No Problem with Christmas Decorating in November
This year, I did what I’ve never done before: I started decorating for Christmas in November. Not, late-November-close-to-Thanksgiving-ish November. Like, early November.
It started when one of my sons had a fever and we couldn’t go to the aquarium like we had planned. It was Veteran’s Day weekend, and as a consolation prize, I pulled out the Christmas decorations.
I have to say, as we are approaching Thanksgiving – this whole decorating early thing? I am sold. I LOVE having my house all set for Christmas by Thanksgiving, instead of pulling everything out when we are trying to rouse ourselves from the Thanksgiving turkey coma.
All the World Sees a Christmas Porch
In 2018, we had just moved into our home the 2nd weekend in December, so as we were unpacking boxes, I was throwing up some Christmas decorations in every direction to camouflage the disarray. The next year, I wanted to be a little more thoughtful about it.
Porches are one of my favorite areas to decorate because:
A. We don’t get a lot of visitors during the season, so while I love the decor inside, it’s only a few of us who get to enjoy it. Porches at least feel a little bit worth the effort.
B. There’s enough space in a porch area to create a whole vignette, and I love the unity of that look.
This was my very first Christmas porch, circa 2019. This was as far as I got on my porch, but it was my first time having a porch to decorate, so I was kinda in love.
Over the years, it’s progressed and changed a little more (you’ll see them in the roundup!), and it’s still a favorite area to decorate!
Instagram: The Go-To for Beautifully Curated Decor
Today I want to share some legitimate farmhouse Christmas porch eye candy to inspire you from the some of the very tip-top: Instagrammers. Instagram is known for its unbelievable gorgeous and curated photos.
And there are some on Instagram who truly have hit their sweet spot when it comes to farmhouse decor, in particular – Christmas and Christmas porches. I mean, breathtaking.
These kind Instagrammers share their beautiful photos to offer the world inspiration for our own porches and homes. I’m always screenshotting and mentally collecting ideas, and I hope you’ll find the look that you’ve been searching for.
There are so many ways to do a farmhouse Christmas porch, and I’m sure you’ll find just want you’re looking for.
The pictures I’m sharing are really just the tip of the iceberg. I encourage you to go look at and follow their accounts (and leave them some comments!)
Usually, they’ve shared pictures of the rest of the porch that can’t fit into one picture as well as the rest of their houses. You’ll find inspiration for DAYS. Weeks, even, I bet.
Pro-Tips for Decorating Christmas Porches
So when it comes to decorating the porch, you can narrow it down to a few tips to really help you make the most of your space. Below I’ll outline some of those.
1| Find Your Style
There are so many directions you can go in, when it comes to farmhouse decor. Are you more rustic? Modern farmhouse? Traditional? Minimalist? Do you want a snowy winter wonderland? A lush green Christmas tree farm? Lots of ornaments? More natural decor?
See if you can identify the particular style of farmhouse you’re going for.
What about your color scheme? Are you more into neutrals? Bright reds and greens? Natural greens and snowy whites? Buffalo check? Black and white? Icy whites and red berries?
(PSA: If you like the minimalist/Scandinavian-type style for Christmas, here are 40 ideas and DIYs to inspire you!)
As you look through the pictures, pay attention to the styles and colors that really appeal to you, and use that as a base to build on.
2| Add Some Height
When you’re filling a porch, think about the blank space and how to use it. Height is a great way to decorate, even if you are more of a minimalist.
You can use a chair or a table as well as crates to lift some of the decor. A tall tree in the corner adds height as does a tall farmhouse sign. Stringing lights, buntings as well as a garland around the door are all ways to create height.
You can also add a sign to the wall to pull some vertical lift.
3| Use Those Layers
Layers are a great way to add depth. Put a buffalo check rug under your welcome mat. Prop a signboard in front of your Christmas greens. Strategically placed decor can add dimension to your porch, even if it’s small.
You can layer up and layer out as well.
4| Natural Elements for Cheap Decor
Christmas is a great time to use what you can find in nature (and for free).
A lantern or a hurricane vase filled with pine cones looks amazing. Some cypress, junipers, or pine clippings can be used in planters and crates. Branches and logs in a galvanized bucket also look super-wintery and cozy!
And of course, any kind of Christmas tree is perfect.
5| Cozy Props
If your porch is set up for it, a few carefully placed pillows, throw blankets – even scarves, hats and mittens – can be included in Christmas decor. All of those fabric-types props add a hominess and coziness to your porch display.
6| Nostalgic Props
Farmhouse Christmas porch decor is all about nostalgia, and vintage props work perfectly for that.
You can use galvanized pails and buckets, vintage ice skates, skis, sleds, a snow shovel…all of those props bring back an old-fashioned feeling for Christmas.
Chippy and a little bit weather-worn looks amazing in this decor. Farmhouse signs fit right in this category, too. There’s something about a nostalgic Christmas that brings out all the feels for Christmas.
7| When in Doubt, Copy the Picture
If you aren’t sure where you want to go with your decorating, find a picture you love and do your best to replicate it. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?
I’m sure those Instagrammers and others will be touched that you tried your hand at their creative vignettes. Be sure to tag them if you do!
We might not get it perfect, but I’m sure it will surpass your expectations!

