If you’ve ever dreamed of having rustic decor in your home, I’m sure your thoughts have wandered to the bedroom. Today I want to share not only rustic bedding sets but also some basics of rustic home decor that you can incorporate into your master bedroom and your entire home! Perfect selections for 2022!
Rustic Bedding Sets: One Piece of a Bigger Picture
My guess is that you came here for rustic bedding ideas and inspiration, right? No worries – I’ve got you covered!
But before we scroll to the bottom for all the pictures and links, I want to throw a few things out there to consider as you’re choosing your bedding.
While I don’t think an entire house needs to be the exact same style, ideally there is a cohesive feel to a home. A bedroom is a little bit of an outlier since it’s primarily an individual space and not one where many people visit. So, your bedroom certainly can stand on its own, as far as style is concerned.
However, if you’re choosing a rustic bedding set, you want it to fit into the rest of the room as a whole. The entire bedroom doesn’t need to ‘just rustic,’ but the bedding should work with the flow and feel of the entire room, which will likely include a few other rustic elements.
If you’re new to rustic decor or really want to get a handle on how to master this look in your bedroom or in your home, I’ll go over some of that first before we get to the bedding.
Fair enough? Let’s get started!
What Exactly is Rustic Decor?
If you’re not overly familiar with the basics of rustic style, this post here goes into great detail, where I discuss how to create a rustic style mantel. But to summarize, rustic decor includes:
Natural Materials
You’ll find all kinds of natural elements in rustic decor. Woods, metals (perfect if you lean toward industrial), stone, and brick all align smoothly with rustic decor. Nature itself is also included, whether faux or real. Think about flowers, baby’s breath, eucalyptus, pine, dried oranges, cinnamon, as they are seasonally relevant.
Neutral Tones
Rustic is not known for its bright base colors. Typically, it’s a blended mixture of wood and white, creams, greys, and tans. Your accent decor pieces are where you might add color, especially seasonally. And that is exactly why a neutral background is so key: so your seasonal decor can be front and center.
Natural Flaws and Imperfections
Rustic decor does not emphasize clean and neat lines. It absorbs all of the organic flaws, imperfections, and quirks – rough edges, chippy paint, unfinished surfaces, timeworn pieces.
Reclaimed wood and barn wood is perfect for rustic decor as well – and shiplap is also a cost-effective alternative.
Vintage and Antique Pieces
Rustic decor is more of choosing complimentary and coordinated styles, not having a matchy-matchy look. It curates all kinds of furniture that aren’t part of a store-bought set but work together.
In rustic decor, you’re free to mix-and-match colors and patterns in the same family, as well as include unique vintage pieces and antiques. Mismatched end tables or accent chairs add to the charm.
To avoid looking like a hoarder, you want each room to be cohesive, but your end goal is not necessarily that modern, store-bought feel.
You can even make some of your own furniture using wood pallets.
Meaningful and Functional Accents
There’s an element of nostalgia to rustic decor – both personal and historic – so go ahead and mix in some of your personal items that have special significance to you – family photos, framed letters, handmade pieces, passed-down heirlooms.
Anyone’s house can look like Hobby Lobby. There’s nothing wrong with mixing in Hobby Lobby finds, but include items that are unique, functional (even if it just serves an emotional purpose), and meaningful, not just a random clutter.
Two Kinds of Rustic Style Bedrooms
When you’re thinking of a rustic bedroom (and rustic bedding that will go into it), there are two different ways you can go: a rustic cabin look or a modern rustic style. Let me break down each of them.
This is a very strong stereotype and generality, but if you think of rustic cabin style as leaning more masculine and modern rustic style as leaning more feminine, you’ll have a pretty idea of the spectrum.
Rustic Cabin Style
A rustic cabin will look like one of those luxury rustic cabins in the mountains that you vacation at: wood paneling, wood ceiling beams, an outdoorsman’s dream.
You might see this rustic look with black bears or an antler chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Other accents might include different wildlife such as deer, fish, and moose, as well as woodsy elements from nature such as pine trees and pine cones. Furniture also has the wood-hewn look such as log beds, rocking chairs, tables, and even sofas.
For cabin bedding, you might see find a quilt set on the bed, decorative pillows that are a rare flea market find, or maybe a dark, moody comforter set in a pattern or solid color. Your side table might even be made from a tree stump.
All of these elements contribute to a cozy cabin vibe.
Modern Rustic Style
For a more modern approach, you’ll find a rustic style that heavily leans toward modern farmhouse. You might find wooden walls in this decor, but maybe it’s just wooden beams with ceiling fans instead. Or maybe you’d mix wood ceiling beams with white paneled walls.
It wouldn’t be unusual to see stone used as well- stone walls or fireplaces, possibly even an accent wall. Instead of a log bed frames, you’ll find a rustic headboard or metal bed frames.
Other modern elements might include updated light fixtures, wood furniture that emphasizes the beauty of natural wood – bedside tables and dressers, shelving and molding in raw wood.
The feel of a modern rustic style is light and airy – a large window, high ceilings, wicker baskets, throw pillows or pillow shams in white coloring or a neutral color palette.
And don’t forget: shiplap and barn doors. White-washed peel and stick planking is another fantastic at alternative for creating a modern rustic vibe.
These might all be things you’d see in a master bedroom that’s decorated in a modern rustic theme.
Things to Consider When Choosing Rustic Bedding
Here are a few different things to consider when you’re choosing rustic bedding. Your bedding is just one piece of your bedroom decor, and you’ll want to think about how it fits in with the rest of the bedroom as a whole.
Color:
You can stick with a more neutral color scheme and add in pops of color in accent pillows, throw blankets, etc. Your choice of color will also depend on if you go with a rustic cabin style or modern rustic. Rustic cabin tends to have deeper, rich colors than modern rustic.
Patterns:
While most of your room may be calming, bedding is the perfect place to add in some plaids, buffalo check, geometric patterns, quilt designs, stripes, or even florals and paisleys.
Statement Piece (or Not):
Decide if you want your bedding to be the focal point, or if it’s more of the ‘background music’ to some other decorative element, such as a wall hanging, framed pictures, gallery wall, accent wall, fireplace mantel, etc.
Use of Contrast:
Decide if you want your room to have a monochromatic feel or if want it to provide contrast. For example, if your walls are white, do you want your bedding to blend or provide contrast? If you have dark furniture or walls, do you want a moody vibe with your bedding or something that’s on the lighter side?
Fabric Choices:
Fabrics in rustic styles are usually natural, cotton fibers, linens, chunky yarns, etc. Consider the temperature of your room when choosing your bedding.
Does the room tend to be chilly and drafty? Is it warm? Do you want to bedding that’s appropriate for each season, both decoratively and functionally? Do you want cozy and fleece warm blankets, layered throws or more breathable cottons and linens?
Whatever your choices, you want your bedroom to feel cozy, relaxing, calming. It should feel like home.
