Easy Valentine’s Day Table Decorating Ideas

A Pretty Valentine Table is What I Need After a Cold Winter

Can we talk about how much I need a pretty Valentine’s table this time of the year? Right now, as I type, we just got snow here in Tennessee and my sons are playing out in temps that are in the teens. And I’m over winter.
But, from the warm indoors, at least I can look at my table and see the cheerful, light and airy Valentine decorations – and that makes winter a little better.
The best part is that I didn’t spend a fortune or hours of my life on something that’ll be up for a few weeks max.
This super simple Valentine’s Day centerpiece and tablescape was easy and cheap to put together- and true be told, a lot of the supplies came from Dollar Tree and things I already had lying around.
Let me show you how I put this whole thing together!
The DIY Valentine Centerpiece: Dollar Tree Magic
Okay, so the star of my Valentine table is this tiered apothecary jar centerpiece. Here’s what makes it so perfect: it’s easy to make, costs almost nothing, and looks a little fancy.
What I Used for the Centerpiece
DIY Base Tray: I created a simple DIY round base tray I made a few years ago using a round tray to anchor everything. This gives the centerpiece structure and makes it look intentional (even though I literally just grabbed what I had!). You can use any tray or anchor you’d like.
DIY Apothecary Jars from Dollar Tree: This is where the magic happens! I made these tiered apothecary jars using Dollar Tree supplies. If you’ve never made these before, they’re basically glass jars stacked on candlesticks to create that fancy apothecary jar look for a fraction of the cost. It’s one of my favorite Dollar Tree hacks!
The Candy Filling: I filled the jars with Valentine candy that coordinates beautifully:
- Milk chocolate Dove hearts & Dark chocolate Dove hearts
- Valentine M&M’s in pink and red
- Valentine Hershey Hugs
The mix of colors—deep reds, bright pinks, and those shiny foil wrappers—creates such a pretty visual effect through the glass.
You really can use any candy in the jars. I just recommend keep your colors coordinated for a cohesive look.
Full disclosure: the Hugs in the jar are actually peppermint Hugs from Christmas! The red worked for Valentine’s Day, and I just couldn’t keep buying more chocolate when we already still had so much in the house!
So, point being – use whatever chocolate or candy work!
Bottom Embellishments: Here’s where I got creative with what I already had:
- Plastic Valentine kids’ necklaces (you know, the beaded ones from the party favor aisle?) repurposed and draped over the bottom of the jars (I had saved them years ago when my kids came home with them. I knew I’d need them someday!)
- Glittery Styrofoam hearts scattered around the base
- The combination adds texture and that Valentine sparkle without looking too juvenile
Why This Centerpiece Works
First of all, it’s functional! The candy isn’t just for show—people can actually grab pieces throughout your Valentine gathering or meal. There’s something really welcoming about having treats on the table that guests can enjoy.
Second, the height variation from the tiered jars creates visual interest without blocking conversation across the table. Nobody wants a centerpiece so tall you can’t see the person sitting across from you, right?
And third (and maybe most importantly for me), it’s easy to change out seasonally. Once Valentine’s Day is over, I can swap the candy and decorations for spring colors, Easter, or whatever holiday is coming next. The jars themselves are neutral and versatile.
Creating the Simple Valentine Tablescape
Now, the centerpiece is gorgeous on its own – and for everyday functioning, it’s enough. But a complete tablescape makes the whole table feel special. The best part? This tablescape is SO simple to recreate.
The Foundation: Linens and Greenery
I started with a white linen tablecloth as my base. Linen always feels elegant and effortless at the same time, and the neutral color lets all the Valentine touches really pop.
Then I added eucalyptus garlands down the center of the table, underneath the tray. Can we just appreciate how eucalyptus makes everything look so stylish? I love how the soft green tones balance out all the pink and red Valentine colors. It keeps things from feeling too overwhelmingly Valentine-y (if that’s even a thing).
Don’t overthink the garland placement—let it look natural and a bit wild. I like to weave it loosely so it has movement and feels dynamic.