Katelyn @farmcharmhomestead
I love the use of just a few colors in this one! A simple black, white, and green color palette is such a striking look. The choice of decor totally ties in and compliments the black door, with the buffalo check and burlap tying it all together.
Heather @saltgrassdecor
I love the winter-woods feel of this porch! The flocked trees along with the flocked wreaths create the perfect snowy effect. When you add in those winter greens and birch poles, it feels like you stepped into a winter wonderland. This also can easily transition from Christmas to winter decor afterward.

I love the peaceful feeling of this set-up. With a few well-chosen nostalgic pieces like a snow shovel, a checked pillow, and a thermos arranged with some trees in vintage pails...the overall feeling is so warm and inviting.
Sarah @homewithjoanie
This is another one where 'less is more,' and I just love the simple, clean feeling of this porch. A few wreaths, a tall rustic sign, and a layered welcome mat just the right amount of decor for a perfect farmhouse porch.

I love the mix of simplicity and detail on this porch. The greens of the wreath and trees, the logs and wooden baskets, the black and white in the rug and lanterns. It ties in perfectly. And those stars, boots, and bells on the door are the spectacular finishing touches. Perfectly executed.

How dreamy is this?!? Whimsical is definitely the word! Those lighted trees and garland - lights make everything magical. Such an easy way to add the winter wonderland feeling!
Anders Ruff Workshop @andersruffworkshop
Here's another black and white color palette that I love! The white of the birch logs, trees, and ice skates work perfectly with the greys and buffalo check. Adore this display! And you can make some of these projects at their workshops! Be sure to check them out for a location near you!

