Sharing is caring!

Are you looking for Sunday swap ideas that are easy to make in batches and fun to take home? Here are 50+ homemade gift ideas, from jam and focaccia to simmer pot kits, sugar scrubs, and embroidered bookmarks, so you can show up with something people will love.

Not Your Mom’s Cookie Exchange

If you’ve ever participated in a cookie exchange over the Christmas holiday, this idea will not be new to you. With a cookie exchange, every person brings a half dozen or dozen cookies for each person attending and everyone walks out with dozens of different cookies to take home.

Well, a Sunday Swap is like that but on steroids. And, in my opinion, wayyyy better.

The first time I saw this on Instagram (I think it was called a Market Sunday, a Market Swap, or a Maker’s Market), I knew this needed to be something on my to-do list.

Since then, I’ve collected every Sunday swap idea I could find.

If you’ve been wondering what to make for a Sunday swap, this list is for you.

What Is a Sunday Swap? (And How It Works)

A Sunday Swap is the same idea as a cookie exchange.

Think of it like a little farmer’s market where nobody pays. Each guest makes one homemade item in a batch of 6 to 10 (depending on how many are attending – enough to share with everyone), sets it out on a shared market-style table, and then takes home the same number of items they brought. You walk in with ten jars of jam and walk out with a basket full of candles, cookies, seed packets, bath salts, and all kinds of homemade goodness.

If you’ve been wondering how to do a Sunday swap, it’s simpler than it sounds. You only have to make one thing, but you go home with a dozen.

Here’s how a Sunday swap usually works:

  • Pick your number. The host sets a batch size based on how many people are coming, usually 6 to 10 items. Make one for every guest, plus one or two extra for anyone who forgets.
  • Choose one thing and make it well. A simple homemade item is better than a complicated one. Choose something you’re good instead of a stressful new project. If you have a ‘signature’ homemade item, choose that!
  • Set up a market-style table. Each person gets a spot to display their items, with a small sign saying what it is and who made it. This is the fun part, so don’t skip the little details. Take the time to make your area pretty!
  • Take turns shopping. Go around the circle with each person choosing one item at a time until everyone has taken home the same number they brought. Remind guests to bring a basket or tote bag for all of their goodies to take home!

A Few Practical Tips:

  • Take time for pretty packaging. Mason jars, parchment and twine, cellophane bags, and kraft boxes all make a swap item look finished with very little effort.
  • Label everything. Add the name of the item, any instructions (like “simmer on low” or “keep refrigerated”), and a use-by date for food.
  • Add dietary notes. List ingredients on food items and flag common allergens like nuts, dairy, gluten, and eggs. A small “GF” or “DF” on the tag helps friends with food sensitivities.
  • Bring a cooler for perishables. Dips, curds, and freezer jams need to stay cold, so put them in a cooler until it’s time to set up.
  • Think about shelf life. Items that last a few weeks – like candles, spice blends, or bath salts – give your friends time to enjoy them without pressure.
  • Have a theme if you want one. Fall, Christmas, “gifts from the garden,” and “self-care” all make the planning easier and the table prettier. It can also help friend narrow down their choice of what to make.

Out-of-the-Box Ideas When You Don’t Know What to Make

Stuck on what to bring? The best advice is to create something you’re naturally good at. I don’t advise choosing something that would be a brand new endeavor (unless you like a challenge!).

If you still feel stuck, here are a few fresh directions to get you started:

  • Skip the kitchen. Not everyone wants to show up with baked goods, and that’s completely fine. Every idea in the home, garden, self-care, and handmade sections below is a non-food swap idea, and those often last longer.
  • Bring a GFDF treat. If you eat gluten-free or dairy-free, you’ll have something to enjoy, and anyone else with food sensitivities gets a safe option too.
  • Put it in a jar. Jam, lemon curd, infused honey, cookie mix, bath salts, and sugar scrub all look gift-ready in a mason jar with a tag and a bit of twine.
  • Make it a Christmas gift swap. Everyone goes home with a basket of finished gifts for teachers, neighbors, and coworkers.
  • Match it to your group. Swaps are a natural fit for a women’s ministry night, Bible study, or church fellowship gathering, so choose something that suits the people you’ll be sharing with.

And the good news is that you’ll find almost every idea in the list below! Perfect if you don’t feel ‘crafty’ enough to come up with something of your own.
