankets, and they make the best gifts and never go to waste.
Acupressure Pillow
I love, love, love this pillow. It’s a great way to get some added relief from neck, back, and headaches. I love that something this useful is small enough to fit inside a gift basket! You can even level up and give an acupressure pillow and mat set!
Fuzzy Slippers
Cozy slippers are instant relaxation. I particularly like Dearfoams, which usually have a rubber sole -perfect for a quick run to the mailbox! And usually, they are sized small, medium, large, so you will likely land on the sweet spot!
White Tea Face Wipes
I lovethese face towelettes because they are so refreshing for a quick pick-me-up (and if you happen to be lazy about washing your face at night! Anyone else but me?!?)
Head Massager | Back Scratcher
These are quick ways to decompress and are an easy way to provide instant relaxation! Watch out, though – my kids love the head massager and back scratcher and try to steal them all the time!
Diffuser and Essential Oils
I’m a big fan of using essential oils around the house. Not only do they promote wellness, but they smell amazing. Plant Therapy are my go-to oils for high quality and an amazing value at a low price, and I like to include a mix of seasonal blends for the house as well as ones that are particularly for wellness, such as peppermint, tea tree, lemon, and lavender!
Soy Candle
Sometimes, I just love the ambience of a candle. For that, I love soy candles made with essential oils, to be rid of the toxins. It’s extra fun to include a seasonal one if it’s a holiday gift basket. (This got buried in the basket and isn’t shown in the picture of the completed basket!).
soy candles made with essential oils
These are a great alternative to plastic water bottles and are a great thing to include in any gift basket. Tumblers with handles are trending these days as well and are a great gift idea! Theone pictured is a 40 oz., which I love – and cheaper than some other ‘famous’ name brand ones!
Stainless Steel Wine Tumbler
This is a great idea if your friend is a wine drinker. I don’t drink wine much, but I use mine for coffee and tea! It keeps it hot for hours and it feels a little fancy to drink coffee or tea out of one of these!
Trail Mix
I love adding a healthy treat to snack on in a gift basket. While it’s not a full-on food basket, I love the idea of putting in trail mix, and it’s an inexpensive, easy gift to include.
Tea
I typically lean toward coffee, but there is something so relaxing about a cup of tea! Even if your person isn’t a tea drinker, there are many soothing options! This hot cinnamon tea is a favorite as well. As I said, I’m not a tea drinker but I absolutely love this one! I got mine from Kroger, if you have one nearby, but you can also grab this caffeine-free version from Amazon!
Budget-Friendly Gift Basket Ideas
I know it can be overwhelming to think about filling a basket with all kinds of goodies. It can definitely add up! Here are a few tips for how I do it:
1| Consider homemade items
There is something so special about a handmade gift! This can be food or body scrubs or pillows… Think through the list and see if there is anything you can make yourself.
2| TJ Maxx and Marshalls
Both of these stores are wonderful for carrying health and wellness items for a discount! I use the Yuka app, which actually will give a score to tell me if the item actually is as good as the label says! I highly recommend using this, especially for health and wellness gifts. It’s a free app!
3| Walmart and Five Below
Walmart and Five Below have upped their game on many wellness themed items! And for more neutral items like blankets and yoga mats and socks, etc. Those would be great places also to shop for health items.
4| Clearance
So many stores like Target have amazing items on clearance. I love to keep a small inventory in my house for gifts. Our Kroger even has a great selection, too – be sure to check out clearance aisles wherever you shop!
DIY Healthy Gift Basket Ideas for the Win
There really are endless idea, and at the end of the day, a unique gift where you put in so much thought will be so appreciated. Regardless of if it’s a special occasion or a time of the year where it’s expected, so many different items that you put such care and thought into will mean so much. The love you put into it will be the best part, hands down. These health, wellness, and self-care ideas are sure to be not only a creative gift but an incredibly useful one, too.
As always- a personal touch that shows your own personality as well as the preferences of the recipient is part of the whole fun of a basket like this!

Beyond the tangible beauty of the gift, what truly touched me was the sentiment it carries. It’s evident that you took the time to select something meaningful, something that resonates with who I am. This gift feels like a reflection of our connection, a tangible expression of the thoughtfulness that characterizes our relationship.