The Place Settings: Mix and Match Perfection
This is where I had the most fun! Instead of trying to make everything match perfectly, I embraced a collected, casual look:
Jute Placemats: These natural woven placemats add warmth and texture to each place setting. They’re budget-friendly, and I use them for multiple seasons throughout the year.
White Disposable Plastic Plates: Yes, disposable! I found these scalloped-edge white plates that look surprisingly elegant. For a casual Valentine’s Day brunch or family dinner, disposable plates mean less cleanup and more time enjoying the day. No judgment here!
Ceramic Heart Plates: Layered on top of the white plates, these sweet heart-shaped plates are the perfect Valentine touch. They come in that pretty cream color with embossed details that catch the light. You can also use pretty paper Valentine plates – I just happen to have these on hand.
Heart Mugs: These area set of heart mugs with “Love” printed on them, with tiny hearts all over. If I didn’t have these, I would definitely be setting out a variety of Valentine-themed mugs to make it feel more personal and less “matchy-matchy.”
Heart Mini Bowls in Different Colors: For a pop of color, I added small heart-shaped bowls in shades of pink, coral, and red. These are perfect at each place setting – for soup, or maybe for yogurt if you’re serving brunch, or for a dessert. You could also fill them with other treats and spread them along the eucalyptus garland as part of the tablescape.
I love nothing matches exactly, but it all works together. The white plates and cream heart plates create a neutral base, while the colored bowls and mugs add personality.
The eucalyptus brings in organic texture, and the centerpiece ties it all together with coordinating colors.
To me, it feels curated but without being fussy.
Seriously, the whole setup took me maybe 20 minutes. And, done!
Valentine Tablescape Ideas: Making It Your Own
The beauty of this simple tablescape is how easily you can adapt it to your own style:
For a More Elegant Look:
- Use real china instead of disposable plates
- Add linen napkins
- Add taper candles, pillar candles or votives down the length of the table
- Skip the kids’ necklaces and use ribbon or lace instead
For a Fun Family Dinner:
- Add Valentine printables or kids’ crafts at each place setting
- Include conversation heart candies scattered on the table
- Use colorful Valentine paper products, like napkins, plates, and cups
- Lay down Kraft paper and let kids draw
For a Galentine’s Brunch:
- Add champagne flutes filled with a pink bubbly drink
- Include small bouquets or Galentine’s favors at each setting
- Use rose gold accents
- Add a fun “Love” banner or “XOXO” paper table runner
Budget-Friendly Swaps:
- Use a white sheet instead of a linen tablecloth (paper or vinyl Valentine’s Day tablecloths work great, too!)
- Use mason jars if you haven’t made the apothecary jars yet
- Mix in solid color plates you already own
Why I Love This Valentine Table Setting
There’s something really special about taking the time to make your everyday dining space feel festive. It doesn’t have to be for a party or a fancy dinner—sometimes you just want something a little special on a regular weeknight.
Plus, with Valentine’s Day falling on a random weekday most years, having a tablescape that’s pretty but practical (hello, disposable plates!) means you can actually enjoy it without stressing about the cleanup afterward.
Tips for Styling Your Valentine Centerpiece
A few lessons I’ve learned from creating Valentine centerpieces over the years:
Keep it touchable: I love that guests can grab candy from the jars. It makes the centerpiece interactive and not just decorative.
Vary your heights: The tiered apothecary jars create different levels, which is more interesting visually than everything being the same height.
Don’t be afraid to mix metals and materials: Glass jars, wood beads, plastic necklaces, glittery hearts—they all work together because the color palette is cohesive.
Less can be more: You don’t need a million decorations. Sometimes a simple eucalyptus garland and a good centerpiece are all you need.
Use what you have: Before buying new stuff, shop your house! I guarantee you have items that can work for Valentine’s Day if you look at them with fresh eyes.
Making Memories at Your Valentine Table
At the end of the day, this whole tablescape thing isn’t really about the decorations or the centerpiece or the candy. It’s about creating a home where you can gather with the people you love and invite others in to feel and know the love of God.
A pretty table just sets the stage and is a pretty backdrop for real life to happen.
And if you can do that with Dollar Tree jars, some eucalyptus, and a few heart-shaped plates? Even better.
