Springtime Creativity with a Most Special Generation

There’s something very, very special about making crafts with seniors. Maybe even more so in the spring. As the days get brighter and longer and everything outside starts to come alive again, creating something with your hands seems especially appropriate and life-giving.

My nana always had a craft project going. Even well into her later years, she loved creating with her hands.

My nana crafted for as long as I can remember – way before it was the ‘trendy’ thing to do. She stayed connected with friends in her condo community, which kept her mind and spirit young, well into her 90s.

Spring can be such a welcome change for seniors after a long winter.  Spring craft ideas for seniors offer something cheerful to look forward to. If you’re planning activities for assisted living, nursing homes, or a senior center, crafting is a perfect way to encourage conversation, laughter, and memories.

A lot of times, these times together lead to storytelling—about family, life experiences, and wisdom that deserves to be heard. That’s really what makes crafts with seniors so special. It’s not about the finished project –  it’s the connection.

If you volunteer, work with senior adults, or just enjoy spending time crafting with an older loved one, easy crafts for senior citizens are perfect way to kick off spring and bring it indoors.

They also work beautifully as multigenerational activities! Many projects are kid-friendly, making them perfect for the younger ones or grandchildren.

It can feel a little intimidating when it comes to planning crafts for seniors. You want it to be accessible for them, but you don’t want it to feel too childish.

We’ve taken our homeschool group to a local assisted living home to do crafts with the seniors, and here are a few things that have helped us.

1| Choose simple projects

Look for simple crafts for seniors with minimal steps. Easy assembly keeps the focus on fun. A lot of times, kid crafts work perfectly! And sometimes, it does help if you do any prepping materials or cutting ahead of time to make it a little easier.

We’ve found that foam sticker kits from Amazon or Oriental Trading often work really well, too!

2| Use senior-friendly materials

Foam stickers, large brushes, felt pieces, ribbon, chunky embellishments, and pre-cut shapes make DIY crafts for seniors accessible and enjoyable. Dexterity can be an issue, so keep that in mind when choosing crafts.

3| Keep safety in mind

Soft, familiar supplies work best. Avoid sharp tools and opt for paper, yarn, pom-poms, and lightweight materials.

4| Plan with timing in mind

Some quick crafts for adults are ideal for shorter sessions, while others may need drying time. Planning ahead helps everything run smoothly.

5| Have fun!

Every senior has different abilities. Be flexible & simplify steps when needed. Their favorite part will probably just be spending time with you anyway – so enjoy it, no matter what!

Now let’s take a look at some spring arts and crafts for seniors that will be perfect for an afternoon with the greatest generation.
