If you’re looking for cheap, easy ways to decorate for Valentine’s Day – ideas that are elegant and classy, full of rustic, romantic charm, keep reading! I’ll show you how I combined neutral Valentine’s Day decor with subtle spring touches for a vintage yet modern, fresh look!
Valentine’s Day Decor: Classy, Not Cutesy. Too Much to Ask For?
Last year, when it came to Valentine’s Day decorating, I made a challenge with myself to see if I could come up with inexpensive ideas, mostly from Dollar Tree materials. I feel like I was really successful at that (you can see my 8 DIY project here) – both in the way of creativity and staying within a small budget.
This year, however, I just wasn’t digging a lot of the Valentine’s decor I made last year. It wasn’t that I didn’t like it – it was just that it had a little more boldness than I wanted for this year.
Last year, I had a lot of red and bright pinks, mixed with black and white. This year, I wanted to go with a more neutral, rustic Valentine’s Day look – something a little softer, more romantic, with a vintage flair. Something that was farmhouse style but more classy and less cutesy. Is that asking too much?
Valentine’s Day Decorations with an Elegant Spring Theme
Originally, I thought I was going to blend in some of my winter decor – the snowy, winter whites offset by white and neutral Valentine’s Day decorations…mixed in with some greys and tans. Maybe keep in some of the winter greens for color.
But as I put that together, it was just looking a little too bland for me. Maybe a little boring?
I knew I didn’t really want red. Not necessarily a lot of pink. I didn’t think I could avoid hearts altogether but again, I wanted it to be elegant and tasteful, not sugary-sweet. But I just wasn’t sure how I could pull all this together.
As I thought about it some more, I realized that hearts aren’t the only main theme in Valentine’s Day decor; flowers are as well. And well, flowers are a lead-in to spring, especially ‘pink’ flowers, right? So, it hit me that instead of rolling Valentine’s Day back with winter decor, couldn’t I roll it forward with spring decor?
And that’s exactly what I did. It gave me the lightness, the subtle pops of color without being too overwhelming or cutesy.

Today, I want to share how I put together my Valentine’s Day decorations for an elegant look – one that leans toward a classic, vintage, romantic vibe. There are also a lot of versatile pieces that blend perfectly with rustic farmhouse, modern farmhouse, and boho decor, so you can pull these ideas in many different directions.
I also incorporated many of the budget-friendly tips and hacks for Valentine’s Day decorating that I discuss in detail here!
I’ll also throw in a few DIYs that I explain real simply.
Let me give you a tour of my home for Valentine’s Day, which is a super-easy transition to spring, once it’s over. And if you know me, I’m a lazy decorator, so the easier the switchover, the better!
Entryway and Shelving
This isn’t an entry way exactly, but when you open the front door, this is what you see.
I’ll walk you back to see it all up close.
This rustic bench I purchased from Big Lots… not real wood, but it’s a pretty darn good imitation. The pitcher was a 40% off spring item from Hobby Lobby, and the flowers were from Wish.com. The coffee table basket is a DIY project made from jute rope.
The little pots are just Dollar Tree terra cotta pots. I took an old flour sack towel with writing on it (you can use any fabric) and glued it on to the pot. You glue the fabric on the inside, and then just stretch, pull, and glue until it covers the pot. Be sure not leave too much excess fabric on the bottom so it will sit straight. Then, tie some raffia around it.
Raffia is in my home decor. It’s a must-have if you like rustic, vintage-looking decor, and you can get it at Dollar Tree.
Moving past the bench is the mirror.
For the mirror, I just hung some mini grapevine hearts – in the wedding section of Hobby Lobby for half off – and tied them up on some ribbon. Next year, I’m thinking I may add some beads in between.
Now over to the floating shelves.
The pieces on the bottom shelf are staples. I just change out the stems and the print. The top shelf is a sign I got from Hobby Lobby on clearance after Valentine’s Day one year. The vase is a SUPER-CHEAP and SUPER-EASY DIY. I saw another blogger years ago (sorry – don’t remember who!) who wrapped scrapbook paper or contact paper around an oatmeal container to use as a vase.
An oatmeal container was too big for what I needed, so I got a $1 vase from Dollar Tree and scotch-tape contact paper to it. Yes, scotch tape. We aren’t fancy around here. Then, I just tied some raffia around it. And…. done.
Shelf/Mantel and Entertainment Center
So this isn’t a true mantel, but I decorate it like one.
The big bottle on the left is just an apple cider jar from Kroger. The other bottles were from a TJ Maxx set.
That big wooden frame is one of my favorite pieces and I can’t remember for the life of me where I got it . Pretty sure it was a yard sale ages ago.