Heather @beautyforasheshome
Just love the nostalgic feel of this one. The oversized JOY sign and the old-fashioned sled give it some height, and the blanket and pillow add just the right amount of coziness. And that cypress garland adds a striking, luxuriant effect.
@1866revival
If vintage is how you'd describe your style, this is one to model! Don't miss all those details hidden among the Christmas greens - the ice skates, the birdcage, even the Coca Cola box! Don't limit yourself to what to include in a Christmas porch vignette!
@ourquaintcolonial
This porch gives you all the old-fashioned feels! The Radio Flyer wagon, the ice skates and sled, the picnic basket and thermos, the red truck doormat - this is as nostalgic as it gets! Definitely makes you want to be home for Christmas!
@MyAlbertaFarmhouse
This is a perfect example of how to style up a Christmas porch if you only have a small area. Using one chair to layer and stack items as a central focal point is a fantastic way to make the most of your space! The rug anchors the vignette, and this display shows that you don't need a lot of room for a striking effect!
Daune @cottageintheoaks
Isn't this one just beautiful? A few strong pieces like a Christmas tree and skis mixing in with some lanterns, logs, and a simple green wreath goes miles for rustic Christmas decor. And that 'Merry Christmas' sign above the door is the cherry on top.
Tina & Taylor @velveteenandgracega
This porch is total vintage charm! The details here are spectacular - the sled, the ice skates, the flocked trees... that red striped ribbon? That basket on the door? Just lovely.
@easywifehappylife
If you like bright colors and sparkle, this one is for you! Tied together with striped ribbons and bright colored ornaments, this one has a fanciful, whimsical Christmas feel!
Kate @100affections
This is my porch in 2019. I was going with a rustic, outdoor feel by using wood slices and a wood stump table, along with a reclaimed wood sign and a ladder to add some height. The flocked greens mixed with the pine cones finished the outdoorsy, wintery Christmas look I was going for.
2020 Rustic Glam Christmas Porch
This is how I progressed in 2020. That was the pandemic year, but it didn't stop me from going all out for my porch. We made a lot of changes - paint the walls white, adding a rug, painting the door. I went with a strong tree theme, and I'm not sorry about it. 😉
Neutral Rustic Christmas Porch (2021)
Here you can see that we painted the door black, and it's a bit heavier in a black and white theme. While the year before had minimal red, in 2021, I went with zero red. I added in a little more neutral tones (pampas grass), and it was a very simple change-over to winter.
Cozy Rustic Porch
This is my 2022 version! I wanted a tree that highlighted the true meaning of Christmas - these names of Jesus ornaments were just what it needed. I also added clip-on candle lights for an extra cozy, nostalgic feel!
from Liz Marie Blog
If you happen to live in an area that gets quite a bit snow, it can definitely be added to your Christmas porch decor! I love the idea of leaving some wintery trees and logs buckets on the steps and letting the snow add some free Christmas touches!
Hip & Humble Style
I always love how Deb styles her home, and her Christmas porch is no exception! The lush greens are what takes her porch over the top, and when you go to her site, you so so many other creative elements!
from Citrine Living
If you love you some classic red with more of a stately, traditional vibe, this one is simple in design but so classy and elegant. You don't need much more than lights, greens, and red ribbon!
from Making It in the Mountains
This whole porch is gorgeous (click over to check it out), but what I truly love is the pile of chopped wood! It's so functional, normal, but looks just amazing for a Christmas porch!
from White Arrows Home
This is such a great example of using the available space on a smaller porch and filling the height! Those tall birch branches and skis are just perfect for using what real estate is available and still creating a stunning porch!
House of Hawthornes Lodge Theme
If you like to add the vintage elements to your porch, this is a great one to take a peak at! Notice the snow shoes on the wall, the vintage Christmas tree base, the plaid metal container...all wonderful pieces for a touch of nostalgia.
from Postcards from the Ridge
Here's another porch that works great if you have a small space! These vintage touches including the sled, Radio Flyer wagon, plaid scarf load up fill the space perfectly without sacrificing any of the festive decor.
from Simply 2 Moms
Dramatic black and red decor and accessories go a long way for Christmas decorating! It's bold, festive - and I love that it's something that can be easily seen from a distance. You don't need a lot - just the right pieces!
from Design Dazzle
Here's another wonderful porch that uses dramatic and bold black and whites! If you lean more neutral and like the black and white with some green thrown in, this is the perfect inspiration. And don't miss those snowflakes!
from Atta Girl Says
So much vintage inspiration here! If you have space to all in all the vintage things, this post will give you so many ideas!
from Start at Home Decor
This lovely porch has so many ideas for budget-friendly decorating... pillows, greenery, wrapped gifts, ornaments... lots of creative ways to create a stunning effect!
from The Honeycomb Home
A sweet display like this is another idea if you love more natural Christmas decor and you're working with a smaller space. Bigger isn't always better!
from Small Stuff Counts
I love the unity and how the white ribbon (literally) ties the whole porch together! Something as simple as ribbon can bring your whole porch theme together - and the white ribbon is simple, charming, and a wonderful contrast to the green.
from Confessions of an Overworked Mom
This porch has a few simple elements, but it's just enough for a festive display. I love putting small decorated Christmas trees on the porch. And you can never go wrong with a traditional Christmas pointsetta.
from Living on Cloud Nine
This is spectacular inspiration if you love black and white buffalo check! The pillows, the ribbons, the ornaments, paired with a bright red - the effect is stunning!
from Rain and Pine
This is a gorgeous crisp and clean Christmas porch - dramatic black and white with classy signs. Add in some small trees, and this one is just lovely.