To decorate frame, I put scrapbook paper (same paper as the vase) in the frame area. Then, I took an old heart beaded garland from Hobby Lobby, cut off the heart and a few beads and painted them gray. Then, I used masking tape to hang the beads from the inside area of the frame (be sure to remove the glass or plastic) and put the backing back on.
The little blue sign with the heart is from Big Lots. I was wanting a little more blue than grey, but it picks up on the blue in the sign next to it, so I’m good with it!
The “Love Never Fails” is a printable from my Etsy shop. I wanted a timeless message about love (what’s more timeless than the Bible, right?) along with a design I could keep up past Valentine’s Day. It comes in 6 sizes – this is the 8×8″ square.
The pallet heart is from Dollar Tree that I painted the same color grey and white. I did need to fill the holes with nail filler and sand it before painting, as it was originally meant to hang.
The candlestick are from Hobby Lobby (half off), which were originally black. They were too dark for this set up so I spray-painted them with Rustoleum Aged Brass.
I’m typically not a huge fan of heart decor, but I felt these were neutral and subtle enough to not look too sugary.
Below the shelf is the TV Entertainment Center.
Below, in the entertainment cabinet are stamped books I made (spray chalk paint on hard cover books, then stamped). The flowers, in keeping with a neutral theme, are from the wedding section of Hobby Lobby and attached with a glue gun.
Next to the books is a basket filled with mini vintage pillows.
For this super easy DIY project, I took 2 yard pre-cut Waverly Cotton Duck fabric from Walmart in this design (any fabric will do) plus some fabric I already had. I measured out some small squares (ended up being rectangles, really, lol), made small cuts at the right measurements, and then I tore it the rest of the way to get a frayed edge. After that, I glue-gunned 3 sides, stuffed with pillow stuffing, and then sealed up.
They are super-cute for a vintage, romantic rustic look and they are great basket fillers!
Hookboard
This little area is between the entertainment center and a cube cabinet. The book paper wreath is one I made last year during my Dollar Tree Challenge, and I kept it around this year because I love the rustic feel it brings to Valentine’s Day decor.
Cube Cabinet
The top of this shelf is really my favorite part of the whole thing here.
I really love how simple and minimalist this area looks. Those candlesticks were purchased at the Target Dollar Spot – originally yellow but chalk-painted white and distressed.
Those wooden ‘vases’ on top of them are really pencil holders from Dollar Tree – perfect for a rustic flower holder. The faux flowers are some of my favorites and those were from Walmart, along with some eucalyptus greens.
In the frame is a Valentine’s Day gift bag, and the bottles with the greens are repurposed maple syrup bottles!
The small candles with that cute black and white checked pattern are from Dollar Tree, too!
Below in the cubes are various signs and prints (most available in my Etsy shop!). You can see that it’s pretty subtle as far as color goes – some pink but not overwhelming.
The pale blush roses are from Dollar Tree. The riser was a DIY I made. The XO votives are from Dollar Tree also.
The lantern is filled with the same white and pale blush roses from Dollar Tree.
Rustic Mantel for Valentine’s Day
This mantel is new, so I’ve been so excited to decorate it for every holiday so far.
I think a mantel needs a statement piece, and I really wanted one that wasn’t too busy (the bricks add a little more activity than I really want). I also wanted one that would demonstrate the true meaning of love. Of course, I can never find what I want (or I’m too cheap to pay for it), so I designed this printable “We love because He first loved us” (which is in my Etsy shop), and I’m so happy with it.
I had it printed as a blueprint in a 24×36″ poster size at Staples for $4, and the frame was $9 at Walmart. Total win!
The beaded garland was from Hobby Lobby (at some point – I’m always grabbing it when I see it). The eucalyptus garland was a half-off purchase from the wedding section at Hobby Lobby.
You can see another one of those DIY vases – the same as the living room. The peonies were in a bunch from Hobby Lobby for half-off.
The buffalo check heart was a project I made last year from my Dollar Tree challenge for Valentine’s Day.
The Shakespeare Sonnet 116 is a printable from my shop, in a $4 Walmart frame. The candlesticks were from Hobby Lobby – the same ones I painted brass.
On the bottom of the fire place, I have more of the same bottles I used in the living room, with the same rosebuds (the jars originally came in a 6 piece set in a chicken wire carrier from TJ Maxx). The apothecary labels were free printables from Bless’er House.
The rope basket was a Dollar Tree DIY made from one of their plastic buckets, a mop head, and some fabric glued inside.
The pampas grass was free from nature, in another Kroger apple cider jar.
